Member Highlight February 2018 Highlight Dean Wyatt Tulsa Chapter Member since July 2017 What was your first job after passing the CPA Exam? I actually didn t take the CPA exam until I had been out of school for 10 years and started my second tour in public accounting. The advantage of waiting 10 years was showing up for the Becker review course and thinking Oh, this is what I just did all day at work, which really helped when I finally took the exam. Where did you receive your accounting degree? Oklahoma State University What type of accounting do you practice? I spent over 20 years in public accounting and now I m the controller of a manufacturing company. How do you give back to the community? I currently serve on two non-profit boards. I m the board president of the Tulsa Artists Coalition and I m also on the board of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. I also am the treasurer for the Tulsa Arts District Business Association. I previously served on the Tulsa Ballet Board. How do you benefit from your Tulsa Chapter membership? Primarily through networking opportunities and the reasonably priced CPE hosted by TCOSCPA. If you would like to nominate someone to be featured as our Member Highlight please contact Enid Strain at enidstrain@gmail.com As a CPA what trends do you see evolving? When I was still in public accounting, one big trend seemed to be the move toward technology, such as the utilization of data mining tools or in cloud computing in general. Also there seemed to be a trend, especially in the larger firms, to try to be a one stop shop for clients, that is to offer services beyond tax and assurance services, such as financial advisory and legal services. What would someone be surprised to learn about you? Most people are surprised to learn I m an abstract painter, as that seems contrary to the stereotypical structured left-brained accountant. I have a studio at Urban Art Lab in Tulsa and have been fortunate to show my work in galleries in Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado and have my work featured at the Oklahoma State Capitol. What book are you currently reading? Mostly the GAAP Guide. Name one short term goal? Survive the busy season! 4
