Course Aim To review / revise the use of acupuncture as a modality in the treatment of pain. To consolidate / refine the participants with acupuncture skills and techniques for therapeutic purposes. To update current acupuncture practice for participants who have attended an approved course. Main Learning Strategies Keynote lectures and demonstrations will be used to introduce treatment concepts to participants and also to enhance the understanding of taught and practical elements of their previous learning. A problem solving approach will be used in practical sessions. This will provide the participants the opportunity to integrate knowledge and understanding acquired in previous professional practice and to further develop their therapeutic skills. ACUPUNCTURE UPDATE / REFRESHER COURSE TUTOR BIOGRAPHY Mr Kam-Wah Mak BSc, Dip Ac, Cert. Ed., MCSP Chartered Physiotherapist, Advanced Member and Approved Trainer of Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) Tutor biography After graduating in Applied Biology in 1984, Mr. Mak worked for 6 years at the Regional Immunology Centre (Newcastle on Tyne) as Medical Scientist on humoral and cellular immunology. After graduating a second time in 1993; this time in Physiotherapy, he gained wide experience in the musculoskeletal field at several NHS hospitals in the North of England. He became employed in private practice for a short spell in 1997 where some of his time was spent treating professional athletes. He then moved into full time higher education for the next five years, lecturing in Physiotherapy first at University of Teesside and then a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. After leaving higher education in 2002, he worked part time for two years as a clinical specialist in musculoskeletal field in a leading NHS hospital and in his spare time, he delivers postgraduate education in acupuncture and related topics throughout the UK. He is currently researching into Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage and Manipulation) and seeking ways to integrate this form of manual therapy into mainstream physiotherapy practice. He also finds time after leaving the NHS for a second time in developing his multi-disciplined private practice with clinical loads primarily in the area of complementary therapy, secondly in musculoskeletal and sport medicine. Mr Mak is an advanced member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) with a Postgraduate Diploma in Acupuncture gained in 1996 at Nottingham. In parallel to the acupuncture study he also attended Sunderland University on a teaching course, which led to a Certificate in Education awarded in 1996. He is an active promoter of research and on the use of acupuncture in the North East of England. Mr Mak has been an approved trainer of the AACP for a number of years and is currently an active member of the Education, Training and Research Committee (ETRC) of the AACP. Since 1997, Mr Mak has run numerous acupuncture courses in the UK and is at the forefront of educational initiatives with a long experience in the delivery of up-to-date, practical acupuncture education throughout the UK.
