Day 1 includes a foundational review of current research, and implication for evidence-based treatment as it applies to the IOSM therapy frameworks, goals and outcomes. The audience will learn to profile, assess and identify oral sensory deficits in individual clients. Day 2 is filled with hands-on practical analysis, implementation and demonstration of IOSM-Tools and Techniques (IOSM-T nt). Practical intervention strategies are highlighted through videotapes, case studies and lecture formats. 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience difficulty in engagement, communication and social relatedness because of poor regulation of arousal, attention, affect and action. Commonly, communication goals selected for children with ASD achieve verbal production without relatedness, mistakenly bypassing the critical need for solid establishment of engagement, affect exchange, and reciprocal interactions. Using the approach of IOSM therapy, the intimacy of oral facial contact inherent to oral sensory-motor techniques is modified and extended to serve as a portal for developing affective interactions and engagement using the speech structures while simultaneously developing speech and language capacity and expanding the social use of communication. This 2-day intensive workshop will allow participants to assess, plan and implement interactive oral sensory-motor (IOSM) therapy objectives within a clinical setting. You will learn how linking oral experiences to pleasurable affect can serve to improve affective interaction and engagement. When integrated into a home therapy program, IOSM techniques performed throughout the day as play and engagement activity promote the development of social interaction and create the opportunity for speech and language development. A foundational review of current autism research, and implication for evidencebased treatment of ASD, as it applies to the IOSM therapy framework, concept, goals and outcomes are examined on Day 1. The audience will learn to profile, assess and identify oral sensory deficits in individual clients. This is followed by hands-on practical analysis, implementation and demonstration of IOSM Tools and Techniques (IOSM-T nt) on Day 2. Practical intervention strategies are highlighted through videotapes, case studies and lecture formats. AUDIENCE: Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Behavioral Therapists, Psychologists, Pediatricians, Developmental Pediatricians, and other Professionals who live or work with Individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

3 What is Interactive Oral Sensory-Motor Tools and Techniques (IOSM-T n T)? T'n'T: An explosion of brain based therapy ideas that are immediately applicable for targeting multiple skills simultaneously, e.g. engagement, communicative intent, oral sensory-motor, and social pragmatics. T'n'T: A collection of interactive oral sensory motor (IOSM) tools and techniques to specifically establish the foundational skills of social communication. These skill objectives include: accommodation of oral tactile sensations, including oral defensiveness; improved processing of the tactile-proprioceptive-kinesthetic loop; development of engagement and eye contact; development of volitional voicing, including the sub skills of respiration and phonation control; development of vocal/verbal means end causality imitation, initiation and reciprocity; development of communicative intent; improvement of the neuromuscular capacity for speech; and reduction of inappropriate oral/vocal behaviors. T'n'T: Detailed demonstration of therapy materials and techniques that are linked to specific neurological dysfunctions. Easily available and affordable materials are used in unique ways to obtain engagement, social relatedness, and to stimulate, modulate or eliminate oral-vocal behaviors. Following analysis of the oral sensory seeking and avoiding behaviors, modulation of oral sensory needs is used to engage the client. Instead of wasting time trying to change the client's system, T'n'T uses the systems they have right now by customizing T'n'T to the client's oral sensory analysis profile. IOSM-T'n'T: Practical, relevant, immediately useable techniques representing clinical application of research findings based on the latest scientific information available. IOSM-T'n'T is appropriate for any disorder that would benefit from heightened awareness and dynamics of the oral mechanism, such as phonological disorders, dyspraxia, dysarthria, feeding, sensory integration disorder, and neurological impairments of various etiologies in clients of all ages. IOSM-T'n'T is particularly appropriate for earliest treatment of non-verbal and pre-verbal autism spectrum clients.

4 FACULTY: Theresha A. Boomgarden-Szypulski, M.A., CCC-SLP Theresha A. Boomgarden-Szypulski, M.A., CCC-SLP has enjoyed an extensive career in the oral communication field throughout the past 36 years. She earned her Bachelor s and Master s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of South Dakota. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Association, the ASHA-ACE Award and State Licensures in Speech-Language Pathology for Iowa and Illinois. Her career has included teaching at the University of South Dakota, the College of Charleston, Trident Technical College, and the Medical University of South Carolina. She served as the Diagnostic SLP for the Coastal Autism Resource Evaluation Clinic at the Medical University of South Carolina and for the South Carolina DDSN Autism Division- Coastal Autism Resource Evaluation Center in Charleston, S.C. In addition to clinical work, she has practiced in public schools, hospitals, nursing homes and home health agencies. She is a co-author of Great Therapy Ideas: Oral Sensory Motor Tool-Toys and Techniques and The Sound Of Learning: Why Self-Amplification Matters and chapter contributor to Auditory Processing Disorders: Management and Treatment. Theresha is the developer of Interactive Oral Sensory Motor Techniques (IOSM) and presents internationally on the use of IOSM Tools and Techniques in Autism Spectrum Disorders. She is a consultant for ExploraLearning, Inc. in Singapore and is a member of the Board of Advisors for Ovspring Developmental Center in Singapore. She is a member of the Advisory Board for the National Autism Association, USA. Mrs. Szypulski is the owner and founder of Accessing Better Communication, Inc. Her practice provides training in accent modification, corporate speech coaching, and evaluation and treatment of communication disorders with a specialty focus on treatment of autism, oral motor disorders, and central auditory processing disorders.

Understand implications of evidence-based treatment of ASD, as it applies to interactive oral sensory-motor (IOSM) therapy. Analyze oral sensory-motor deficiencies common in ASD and Oral Sensory Integration Dysfunction Determine interactive oral sensory-motor (IOSM) therapy objectives based on individual profiles.
