One Participant s Stry Meet Deb Bjrk wh was first diagnsed with Breast Cancer July 11, 2008 at age 36. Abut 12 years ag thrugh a self breast exam, I had discvered a lump in my right breast that I had immediately evaluated. It did nt shw up n a mammgram but was apparent t the tuch. An ultrasund was dne t evaluate it further. They determined it was mst likely fibrid in nature, but given the discmfrt and lcatin f the lump, I decided t have it remved. Abut 6 mnths after the surgery, a lump recurred in the exact same lcatin. Dctrs cncluded it was the same fibrid type, especially given my age and n family histry f breast cancer, s nly peridic clinical exams alng with my mnthly self-exams ensued mnitring fr any future lump s r the existing lump s grwth. Prir t cnceiving my first child, I went fr a cmplete physical t make sure I was in gd shape. My primary dctr insisted we again check the existing lump with a mammgram and ultrasund, since it had been sme time since it had been dne. I am thankful fr her insistence n ding that! At that evaluatin, the radilgist determined that there was a cluster f cells frming in that same breast and said that we shuld keep an eye n it in the future. N change in the existing lump ccurred, but the cluster was always in the back f my mind. I had mved ut f state prir t giving birth, s had n medical cnnectins in my new hme. I had given birth t my daughter and breastfed fr abut 4 mnths, all the while having difficulty prducing milk in that same lumpy breast. I stpped breastfeeding due t the frustratin f my daughter nt receiving enugh milk and chse t frmula/bttle feed instead. I understd that being a new parent wuld be tiresme but smething did nt feel right, I never felt like my ld self. Trust yur instincts; nbdy knws yur bdy better than yu! Having just breastfed, I was uncertain f the changes in my breast tissue. I als had gestatinal diabetes while pregnant and thught that maybe diabetes was a factr in my fatigue. I again thankfully, made multiple appintments fr a full physical, including mammgram and ultrasund based n the existing lump and cluster, lking fr answers t my fatigue. I had a mammgram and ultrasund and was tld at that appintment I needed a bipsy. Bipsy had never been mentined r dne befre, s I assumed it was nt a gd sign. Three days later by phne, I received the news and diagnsis f breast cancer. That was the hardest day f my life. It was caught early and I am a survivr! My participatin in Susan G. Kmen fr the Cure s visin f A Wrld Withut Breast Cancer started when I chse t walk 60 miles in the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefitting Susan G. Kmen fr the Cure in 1999 as a supprter and I nw chse t walk as a survivr! Because every 3 minutes a wman in America will hear the wrds, Yu have breast cancer, I chse t supprt The Race fr the Cure t walk with friends and family but mst imprtantly with my 2 year ld daughter. It is my hpe that any participatin r fundraising n my behalf will be helpful. I am grateful that this strng and passinate rganizatin prmtes awareness, funds research, supprts thse less frtunate in need f medical care, and ultimately believes in a cure fr breast cancer. It prvides a wnderful netwrk f infrmatin and an utlet fr cnnecting with thers. Susan G. Kmen supprts an imprtant cause that brings psitive utcmes and utlets t a frightening disease that affects everyne. My daughter will have t be screened beginning at age 25, but hpefully with the help f everyne invlved and the Susan G. Kmen fr the Cure they will find a cure sn. Besides, there s nthing better than a walk by the lake n an early fall mrning. Withut the cures fr breast cancer, mre than 25 millin peple will be diagnsed and 10 millin culd die in the next 25 years. 75 percent f the mney raised by the Susan G. Kmen Chicag Race fr the Cure stays in the Chicagland area t fund screening, treatment and educatin prgrams thrugh the Lcal Grant Prgram. The remaining 25 percent supprts the Natinal Research Fund, which is dedicated t helping peple arund the wrld. Dnating t the Kmen Chicag Race makes an impact--lcally and Glbally! Glbally Wrldwide, breast cancer is the mst frequently diagnsed cancer in wmen. Breast cancer is the leading cause f death amng wmen wrldwide. In develping cuntries like India, mre than 2/3 f wmen are nt diagnsed until their cancers are in advanced stages. Thrugh its Glbal Initiative, Kmen s Curse fr the Cure (CFTC) has trained 700 activists and advcates frm 28 cmmunities in 10 cuntries with nearly 350 different rganizatins, businesses and institutins participating. CFTC is creating a dynamic Glbal netwrk f dedicated activists t play a strategic rle in shaping their cunty s respnse t breast cancer. Natinally Kmen helped fund 500,000 breast cancer screenings acrss the natin this year. Kmen grassrts advcates acrss the cuntry have garnered mre than $72 millin fr state breast cancer prgrams. Lcally Thanks t a Kmen grant, 375 wmen will receive cmprehensive breast cancer educatin, a clinical breast exam and a mammgram Thanks t a Kmen grant, nearly 500 lw-incme wmen will receive a mammgram.
