MULTI-SPORTS academy ACADEMY GUIDE

Introduction At Legacy Sports we believe that children should play as many sports as possible before choosing which one/s they enjoy the most. We also believe that a child needs to become Physically Literate by learning fundamental movement and sport skills before they can truly learn sport-specific skills. When researching sports academies in Qatar we discovered that many families are having to pay multiple fees & travel to many different venues for their children to be able to enjoy sport. Most of the time this involves more than one child, making it extremely difficult and expensive for families to participate in their preferred sports. Taking into consideration our philosophies and the current market offerings we have designed a multi-sports, multiskills program that will enable children to develop their abilities and enjoy sport whist providing parents with a more flexible and economically viable option. Legacy Multi-Sports Academy Outline Our multi-sports academy caters for children aged 4yrs 10yrs and is designed to involve them in many different sports whilst teaching them the basic skills pertinent to healthy growth and development (such as hand-eye co-ordination, balance, gross motor skills, and spatial and body awareness). Children will be placed in age specific groups (4-5 yrs, 6-7 yrs & 8-10 yrs) and can choose to participate in a range of different sports throughout the season. Multi-skills training will be included in all sports sessions and delivered through specifically designed games and tasks. The overall objective of our multi-sports academy is to equip young people with the confidence and skills to help them achieve long term participation in sport. Main Sports Included* FOOTBALL CRICKET TENNIS/BADMINTON T-BALL/SOFTBALL BASKETBALL TOUCH RUGBY *More sports will be added from Jan 2016

Why Multi-Sports? Why Multi-Skills? You can t be a good footballer and average at everything else. Running, jumping, throwing, catching and general skills that you put little thought into all add up when you take to the field. Coordination and balance are vital tools to possess in most sports and these skills should, sometimes unknowingly, be ingrained into us at an early age. Micheal Owen - Footballer You want to be a great cricketer, a great footballer, a great hockey or tennis player you actually have to have the skills of a track and field athlete. You have to be able to run all day, have to be able to sprint, have hand-eye coordination. Sebastian Coe Olympic Athlete

Benefits of a Multi-sports & Multi-skills program 1. Increases long-term participation in sport - Making children aware of the many different physical requirements of playing sports and physical activity may lead them to take responsibility for their own physical development and preparation as they get older. 2. Creates a healthier nation - Different sports need different levels of physical exertion. Using a multi-sports program ensures that pupils practice many different athletic disciplines resulting in a fitter and healthier group of participants. 3. Develops valuable life skills - Problem-solving, communication, team working and working independently are highly valued attributes in sport and life in general. Playing one sport will allow some of these skills to be developed. Multi-sport sessions will increase the likelihood of all participants developing more of these skills. 4. Injury Prevention - Multi-sports sessions can reduce the risk of injuries such as repetitive strains and an imbalance in muscular development 5. Transfer abilities to other sports - Physical skills, decisionmaking ability and other positive attributes can be developed through multi-skills coaching and can be used if, or when, children transfer to another sport. 6. Improves sporting performance Involving multi-skills activities in sports sessions can develop flexibility, core stability, strength, stamina, power and speed and provide all-round physical conditioning 7. Everyone can be involved - By incorporating multi-skills activities into sports sessions coaches can ensure that there is an opportunity for the less-dominant players to achieve success. In particular, many balance and coordination activities don t have external interference such as racing an opponent or being tackled and can allow a youngster time to develop their movement skills. 8. Develops the whole person - Using a multi-skills approach to truly develop multiple skills helps to advance social and lifestyle skills as well as physical and sport specific. Multi-skills coaching develop competence, confidence, connection, creativity, character and caring. A multi-skilled athlete should be a multipleskilled person. The critical, fundamental phase is often overlooked by coaches, teachers and parents, who focus on competition and winning rather than the acquisition of basic skills and fitness Balyi, 2001

Additional benefits of the Legacy Multi-Sports Academy Exposure to a variety of disciplines before choosing preferred sports One fee, multiple sports Flexibility - 3-6 different sports per term Multiple age groups Convenience Options for siblings to join a different sport in the same time slot Many sports at a single venue Coaching sessions Legacy Sports coaches are qualified to instruct in a number of disciplines. We have dedicated Football, Tennis, Basketball, Badminton & Rugby coaches and also Multi- Skills trained instructors. Each academy session will be conducted by a qualified sports coach who will joined by an assistant on larger classes. The maximum ratio of pupils to staff will be 8 : 1 Each session is for a duration of 60 minutes and will be structured as per the diagram Session Breakdown Warm Up - 5 mins Sports Coaching - 35 mins Multi-Skills Tasks - 15 Mins Cool Down - 5 Mins
