Directions: Read and annotate the passage below and be prepared to watch a short video. Glue this paper in a your science notebook! Anatomy uses a precise language to communicate specific areas and structures in a medical setting. Every year, some patients have perfectly healthy body parts removed or operated on because someone used incorrect terminology, causing confusion for the medical team. Learn your anatomical terminology well. Your future patients will thank you for it!
Important Announcements This Week Tuesday 10/17 ü Teachers to submit 10 week grades by 5pm Wednesday 10/18 ü Parent/Teacher Conferences @ 5pm Thursday and Friday 10/19, 10/20 ü No school Teacher Planning Days!
Standard AP 2.1 Explain the anatomical position and the terms that describe relative positions, body planes, and body regions.
Directions: Watch the video. Recorder write down an I wonder question on the whiteboard. Strength Project Video (3 min)
Directions: Turn to the next page in your notebook and GLUE in this picture!
Anatomical position Body upright with feet together Arms at side with palms forward The anatomical position is the common visual reference point.
Superficial: Deep: Toward or at the body surface Away from the body surface; more internal
Superior: Inferior : Toward the head or upper part of the body Away from the head or toward the lower part of the body
Anterior: Toward or at the front of the body; (ventral) Posterior: Toward the back of the body; behind (dorsal)
Medial Toward or at the midline of the body Lateral Away from the midline of the body Intermediate Between medial and lateral structures
Proximal: Closer to the origin of the body part, or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk Distal: Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Checking for Understanding 1. The heart is to the lungs. 2. The thumb is to the wrist joint. 3. The kneecap (patella) is to the ankle joint.
Directions: Watch the video. Recorder write down an I wonder question on the whiteboard. Strength Project Video (3 min)
Directions: Glue both picture in your notebook and take notes!
The body is often sectioned (cut) along a flat surface called a plane. The most common body planes are sagittal, frontal and transverse which are at right angles to each other.
The frontal plane divides the body into anterior and posterior sections Also called a coronal when referencing the head.
A transverse plane runs horizontally and divides the body into superior and inferior sections. Transverse sections are also called cross sections.
The sagittal plane lies vertically and divides the body into right and left parts. The sagittal plane lies exactly at midline and is also referred to as the median or midsagittal plane.
1) Joseph runs up the ramp to science class and gives Ms. Fine a high five! Does he contact the anterior or posterior side of his hand with Ms. Fine? 2) Ms. Fine passes back Blanca s unit test during science class. Blanca has earned an A and Ms. Fine is so proud of her! She extends her fist out for a fist bump to celebrate. Does Blanca contact the anterior or posterior side of her hand for the fist bump?
3. Zoe runs up the stairs to science class. She is moving through the body plane. 4. Ernie arrives on time to science class and shakes Ms. Fine s hand. This handshake is moving through the plane. 5. Keith is seated in his assigned seat and rotates in his seat to get out his ipad from his backpack. This rotation is movement through the plane. 6. Craig is playing with his 4 year old nephew Joshua. Craig puts his arms out pretending he is an airplane and runs around the apartment. Joshua is so excited that he pretends to be an airplane too. Craig and Joshua s arms are moving through the body plane.
Directions: Work with your group to complete 4 activities.
Standard AP 2.1 Explain the anatomical position and the terms that describe relative positions, body planes, and body regions. Objective Define anatomical position. Describe 10 anatomical terms, body planes and body cavities.
DIRECTIONS: 1. Work with your group to complete the activity 2. The completion of this activity is the EXIT SLIP! When you are done tear off the last page turn in the exit slip tray!
