By Dr. Kirk Strosahl & Dr. Patricia Robinson Abstract: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a relatively new form of psychotherapy. It is an outgrowth of behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which has largely been the accepted method for treatment of conditions like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorders. It is an empirically based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies mixed in different ways with commitment and behavior-change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, relies on the philosophy of Functional Contextualism, a school of thought suggesting that words and ideas can only be understood within context and are hence frequently misconstrued because people have individual contexts. Another influence on ACT is Relational Frame Therapy, a form of behavioral analysis examining language and learning. Numerous clinical research studies have already demonstrated the effectiveness of ACT for mental health problems such as anxiety, stress, depression, pain, cancer adjustment and substance abuse. Workshop Details: Workshop I: Date Time Venue An Introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy 1 March, 2012 (Thursday) 9:00am 5:30pm Auditorium, 1/F, Christian Family Service Centre, 3 Tsui Ping Road, Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong This full day workshop is designed to expose participants to the basic concepts of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Attendees will learn the basic principles of functional contextualism and relational frame theory, which together explain the role of human language and thought in human suffering. The ACT Psychological Flexibility model is a unified clinical approach to the processes that create both human suffering and human vitality. Each component of the model will be described in clinical terms, with video examples, live role playing and experiential exercises used to demonstrate the practical impact of each component. Participants will learn core ACT interventions that can be applied with almost any type of clinical problem.
Workshop Details: Workshop II: Date Time Venue Advanced Clinical Training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy 2-3 March, 2012 (Friday & Saturday) 8:45am 5:30pm Auditorium, 1/F, Christian Family Service Centre, 3 Tsui Ping Road, Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong This two-day workshop is designed to help the audience acquire clinical skills with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and apply them to a wide range of clinical problems. The first portion of this training will expose the audience to a variety of ACT case formulation and treatment planning methods. Participants will learn about the concept of ACT response styles and how these can be readily assessed and manipulated in therapy. Principles for selecting treatment targets will be demonstrated as knowing where to start with ACT is often a difficulty for even experienced therapists. The bulk of the workshop will involve introducing participants to the ACT conceptualization and treatment of common behavioral health problems such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse, chronic pain, and health risk behaviors such as smoking and obesity. Each of these areas will be grounded in a specific case example and we will demonstrate how to generate brief, highly effective ACT interventions. Attendees will also learn how to apply ACT principles to the treatment of challenging patients (suiciality, self-mutilation, help seeking-help rejecting communication, non-adherence). Audience members are encouraged to bring in cases they might be struggling with, as this makes the process of role playing come to life. Registration Fee: Deadline: 20 February 2012 Workshop I An Introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy $1,000 Workshop II Advanced Clinical Training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy $1,800 Workshop I + Workshop II $2,500 For Full-Time Students, 50% off discount will be offered.
