JANUS NEWS Janus of Santa Cruz Newsletter August 2016 Janus of Santa Cruz - 40 Years Of Helping & Healing You will note in the newsletter an article describing our 40 th Anniversary Celebration. 40 years of providing necessary health care services is a fine achievement in anyone s book, but 40 years of continual sustainability for a non-profit in this field is remarkable, and we feel blessed. However, while we do want to take a moment to celebrate the past 40 years, we are also very aware that we are entering a new phase of how treatment will be provided and funded. Janus has always prided itself on the services we provide to folks who have no insurance and are not able to pay for their care. Our Medication Assisted Treatment (methadone) and Perinatal programs were available to those who had Medi- Cal, but our other programs, such as residential and outpatient care, received limited amounts of public funding from various sources. Recently, outpatient care was added to the list of Medi-Cal reimbursable programs and, sometime in the next few months, residential detoxification and treatment will be added as Medi-Cal reimbursable programs. In other words, more care in more treatment settings for those who cannot afford to pay - that s the good stuff. With expansion of funding will come the inevitable growing pains. With more folks eligible for care, our already stressed and strained program capacities and staff will need to expand as well. The revenue side of our budgets will change radically. So, we ll be facing some new challenges over the next couple of years, but we ll be doing it with the knowledge that we have been building superb programs for the past 40 years, and we ll be doing it for another 40 years! Thanks for your continuing support and interest in what we do. -Rod Libbey CEO Photo: Grey3k That s what we re here on Earth for, to help others. - Betty Ford In This Issue: Prime For Life 40th Anniversary Recognition 1 Year at the Janus Sobering Center Upcoming Events Photo: Amiga

SC County Jail Sobering Center A New Program at Janus DUI Did you know that in 2013, 1,493 drivers were arrested for DUI in Santa Cruz county? 1 According the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were almost 10,000 alcohol-related fatalities in the U.S. in 2014 that s one every 53 minutes! 2 All over the U.S., DUI programs provide counseling and education services to convicted offenders in an effort to improve public highway safety. At Janus of Santa Cruz, we take pride in the quality services that our DUI counseling staff has provided over the course of this last fiscal year delivering effective services to approximately 381 DUI offenders in the Santa Cruz area. Because Janus is committed to reducing DUI recidivism and increasing public safety, we are pleased to announce the implementation of Prime for Life, an evidence-based, motivational intervention program tailored to meet the unique needs of court-referred, impaired driving offenders. This unique intervention emphasizes changing participants perceptions of the risks of drug and alcohol use and related attitudes and beliefs. Our counselors use empathy and collaboration to increase participant motivation to protect what they most value in life. On average, individuals who participate in the Prime for Life program exhibit a significantly lower 1-year re-arrest rate relative to comparison programs! We look forward to delivering the cutting-edge Prime for Life intervention program with the goal of continued improvement of public safety. 1 Daoud, S., Tashima, H., Grippe, R. One Year at the Janus Sobering Center The Janus Sobering Center diverts nonviolent, public inebriates away from costly jail beds while ensuring they are not being injured, victimized or putting others in harm s way. The Center is open 24/7 and accepts qualified adult public inebriates diverted from jail via law enforcement. Between June 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016, the Sobering Center has served 371 individuals across 533 sobering episodes. 21% of 647F cases are being diverted to the Sobering Center, exceeding the 20% goal of our grant objectives. Officers spend an average of 6 minutes at our facility versus the typical jail booking time of up to 105 minutes. In July, the Sobering Center had 65 diversions for the month more clients diverted than ever before! Combined annual cost savings for the Sherriff s Office and the Santa Cruz Police Department equaled $37,856.
