1 Staying Connected January 2018 We are blessed with a new year, new hopes, new resolutions, and new spirits. It is up to us to make new opportunities, new friends, new memories and new meaning in our lives. May you all have a promising and fulfilling Mark your Calendars On Thursday, February 15th, at 12:00 noon, the Founders Day Luncheon will take place at the Highland Country Club, 1922 Highland Heights. For details check out our website at News from the Board of Directors Nominating Committee In accordance with our policies, in February 2018 the Board of Directors will begin the process of requesting and accepting nominations of potential candidates for vacant positions on the Board. Potential candidates will be contacted and a list of Director Nominees will be submitted to the Board for approval. The names of Director Nominees are published three weeks prior to the AGM. There is a nominating form available for anyone who wishes to nominate a candidate. I have added a copy at the end of the newsletter One of the office computers needs to be replaced. The Board approved the expense of a replacement. SLR sponsored HLF's "Cityscape 150 Art and Photography Contest" ($150) to celebrate London's 150-year-old architecture (which includes GL) Jeff Keenor is presenting the prize to Amelia Husnik for her painting of GL. The Artist has donated the painting to Grosvenor Lodge and you can view it in the back entryway. Western has refused to allow us the use of parking behind the Coach House. HLF has cleared some areas beside the driveway for extra parking on the grounds. However, the Board feels that we need more permanent parking spaces and access from Platt s Lane during the continuing work on Wharncliffe Road. We will meet with HLF to continue lobbying for a better parking solution.

2 Following our policies the Board has also formed a committee to review and update SLR s strategic plan starting in September. Notices and Reminders Now that winter weather is here we request that all members remove wet, snowy, muddy boots and shoes when entering GL. We ask that you help protect the antique floors and carpets at Grosvenor Lodge. In the hallway there are benches to sit on to remove your outdoor footwear and boot trays for your wet boots. There are also extra slippers and boot covers for those who find it difficult to remove their boots. Have you checked out our SLR Facebook Pages? Peggy Matser from our Communication and Marketing committee has set up and monitors our two pages. SLR London Canada is our public page, where members and nonmembers are invited to LIKE it at London-Canada SLR London Members Group is for members only and you can join by clicking on the JOIN icon at Your request will be approved within 24 hours. You are welcome to post items on the members group page that you think might be of interest to members, or to comment on anything posted there! There are photos, videos and comments about SLR events as well as community events of interest to seniors. The ones of the Hottenanny are a real hoot! We are glad that everyone is enjoying the FREE coffee, tea and cookies. We do want to remind you to put a lid on your cup to prevent spills, (OOPS) and put both cup and lid in the recycling bin. SLR Office Our office is now located in the Grosvenor Lodge Coach House behind the main House. We want to welcome our office and membership coordinator Brenda Jackson back to SLR where she belongs! 3 The lucky winner of one of Brenda s Gingerbread Houses Fall Activities -Looking Back On Wednesday, November 25th, the winter 2018 Program Preview and Registration was held at Siloam United Church auditorium. It was an amazing success, with the most participants we have ever had for a program preview. The moderators and facilitators presented an engaging and creative preview of courses available. We thank all who worked so hard to make this event such a success. Susan Booth, Chair of Marketing and Communications, along with her committee, as well as our Registrar, James Baker and his team, ensured a smooth, efficient event. So far January has been a very busy month for SLR. Members were busy with the Moderator s Workshop held on Tuesday, January 5th; the Winter Open House on Thursday, January 7th, and the Presentation Workshop Thursday, January 18 th. The week of January 22th, 2018 our Winter Program began. We are certain you will have found a course or two to register for. We hope you will all enjoy your selections. Laugh of the Month Our Annual Festive Banquet was held on Thursday, December 7th at the Highland Golf and Country Club. SLR members and friends enjoyed good food, good company and good fun. Diana Lloyd and her social committee added another success to a long list of previous events.

4 Share with Us Friends of the Hyland Hi All! We had a good turnout on Sunday to see the film Faces Places. The ratings gave this film a 5 star, however we rated it between 6 and 8 out of 10. The art and photography depicted while travelling through France was impressive and innovative. This story about a friendship between an older woman and a young photographer was excellently done. A great discussion was enjoyed at The Wortley. Helen & Mary The SLR "Play Time" group lead by Mary Neill performed their one act play in a Rehearsed Reading on Tuesday November 28 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. James Westminster Anglican Church in Wortley Village. LASERS - Life After Sixty Elegant Retirement Suites is the story of 17 characters living in a retirement facility, their quirky character development and a surprising twist at the end of the play. Those of us who attended the event were presented with 90 minutes of amusing and witty entertainment. The script of Lasers was developed from improvisations by members of the class who created their own characters. BRAVO to the Director and Cast. Our city, London has lost an amazing citizen and our World a great human. Gina Barber We will remember not just that Gina died, but that she lived. Her life gave us memories too beautiful to forget, and it s hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember
