McNaughton, Linda Child Minding Type of inspection: Unannounced Inspection completed on: 15 June 2017 Service provided by: Service provider number: SP2004940905 Care service number: CS2011281961

The service Introduction The Care Inspectorate regulates care services in Scotland. Information in relation to all care services is available on our website at www.careinspectorate.com. This service registered with the Care Inspectorate in October 2011. Linda McNaughton provides a childminding service from her family home in Milnathort, in close proximity to the local primary school. The childminder is registered to provide a care service to a maximum of eight children up to the age of 16 years, of whom no more than six are aged under 12 years, of whom no more than three are not yet attending primary school and of whom no more than one is under 12 months of age. Numbers are inclusive of the childminder's family. Overnight service will not be provided. Mr Gerald McNaughton may be employed as an assistant. We discussed this during the inspection. Mr McNaughton has not worked as an assistant so Mrs McNaughton decided to have his name removed for the certificate. What we did during our inspection We compiled this report following an unannounced inspection, which took place on the afternoon Thursday 15 June 2017. The inspection was carried out by one inspector. We sent the childminder questionnaires to give to parents currently using the service. We received three completed questionnaires from parents before the inspection. During this inspection we spoke with the childminder and the children. We observed the care given by the childminder and looked at a number of documents including health and safety records and insurance. We check services are meeting the principles of Getting it Right for Every Child (also known as GIRFEC), Scotland's national approach to improving outcomes and wellbeing for children by offering the right help at the right time from the right people. It supports them and their parent(s) to work with the services that can help them. There are eight wellbeing indicators at the heart of Getting it right for every child: safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included. Views of people using the service The child who was present during the inspection was too young to share his views with us. He was very happy during the inspection. We saw him having his lunch playing with toys and watching television. He was very comfortable in the care of the childminder. for McNaughton, Linda page 2 of 8

Self assessment The Care Inspectorate received a completed self-assessment from the childminder. The childminder identified what they thought the service did well and gave examples of improvements relating to ongoing training and development and implementation of the GIRFEC principles. The self-assessment clearly identified some areas that the childminder believes can be improved and showed how she intends to do this. The childminder told us how she included the views of children and their parents in the self assessment process and how their feedback directed service developments. What the service did well The childminder provided a happy, secure and nurturing environment for children and young people. She had developed an excellent relationship with the children being cared for during our inspection, and very effectively supported. She knew all of the children very well and was able to change and adapt to meet their differing needs and personalities. She worked closely with parents and shred information regularly. This helped her to meet children's needs very effectively. What the service could do better The childminder should continue to keep up to date with current best practice and legislation and working in partnership with children, young people and their families to develop her service. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good 5 - Very Good not assessed 4 - Good Quality of care and support Findings from the inspection The childminder provided children with very good care and support. The child present during our inspection had attended the childminder's service for some time. He had developed a close relationship with the childminder she was aware of his individual needs and described the personalities of all of the children she cared for. She responded to their needs in a sensitive respectful way. Children were also involved in developing the service and had many opportunities to influence their time at the childminders home. There was a range of activities available to the children. Including colouring in playing with Hamma Beads and playing Minecraft. for McNaughton, Linda page 3 of 8

The childminder encouraged children and young people to be healthy through a range of highly effective, stage appropriate approaches. These included regular outdoor activities, healthy foods and snacks and helping children to learn about the importance of staying healthy, and ways that they could do this. Requirements Number of requirements: 0 Recommendations Number of recommendations: 0 Grade: 5 - very good Quality of environment Findings from the inspection The childminder provided a very good environment for children and young people. The home environment was clean, warm, welcoming and well maintained. Children and young people had access to a range of rooms for different types of play and activities. Effective arrangements were in place to limit the risk of the spread of infection. This helped to keep children and young people safe and healthy. We saw that the childminder had an excellent range of supporting documents to keep children safe. Children suggested they carried out fire drills regularly. The childminder ensured that children and young people were safe, whilst allowing appropriate levels of risk to support them to learn about keeping themselves safe. The childminder had been helping the children learn about staying safe, when out in the local community while they were out walking. We saw that the childminder included children in the planning of activities in the local community. They enjoyed going to local toddlers groups visiting a local the local meadows and visiting Historical Scotland sites. Quality of staffing This quality theme was not assessed. Quality of management and leadership Findings from the inspection The childminder kept up to date with good practice in a number of different ways. For example, through the internet, discussion with other childminders, participating in local childminding network meetings, Care News and Scottish Childminding magazine. The childminder had accessed a range of training opportunities, including: Respect me: Anti Bullying training, Building the Ambition and Paediatric First Aid. The childminder confirmed that she had discussions with parents about the service each day that they brought their child, in order to respect and include their views in her service. As mentioned in Care and Support when we asked the childminder about personal plans she was unsure of the requirement to have these in place and to share them every six months with parents. The childminder should keep up to date with the requirements in place for childminders. She should do this through the SCMA (Scottish Childminding Association) through The HUB and through discussion with other childminders. Please see requirement one. Requirements Number of requirements: 1 1. The childminder should put appropriate Personal Plans in place for children and should review these whenever appropriately or at least every six months.
