Busy Bees Childminding Services Tranent Child Minding Type of inspection: Unannounced Inspection completed on: 19 September 2017 Service provided by: Reekie, Catriona Service provider number: SP2015986831 Care service number: CS2015336543

The service Introduction The service was provided from the childminder's family home in the Tranent area of Edinburgh. The property was a detached villa with children being cared for on the ground floor. They had access to a dedicated playroom, sunroom, kitchen and living room. The back garden could also be used for childminding and was well resourced during our visit. This was the childminder's first inspection since registering in July 2015. The childminder conditions of registration allow her to provide a care service to a maximum of six children at any one time under the age of 16, of whom no more than three are not yet attending primary school and of whom no more than one is under 12 months. Numbers are inclusive of children of the childminder's family. What we did during our inspection We wrote this report following a short notice inspection that took place on 19 September 2017, between 12:30pm and 2.30pm. The inspection was undertaken by one inspector. Feedback was given to the childminder on the same day. During this inspection process we gathered evidence from various sources including discussion with the childminder and observations of two children who were present during the visit, one of which was the childminders own child. We considered the service's: - aims and objectives - certificate of registration - range of policies and procedures - personal plans and individual records - risk assessments - certificates for courses that the childminder had undertaken. We issued three Care Standards Questionnaires (CSQs) prior to the inspection, and received one completed before writing this report. We check services are meeting the principles of Getting it right for every child (also known as GIRFEC), Scotland's national approach to improving outcomes and wellbeing for children by offering the right help at the right time from the right people. It supports them and their parent(s) to work with services that can help them. There are eight wellbeing indicators at the heart of Getting it right for every child: safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included. We took the findings from the above into account for the purpose of reporting. for Busy Bees Childminding Services Tranent page 2 of 8

Views of people using the service The one minded child present during our visit was observed as being very relaxed and happy in her environment. She engaged and played happily with the childminder's son, and interacted well with the childminder. Both children were given equal amounts of attention and encouragement. Self assessment The Care Inspectorate received a fully completed self assessment from the childminder. She identified what she thought the service did well and gave examples of improvements which had led to positive outcomes for children. What the service did well During the inspection the childminder displayed a very caring, nurturing approach to her profession. She presented as being committed to the children and families she cared for. She had developed very good relationships with them. Another significant strength of the service was the environment and the range of activities and resources provided by the childminder. What the service could do better No areas for improvement were identified during this inspection visit. The childminder should continue to provide existing high standards. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good 5 - Very Good not assessed 5 - Very Good Quality of care and support Findings from the inspection During our visit the childminder spoke warmly about all the children in her care, demonstrating a very good understanding of their needs, interests and stage of development. She spoke to the child present in a caring, sensitive way. She created a nurturing, supportive, child centred environment. A settling in procedure was in place which promoted a gradual introduction to the service for the child and parent's. This included parents visiting the service to discuss their expectations and their child's care needs. This helped the childminder and a new family to get to know one another before starting. for Busy Bees Childminding Services Tranent page 3 of 8

The childminder supported children to be healthy and responsible. Children were regularly outside in the fresh air and playing energetically. If the group went on outings the children were encouraged to identify potential risks or other hazards for example dogs mess on pavements or identify safe places to cross the road. The childminder also shared information about the snacks and meals she provided. After a recent consultation with parents it was agreed that children would not be given snacks after 4pm, as some were 'grazing' and this could interfere with their night-time meal. The childminder had introduced a system where she focussed on the SHANARRI, (safe, healthy, active, nurtured, achieving, respected, responsible included) wellbeing indicators. These indicators are set out within the Scottish Government's initiative 'Getting It Right for Every Child' (GIRFEC), and are targets which providers strive to implement for every child. The childminder had created a star chart and SHANARRI wheel for each child which contained examples of specific learning underpinned by the wellbeing indicators. This was an ongoing piece of work and was regularly reviewed and updated for each child. We discussed with the childminder ways in which she could use the information she had gathered to create a personal plan for each child. Although the childminder had extensive evidence of children's learning and development, she had not detailed how she planned to meet their health, welfare and safety needs. The childminder had purchased and established an electronic system which allowed parents daily access to all information and records of their child's time at the service. This included the child's permission for outings and other aspects of care, as well as information on activities and outings they had participated in. Parents could make suggestions and comments through this electronic system. The regular use of the system by both the parents and childminder, will ensure all concerned have the most up to date information, allowing the childminder to meet the child's needs while in her care. Requirements Number of requirements: 0 Recommendations Number of recommendations: 0 Grade: 5 - very good Quality of environment Findings from the inspection The childminder's home was comfortable with a home-from-home environment for the children attending her service. She carried out a daily visual risk assessment to ensure the areas of her home and garden used for childminding purposes were clean, and free of hazards before minded children arrived. The childminder also carried out recorded, risk assessments before going on outings with the children. This helped to ensure the children were cared for in a safe environment which was well maintained. for Busy Bees Childminding Services Tranent page 4 of 8

The childminder had a wide range of age appropriate resources to meet the children's needs. This ensured that the children had a wide and varied range of play opportunities. The rear garden was fully secure and also very well resourced with a range of equipment for children of all ages. The children were very comfortable and appeared to have everything they needed throughout. When in the garden children could explore the mud kitchen, build and create with loose parts or keep energetic on the trampoline. We found the childminder made good use of the space she had available. The playroom was used as the main area for children, however all other areas were easily accessable. The childminder had a range of age appropriate toys for the children to play with. There was adequate floor space for the children to move around safely. Toys and resources were clean and well maintained. The childminder used a range of systems to prevent the spread of infection, including cleaning and helping children learn about good practice hygiene and healthy life styles. A number of policies were available and when implemented would ensure children were being cared for in a safe, clean and hygienic environment. Policies we sampled included Health and Safety, Child Protection and Infection Control. Risk assessments were in place and documented. The childminder told us if dealing with body fluids of any kind she would wear PPE, Personal Protective Equipment, this would reduce the spread of infection. Requirements Number of requirements: 0 Recommendations Number of recommendations: 0 Grade: 5 - very good Quality of staffing This quality theme was not assessed. Quality of management and leadership Findings from the inspection The childminder was committed to her own personal development. She was enthusiastic, motivated and took a pride in her profession. She had dedicated her own time to sourcing best practice guidance including Child Protection and GIRFEC. The childminder had applied and was due to attend Child Protection training (refresher) in October 2017, and it was her intention to under take a course of study to secure a recognised qualification. for Busy Bees Childminding Services Tranent page 5 of 8

She had contact with other childminders and accessed online publications and guidance including the Care Inspectorate website. She had sourced information on GIRFEC and the SHANARRI indicators and how these could be used to help her assess the children's wellbeing. She told us she intended to share this knowledge with the parents and children. The childminder had a broad understanding of regulatory issues and had submitted information to the Care Inspectorate when asked to do so. The childminder also involved her parents and children in reviewing her service. She had done this in a variety of ways including: questionnaires, daily diaries where appropriate, children's personal plans, and daily discussions. This ensured that children and parents were actively involved in planning and reviewing the service. Again the childminder used comments and feedback from the children and parents to improve the quality of the service. The childminder confirmed that she held appropriate insurance policies which may offer protection to both the childminder and families, in the event of any incidents.
