1. Anxiety Disorder cont. B. Panic Disorder & Agoraphobia - Panic Attacks - a period of intense fear. Shortness of breath, dizziness, rapid heart rate, shaking, sweating, choking, nausea, & / or other distressing discomfort. - Agoraphobia- fear of crowded or public places, having panic attacks.

1. Anxiety Disorder cont. C. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Excessive or unrealistic worry about life circumstances that lasts for at least 6 months. Typically over finances, work, personal problems, accidents, & dating

1. Anxiety Disorder cont. D. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - individuals are unable to stop thinking the same thoughts or performing the same tasks E. Stress Disorders- physical & mental strain caused by a traumatic event.

1. Anxiety Disorder cont. Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD)- suffering of intense fear, avoidance of stimuli & flashbacks from a past traumatic event Symptoms- May occur 6 or months after the traumatic event & last for yrs flashbacks, nightmares, numbness of feelings, tension, irritability.

1. Anxiety Disorder cont. Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD)- suffering of intense fear, avoidance of stimuli & flashbacks from a past traumatic event Symptoms- May occur 6 or months after the traumatic event & last for yrs flashbacks, nightmares, numbness of feelings, tension, irritability.

1. Anxiety Disorder cont. Acute Anxiety Disorder- symptoms similar to PTSD, but follows immediately after the event & lasts a shorter period. (days)

Causes of Anxiety Disorders 1. Psychodynamic - repressed urges that surface abnormally as obsessions & compulsive behavior(no longer believed) 2. Learning Theorist - phobias are learned in childhood through association - Learned by watching parents get scared

3. Cognitive View - - People feel helpless to control situations. Creates Anxiety 4. Biological View - Genetics - Twin studies show a 45% chance of anxiety in both twins Both - Panic disorder: may be biologically prone to overreact w/panic. After 1st panic, fear of another panic attack takes over
