RESEARCH EXPERIENCE HUNTER COLLEGE, CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK Principal Investigator for the Family Violence Research Project 08/14-Present National Center for Child Welfare Excellence Through qualitative and quantitative analysis of child welfare case records and administrative data, this project examines one urban public child welfare agency s response to allegations of child exposure to domestic violence. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, this project examines how child welfare workers construe child exposure to domestic violence as harmful to children and how these constructions influence child welfare service decisions. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Consultant for the Child Welfare Case Review Project 08/14-Present Mack Center on Nonprofit & Public Sector Management in the Human Services Principal Investigator: Michael J. Austin, School of Social Welfare Providing ongoing technical support and analysis to qualitative data-mining project that examines child welfare in practice. Dissertation Research 05/13-08/14 School of Social Welfare Mixed-Method study that used clinical data-mining techniques to examine how child welfare agencies responded to child exposure to domestic violence. Responsible for study design, IRB approval, data collection, management, and analysis. Recruited, trained, and supervised one MSW student and five undergraduate students to assist with codebook development, data collection, cleaning, and analysis. Provided ongoing training in use of mix-methods analytic software and team-based coding. Planed and co-facilitated research meetings with Project Director. Coordinated onsite data extraction/clinical data-mining plan and follow-up with local child welfare agency. Graduate Student Researcher for the California Child Welfare Indicators Project 08/11-07/13 Center for Social Services Research 03/04-05/05 Principal Investigator: Barbara Needell, School of Social Welfare Performed quality control checks on quarterly performance reports and assisted with data presentations and website redesign. Provided training on data access and usage to child welfare administrators and staff. Examined data linkage opportunities between California s Child Welfare Services/Case Management System (CWS/CMS) and Structured Decision Making (SDM) databases. Graduate Student Researcher for the Excellence in Foster Care Project 08/09-12/10 Principal Investigator: Jill Duerr Berrick, School of Social Welfare Qualitative study of best micro-practices among seasoned foster parents. Designed interview schedule. Conducted extensive in-person interviews with foster parents about promising practices with foster youth. Graduate Student Researcher to Crime Victim Assistance Project 09/09-12/09 Principal Investigator: Jonathan Simon, Berkeley Law Research and writing on crime victim assistance in California and Sweden. Carried out preliminary analysis of how local municipalities in California and Sweden use crime victim assistance to respond to victims of domestic violence. Examines indicators of child well-being across rich OECD nations, with a focus on how social policy can enhance the welfare of children, particularly in the United States. Through review of past and present U.S. anti-poverty, family support, and child welfare policies, this course provides students with a practical framework for policy analysis and action. Students develop the skills needed to promote policies that strengthen families and advance social and economic justice. Policy principles gained through this course can be generalized to other populations. Social Welfare Policies and Services I, Instructor Fall 2014 Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, City University of New York Masters-level foundation course. Furnishes students with the orienting knowledge and skills needed to examine social welfare policies and to understand their relevance to social service delivery and social work practice. Drawing on liberal arts knowledge, the course contextualizes social welfare policy and the social work profession, historically, conceptually, and ideologically. Students become familiar with basic issues, concepts, values, terminology, frameworks and ethical issues that define social welfare policy and that influence their ability to work with diverse groups and populations at risk and to think. Provided instruction to graduate students in public policy, public health, and social welfare.
