District 22W, Region III, Zone III Meeting on the first and third Tuesday at the Liberty Road Seafood and Steak 10524 Liberty Road, Frederick, MD 21701 District Governor Gerry Beachy February, 2019 From President Jack Niemiec Fellow Lions and Friends, President: Jack Niemiec (301) 831-6738 jan301@comcast.net 1st VP: Bob Flaherty (301) 846-9549 bf4900@aol.com Secretary: Bill Strauss (410) 756-4476 williamstrauss@msn.com Treasurer: Susan Baldwin (301) 606-1452 sbaldwin251@comcast.net Membership Chair: Marvin Curtis (301) 898-7112 curtisauctions@gmail.com Visit us at www.l-u-lionsclub.com and www.facebook.com/ Libertytown-UnionvilleLions-Club/ January disappeared! We only had one meeting on January 15 th at Liberty Road Seafood and Steak. Lion Sue Ensor lined up a nice presentation on Caption Call, which is a free service funded by the federal government for people who have difficulty hearing on the phone. The Caption Call phone allows you to hear and read your phone conversations. If you or a friend has this difficulty, I would suggest you take advantage of this service (www.captioncall.com or 1-877-557-2227). On Tuesday, February 5th, we are hosting the all Zone Region III meeting at Liberty Road Seafood and Steak. The Region III Chair is our own Lion Harry Swope. We will have our traditional opening and brief meeting before dinner. After dinner I will hand over the gavel to Harry who will continue with the all Zone meeting. This gives us an opportunity to see and hear what the other clubs in Region III are doing and thinking. I hope to see a nice turnout for this meeting. Our second meeting in February will be on the 19 th, we will prepare for our Friendship Night that is scheduled for March 5th. We are planning on playing Lions Jeopardy. It should be fun and educational for you and your guests. So please ask your friends and neighbors to join us on March 5th. Following Friendship Night, our Annual Country Breakfast is at the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department on March 17 th, St. Patrick s Day. So invite friends to help at our breakfast, especially those who have Irish blood running in their veins. If they attended Friendship Night, they know what we are about, now they can learn how we pay for the services we provide. Last Sunday, the Lions lost a giant when PDG John William Hopkins passed away. He served 26 years in the Baltimore County Police Department, retiring as a Detective Sergeant of the Homicide Division. He joined the Lions in 1990 and served in just about every position possible in District 22W. He was a true gentleman and was always ready to serve. God Bless you and keep you, John. Yours in Lionism, Lion Jack

Concerns Lion Marvin Curtis was admitted to FMH for tests relative to very high blood pressure. This was relieved with an angioplasty procedure. He reports that his blood pressure is now down ; he was released late Thursday night and is sore but feeling much better. Lion Jennifer Smith (Lions John & Betty Thompson s daughter) fractured her back on January 28 which required surgery at FMH. PDG Susan Timmons has been battling tumors in three locations which has kept her mostly on one floor of her home since Thanksgiving. Please keep these Lions in your thoughts and prayers. Club Dues Club dues for 2018-2019 year were due July 1, 2018. Our Treasurer reports that some members have not paid, so please get payment to Treasurer Susan Baldwin as soon as you are able. Visitations Visitations have been made to 7 of the 17 clubs we are scheduled to visit. Please make your scheduled visitation soon time runs out way too quickly! The visitation schedule is available at meetings from Lions John and Bill and on our web site for downloading and printing. January Meetings The first scheduled meeting of the new year was on January 1 st, and was cancelled. At the January 15 th meeting, we were visited by Mary Kay Morgan and Meta Hobson who spoke to us about innovations in audiology. Ms. Morgan is with the Frederick County Health Department and was assisted by Meta Hobson, also a hearing specialist. After a review of basic types and causes of hearing loss, we were presented with what aids (including hearing aids) are available to improve the life of hearing impaired folks and where those services and devices are available in the community. Ms. Hobson had with her a recently developed phone for the hearing impaired (Caption Call) which not only amplifies, but can record the conversation for playback helping those who miss parts of a conversation. This allows for going back to areas of the conversation where the meaning was lost thus capturing the full meaning of the phone call. Pictured, from left to right are: President Jack Niemiec, Ms. Hobson and Ms. Morgan after Lion Jack presented them certificates in appreciation of their interesting and informative program. The new telephone is shown on the right of President Jack on the table. What s Going On! Each month your editor emails all members of the club soliciting information, facts, stories, etc. which would be of interest to our Lions. Many of you know we have members who bowl in a Lions League and last month the snapshot shown below was received via text message. Remember this is Duck Pins and the high score for Lion Sue Ensor is right up there. Upcoming Meetings We will be hosting the Region III all-zone meeting for Region Chair Lion Harry Swope at our regularly scheduled meeting on February 5. The guest speaker will be Immediate Past Governor Susan Bonura. The February 19 th meeting will be devoted to preparing for the March 5 th meeting which is our annual FRIENDSHIP NIGHT so start making a list of those you plan to invite now. Annual Country Breakfast Our annual Country Breakfast will be one week later than in previous years - the THIRD Sunday in March which this year occurs on St. Patrick s Day. Also, we will not have to get up an hour earlier because of the change over to Daylight Standard Time! If you have a job you prefer doing at the breakfast, get in touch with the committee chairman, Lion Bob Ensor and let him know. Posters will be available at the February 19 meeting for posting in churches, post offices and other public bulletin boards. MD22 Convention The Multiple District 22 Convention will be held this year at Ocean City, Maryland from May 13-16. The secretary has the Registration Booklet which give all the details and includes a registration form. It starts with a golf tournament on Monday morning at 11 am and ends with a Victory Luncheon when we celebrate all the new district officers just elected and who won the 50/50 contest when hundreds of dollars are distributed to lucky Lions. Tickets are available from the secretary! 3

Kiss-a-Pig Contest The Walk for Diabetes event held for years in Baker Park was cancelled last fall and so the Kiss-a-Pig contest was moved this year to the 3 rd Cabinet meeting held on January 26 th. Our own Lion Harry Swope, Region III Chair, was a contestant so our $350 check for diabetes was assigned to him. The good news is, he didn t come in last and have to kiss the backside of the pig; but he did not get the opportunity to kiss the nose of the pig because perennial winner Lion Tom Harney of the Taylorsville-Winfield Lions Club was first once again. Lion Tom Harney (on the right) kisses the nose of the pig while 1 st VDG Evan Gillett, who came in last, kisses the other end as District Governor Gerry Beachy looks on. 70 th Birthday Lion Darlene Fogle is celebrating her 70 th Birthday this year - check it out on page 2! Her family planned a surprise celebration for her which was held on Sunday the 27 th. She was told to come to her church and help at a wedding anniversary party taking place at the church. She went to the kitchen to work, was given a platter of sandwiches to place on the serving table and when the kitchen door was opened, Look of Surprise! is Published monthly by the Lion Bill Strauss, Editor 1825 Francis Scott Key Hwy Keymar, MD., 21757-9319 All articles for the next newsletter should be submitted to the newsletter editor by February 27, 2019 You may contact him by calling : (410) 756-4476 or by e-mail williamstrauss@msn.com 4
