SIGNING FOR THE DEAF/HOH Purpose: To develop abilities and grow in knowledge, as well as provide services to the Deaf/Hard of Hearing in your congregations, giving glory to God and His Church Process: Each participating congregation will: Ensure participants select the best signing system for the Deaf/HOH in their congregation. ASL (American Sign Language) is the language of the Deaf in the United States and Canada, therefore if you have no Deaf/Signing members to guide you, it would be a safe choice. However, some school-aged children and some adults use Signed English systems such as SEE or CASE or a variety of other systems based on English. The important thing is to be considerate of the people you are learning sign language for and use the system of their preference!! The difference between the two major systems is this: ASL (American Sign Language) is a visual-spatial language which incorporates 5 major components: Handshape, Palm Orientation, Location, Movement and Facial Expression. The grammar in this language is encoded in the non-manual markers like: facial expressions, head movements, shoulder raises and body movements, classifier use, as well as mouth morphemes. It is also shown through repetition and the length/brevity of the sign. For example, SIT would be one short sign and CHAIR would bounce twice. ASL is NOT similar in word order or in grammar and syntax to the English language. A Sample sentence in English: The boy has the book, would be signed in American Sign Language with these signs: BOY HE, BOOK HAVE HE. SEE (Signed Exact English) is English on the hands. It uses the grammatical structure of English, changes some basic ASL signs to fit its needs and uses suffixes, prefixes, etc. It does not attempt to get the correct concept with the sign, but rather the correct English word/word order. Good resources for ASL are: Dr. Bill Vicars on lifeprint.com (has lessons you can watch, as well as a dictionary of signs, with explanations & background); handspeak.com Canadian Johanna Lapiak has a video dictionary of signs, as well as many articles about Deaf culture & examples of Deaf arts; ASL that! By Joseph Wheeler as well as youtube videos by Ken Nielsen and ASL NOOK by Sheena McFeely are excellent resources for specific topics/video lessons in ASL; deafmissions.com is a site with links to ASL sermons, children s programs, resources, a small dictionary AND the first ASL translation of the Bible for purchase on DVD. Your absolute best resource for learning American Sign Language is a Deaf friend or community member. We are blessed to have Kansas School for the Deaf, Deaf Culture Center and many more resources in the Kansas City/Olathe area and they constantly offer classes and other forms of direction for serving the Deaf population. ASL is not a language learned easily by book in fact that is the least recommended way of learning this visual language. Technology is making it much easier to learn at home

Participant Rule A participant may not watch other participants in the same level until he/she has completed his/her event. Participants will sign to the recording provided by the event coordinator at the convention. This will be the same recordings provided on the website. No other recordings may be used at convention. No signs or coaching instructions can be given to the participant while performing. In the event this should happen, the judges can request that the people involved leave the room for the duration of the performance. A solid color blouse/shirt/dress contrasting with skin tone shall be worn while signing. Jewelry should be minimal and participant will want to take off their name lanyard while signing. All participants will be pre-registered, by their church coordinator, in the appropriate time slots and in specific rooms. If a participant s name is not on the list or other changes need to be made, see the event coordinator for resolution prior to the event. All participants must meet at their assigned room 10 minutes prior to their scheduled time. Event Rules The participant will fingerspell their own name and the title of the selection being signed. On selections randomly picked by the judges (Level 3 only), the participant will fingerspell their name and the name of the selection chosen by the judge. Words will be provided by the event coordinator all for songs and scriptures and will be displayed for the participant. Participants will be judged on several elements, as listed in the rubric. Among these are: Preparation, Fingerspelling, Understandability/Sign Clarity, Expression, Vocabulary and on whether they wore clothing in keeping with the participant rule listed above.

NO GREATER LOVE LTC 2019 Level 1: Grades 3-6 Each participant will select one (1) song OR one (1) scripture from the selections provided by the event coordinator. Level 2: Grades 7-9 Each participant will select one (1) song AND one (1) scripture from the selections provided by the event coordinator. Level 3: Grades 10-12 Each participant will learn all 3 songs and all 3 scriptures provided by the event coordinator. Judges will randomly pull one song and one scripture at convention, and participant will perform those two selections. The selections are as follows: Song choices: 1) I Love the Lord # 359 (vs 1,chorus; vs 2,chorus; vs 3,chorus) 2) The Greatest Commands # 448 (all four verses are signed, in the order they come up in the song) 3) Jesus Loves Me #1014 (verse 1, chorus; verse 2, chorus; verse 3, chorus) NOTE: Participant must sign the songs in this order! Scripture choices: 1) John 15:9-13 2) Romans 5:5-8 3) 1 John 4:7-10

Song Lyrics: I Love the Lord #359 (Songs of Faith and Praise) Vs 1 I love the Lord, for He died my soul to save, On Calvary, His dear life He freely gave; From realms above, Jesus freely came to die, That I might live someday with Him on high. Chorus: I love the Lord, He has been so good to me, He gave His life, from sin to set me free; No greater love than His could ever be. I love the Lord, because He first loved me. Vs 2: I love the Lord, for he saved the lost from sin, He gave them life to be whole and free again; To live on high, with him never-more to die, Oh praise His name, we ll see Him by and by Chorus: I love the Lord, He has been so good to me, He gave His life, from sin to set me free; No greater love than His could ever be. I love the Lord, because He first loved me. Vs 3: I love the Lord, for His love so full and free, He taught us why that our love like His should be; To be like Him, and compassion freely give, Oh, bless His name, we then with Him could live. Chorus: I love the Lord, He has been so good to me, He gave His life, from sin to set me free; No greater love than His could ever be, I love the Lord, because He first loved me.

The Greatest Commands #448 (Songs of Faith and Praise) Verse 1 Love one another, for love is of God He who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, For God is love, God is love. Verse 2 Love bears all things, Believes all things, Love hopes all things, Endures all things Verse 3 God is love, God is love, God is love. God is love, God is love, God is love. God is love, God is love, God is love. God is love, God is love, God is love. Verse 4 Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with All thy soul, all thy strength, all thy mind, Love the Lord, thy God with all thy heart, For God is love, God is love, God is love. (on verse 3, ASL would not necessarily repeat the same signs over and over, but could find various ways to sign the meaning of God is love )

Jesus Loves Me #1014 (Songs of Faith and Praise) Verse 1 Jesus loves me! This I know, For the Bible tells me so Little ones to Him belong, They are weak but He is strong Chorus Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. Verse 2 Jesus loves me! He who died Heaven s gate to open wide; He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in. Chorus Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. Verse 3 Jesus, take this heart of mine, Make it pure and wholly Thine; On the cross You died for me, I will try to live for Thee. Chorus Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

Scriptures John 15:9-13 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. Romans 5:5-8 5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 1 John 4:7-10 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed His love among us; He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. 10This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

HOALTC Event: Signing for the Deaf Purpose Expectations Develop the ability and skills to interpret for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing in connection with worship and church settings. Coaches and participants will familiarize themselves with the expectations in the event rubric prior to beginning the project. If any participant needs special consideration, please see page 8 and complete the form by the registration deadline. Students may choose one of the forms sign language listed below for the event and will state their selected choice to the judges. o Signed Exact English (SEE) uses the grammatical structure of English and the signs of American Sign Language or Signed English with few syntactical changes (i.e. prefixes and suffixes). o American Sign Language (ASL) Conceptual Signing uses signs that convey the literal meaning, which often changes the original words and figurative language of the passage. This category is also appropriate for those signers using visual grammar or syntax. Features such as classifiers, non-manual markers, facial, grammar and mouth movements are appropriate for this category, but are not necessary. o Pigeon Signed English (PSE) a combination of SEE and ASL. A participant may not watch other participants in the same level until he/she has completed his/her event. Participants are encouraged to watch higher levels or other events after they have completed their event. Participants will sign to the recording provided by the event coordinator at the convention. No other recordings may be used. No signs or coaching instructions can be given to the participant while performing. In the event this should happen, the judges can request that the people involved leave the room for the duration of the performance. All participants must meet at their assigned room a minimum of 10 minutes prior to their scheduled time. On selections chosen by the judge, once the judge has announced the selection, no changes will be made in the selection.
