Untitled Document 01/06/04 05:42:04 eiki (Universal Life Force) is a holistic energy therapy most commonly facilitated by light touch, which is believed to balance the biofield and strengthen the body's ability to heal itself. This healing has been used primarily by individuals in a daily practice that helps energize, realign, and rebalance energy in the body. Today, however, Reiki is joining other complementary therapies in the conventional settings of hospitals, hospices, counseling centers, emergency rooms, intensive care units. Nurses, physical therapists, surgeons, midwives, anesthetists report that Reiki can help mange pain and promote healing. Counselors and caregivers treating those with illnesses find that Reiki gives patients an increased physical, emotional, and psychological ability to cope. Reiki can be used in a variety of settings to balance energy and create optimum conditions needed for healing and is a non risk and low cost therapy. The following excerpt is from 'A Review of Reiki'ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES, MAR/APR 2003, VOL. 9, NO.2 "There are many hospitals which have programs that incorporate Reiki into the clinical setting. Program administrators, staff and patients report a number of benefits including reduced anxiety and lower use of pain medications, increased patient satisfaction for surgical patients, and decreased numbers of self reported common gerontological complaints such as anxiety, loneliness, insomnia, and pain among older individuals living in the community. Reiki can easily fit within the harm reduction model and can be successfully used in self treatment in combination with appropriate medical/psychiatric care by people with combined HIV and psychiatric diagnoses for emotional centering, pain management, and support in recovery readiness. Children with cancer and their families practice First degree Reiki on themselves and one another. Reiki is a supportive therapy for hospice and hospitals. Reiki appears to be an effective stress reduction technique that easily integrates into conventional medicine because it involves neither the use of substances nor manipulative touch that might be contraindicated or carry unknown risks, and because the protocol for Reiki treatments is flexible, adopting to both the need of the patient and of the medical circumstances. Reiki can be used to support conventional medical interventions. In addition, when used on a conscious patient, the experience is relaxing and pleasant, increasing patient comfort, enhancing relationships with caregivers, and possibly reducing side effects of procedures and medications. Staff report they enjoy giving Reiki treatments. Caregivers who routinely have to hurt patients in order administer needed medical care express gratitude for a tool that minimizes patient discomfort and quickly soothes distressed children. There is limited but promising preliminary research evidence for Reiki's use in pain management."

The International Association of Reiki Professionals provide also liability insurance to Reiki practitioners. National Health Freedom Organization A national organization has formed to work with anyone wanting to create legislation to protect our right to choose the heal modality we want without the threat of unnecessary government licensing. California Health Freedom Organization Several states have passed laws exempting alternative/complementary practitioners including Reiki practitioners from the medical practice act. This is a short bill from state of California which has been passed recently.

We had many people who came to us with pain, high blood pressure, tension, stress, emotional problems etc and after only few minutes of Reiki Treatments they felt much better and in many cases the pain and the tension has gone and they felt fully relaxed. It was even more challenging to relax considering all the noise around us.

The person who came for Reiki session was lying down on the massage table or sitting down on the chair fully clothed with eyes closed. Two, three or sometimes even four of us put our hands on that person's body and channeled Reiki Energy. If we felt that the healing needs to been done through the human body field (aura) we did so. The Treatment usually last 15 minutes as there were many people who wanted to experience hands on healing during the Fair. We all enjoyed doing healing at the hospital's Health Fair and we do trust that there will be many more opportunities like this one for us to share this beautiful healing art with everyone who really needs it.
