2 The service Introduction The childminder lives in a residential area of Lossiemouth 2 miles from the town centre. The aims of the childminder are to provide childcare in a safe and secure environment that is attractive to children. The childminder was registered with the Care Inspectorate in May 2011 to care for up to 6 children at any one time. What we did during our inspection We wrote this report following a short notice inspection that took place on Monday 10 October 2016 between 10am and 12 noon. The inspection was carried out by a Care Inspectorate early years inspector and feedback was given to the childminder on the day of the inspection. During this inspection process, we gathered evidence from various sources. We considered the: - aims and objectives - certificate of registration - range of policies and procedures - personal plans - health and safety risk assessments and hygiene and infection controls - public liability insurance certificate - training certificates for courses that the childminder had undertaken. We had a discussion with the childminder and observed five children who were present during the inspection visit. We issued four care standards questionnaires and received one completed questionnaire from parents. Views of people using the service During the inspection there were five minded children present. They all appeared happy and confidently interacted with the childminder and each other in the pleasant, homely environment. No parents were available on the day of the inspection. Two of the older children told us about their positive experiences and about what they got involved in while at the childminder's. Self assessment We received a completed self-assessment prior to our visit. This document details the areas of strength of the service and where the childminder believed she could improve. 3 What the service did well The childminder had created a very homely child centred environment. We saw children move around confidently in a relaxed manner. The childminder supported them when they needed reassurance and encouragement, she had formed very positive relationships with them and their parents. What the service could do better The childminder should further improve the current system for assessing risk within the home and while on outings. She should also review her policy and practice for administering medication. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good 5 - Very Good not assessed 5 - Very Good Quality of care and support Findings from the inspection We chatted with the childminder and her husband who was also present during the inspection. The childminder was able to describe how her service operated and how she planned and cared for the children she minded. She explained the settling in process for new children giving practical examples of children she was currently minding. This told us the childminder was flexible and adaptable to each families circumstances and requests. We viewed the information the childminder kept on each child and found this to be relevant, up to date and appropriate in meeting their individual needs. Each child had a personal plan that was updated and reviewed as and when required. Throughout the inspection we observed children who were very comfortable and confident in their surroundings. Most of them knew the environment well, with only one child having started on the morning of the inspection. Of the five children present the two oldest could tell us about their time at the childminders and how much they enjoyed it. One child told us about her love of arts and crafts and how she had asked the childminder for specific resources which the childminder purchased. As part of encouraging the children to adopt a healthy lifestyle the childminder provided healthy snacks and meals for the children attending her service. She had previously registered with the Food Standards Agency. In addition to a healthy diet children regularly took part in active, physical exercise including long walks to the park, beach and other local attractions. In door activities were also a regular event including toddler groups and soft play facilities. During the inspection we discussed the storage and administration of medication and found this could be improved. We ed the most recent guidance "Management of Medication in daycare and Childminding for Lineham, Tracey page 3 of 8

4 settings" to the childminder and advised her to review and up-date her policy and practice in line with this. See recommendation 1. Grade: 5 - very good Quality of environment Findings from the inspection The property was semi-detached with children having access to a dedicated playroom, kitchen, WC and large enclosed garden. Children could access these areas independently where appropriate for example school age children could go to the WC unescorted. During our visit the children used both indoors and outdoors and could also access both areas independently. Younger children were cared for in one section of the garden while the older children could move to an additional area which allowed them more physical activities including playing football. All areas were noted as being safe and free of any potential hazards. Outdoor equipment available during the inspection included bikes, scooters, prams and footballs, however children also confirmed that in the warmer weather they had used the outdoor area for all activities including arts and crafts. Children also had access to a good range of age appropriate toys and resources indoors. We saw older and younger children draw and make pictures. We also viewed examples of children works on the playroom walls. In addition to this children also played with imaginative toys and other construction toys. Equipment was stored safely but within children's reach, again children were able to tell us what equipment was available and where it was stored. We spoke with the childminder about safety measures within the home and how she managed risks. She explained that although children had access to the kitchen area they were never there unsupervised, as a result of this she had not fit a childproof lock to where the chemicals were stored. We discussed the potential risk to children from chemicals and asked the childminder to complete a risk assessment on this practice. In addition to this we asked the childminder to introduce a programme of risk assessment for any new outings, events or equipment that may be introduced to the service, as the current checklist risk assessments did not identify potential risks or describe measures to minimise these. Risk assessments should highlight potential dangers and also include how the childminder will take action to reduce the possibility of risk or harm. Quality of management and leadership Findings from the inspection The childminder managed her service very well. She was a member of the Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) and was kept fully informed of best practice and legislation through their s and literature. She also met regularly with other childminders in her area and shared good practice examples and relevant information The childminder had a good understanding of her role and responsibilities as a childminder and this contributed towards positive outcomes for the children she looked after. She had been proactive in attending training, including first aid training and a child protection workshop. The childminder had copies of a number of useful documents which helped extend her knowledge and understanding of childcare issues. For example, she was aware of the government strategy 'Getting it Right for Every Child' and the associated 'SHANARRI' indicators (Safe; Healthy; Achieving; Nurtured; Active; Respected; Responsible; Included) and Building the Ambition (recent national guidance which is in place to improve outcomes for children). She also recognised that she had an important role to play in keeping children safe and protected and had a written statement on child protection which informed parents of the action she would take, should she have any concerns about a child in her care.
