The road to safety starts with us.

Stay safe and confident in the driver s seat. As you age, your ability to drive can be a vital key to your independence. Our Driving Rehab Specialists work with you to gain the skills you need to stay safe, comfortable, and confident behind the wheel of your car, even as you experience age-related mental or physical changes. Our goal is to keep you as mobile, independent, and safe as possible for as long as possible. We provide a wealth of services for older adult drivers, including driving wellness consultations, specialized in vehicle evaluations, client education and support, and training for specialized adaptive driving equipment. If you need to cease driving, either temporarily or permanently, we will help you transition from driver to passenger.

What you can expect from Driving Rehabilitation from Genesis Get a referral from 1 your doctor. In order to begin driving rehabilitation with us, you must first get a referral from your doctor for OT Driving Evaluation and Treatment. You must also have a valid driver s license. We will work closely with your doctor throughout the driving rehabilitation process. Getting started with driving rehabilitation 2 Talk to your local Driving Rehab Specialist. Call 1-800-992-9711 to discuss your driving needs with a local Driving Rehab Specialist and schedule an appointment. Before starting your program with us, you will need to sign a liability and medical waiver. Complete a thorough 3 clinical evaluation. Your Driving Rehab Specialist will review your medical and driving history and evaluate any pain or discomfort. Next, you will perform a series of simple tests to assess your driving skills and identify any risk factors. These tests will measure your reaction time, motor skills, visual perception, cognitive skills, hearing, and general road knowledge. 4 Get real-life training & specialized education. Based on your clinical evaluation, you may be ready for an in-vehicle assessment. Your Driving Rehab Specialist may recommend the use of adaptive equipment and will provide education and training on any vehicle modifications. Our goal is to get you back on the road to independence.

Our Driving Rehab Specialists are with you each step of the way Driving Rehab Specialists are highly-skilled occupational therapists with advanced training in driving rehabilitation. Their role is to guide and support you through the driving evaluation, training, and/or transition process. Our Driving Rehab Specialists work with you to determine safe and reasonable goals for driving. Our modified training vehicles are equipped for your safety & a variety of driving abilities Driving Rehabilitation uses Chevrolet Impalas for all in-vehicle evaluations and trainings. Because it can be an adjustment to drive a vehicle that isn t your own, our Driving Rehab Specialists will support you through vehicle orientation and warmup before beginning your behind-the-wheel sessions. We ve modified each of our Chevrolet Impalas with instructor brakes, accelerators, and specialized adaptive equipment that allows us to work with drivers who may have limited abilities, such as decreased movement, paralysis on one side, or an amputation. In addition, our vehicles can also accommodate traditional drivers who do not require specialized equipment. We work with licensed, older adult drivers with a wide range of medical conditions, including: Cataracts Congestive Heart Failure Dementia Diabetes Diabetic Retinopathy Glaucoma Heart Attack Knee Replacement Left Foot Drop Mild Cognitive Impairment Mini-Stroke Multiple Sclerosis Neuropathy Parkinson s Disease Pulmonary Disease Recent Falls Sleep Apnea Stroke Syncope Traumatic Brain Injury A real-life story Betty learns to drive again after a leg amputation While recovering from a right-leg amputation and left-leg infection, Betty feared that she would never drive again. After listening to her concerns, Betty s doctor referred her to Driving Rehabilitation. Betty met with a GRS Driving Rehab Specialist for a comprehensive clinical evaluation. Much to her delight, this Driving Rehab Specialist determined that with the use of adaptive controls Betty could become an independent driver again. Our Driving Rehab Specialist initially focused on finding the best equipment and fit for Betty s safety and comfort. Betty then participated in training sessions to learn how to use hand controls in our instructor car. After ample training, our Driving Rehab Specialist wrote a prescription for Betty to have adaptive equipment installed into her own car. Betty credits Driving Rehabilitation by Genesis Rehab Services with helping her to get back behind the wheel of her car. Now that she can drive again, Betty has returned to work, fulfilling her ultimate goal of making the most of her recovery and leading an independent life.
