CANADA 150 ATLANTIC TO PACIFIC CELEBRATION An All Canadian World Record Celebration 1

Canada 150 Atlantic to Pacific Celebration Significance: Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017! This is an historic moment with the power to bring people and communities together as we celebrate our heritage, values and our sense of pride and attachment to Canada. Celebrate Canada s 150th birthday in 2017 from coast to coast! Provide Canadians with opportunities to actively participate and celebrate together. Promote and build deeper understanding of Canada, its people and what it means to be Canadian. The Project is composed of: Simultaneous Celebratory Drumming across Canada Commemorative Dinners 2

Simultaneous Celebratory Drumming across Canada *sample photos

Simultaneous Celebratory Drumming across Canada In Canadian Culture, drumming is associated mostly with entertainment or as an add-on to the musical quality of a song. However, in many of Canada s ethnic cultures, including First Nations, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, African and so many other cultures which form Canada s cultural mosaic, drums are important symbols for any manner of ceremony births, deaths, marriages often combined together with a ritual dance. The act of an individual drumming gives power, symbolism, and voice to celebrate important events and Canada s 150th Birthday celebration should not occur without the powerful symbolism of significant drumming giving voice to the many groups, peoples, and communities which helped to build Canada, and who want to celebrate Canada s diversity through the unity that drumming will bring. 4

Simultaneous Celebratory Drumming across Canada (cont d) Date: Saturday, July 1, 2017 Participating cities and locations: 8 major cities across Canada, they are: Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary and Vancouver Other cities and towns throughout Canada are encouraged to participate in this Project with support from local government, school boards, community centres and Chambers of Commerce Additional drumming sites may be arranged according to sponsors request 5

Simultaneous Celebratory Drumming across Canada (cont d) Start time: 10:20am PST (2:20pm AST) (Actual Start Time: to be finalized) Drumming duration: 10 minutes Format: Following the first strike of drum by our special guest(s), 1,800 drummers in all 8 cities and other participating cities and towns will follow and echo with their drumming. We will invite and encourage drummers from all Canadians First Nations, Francophones, and ethnic communities, such as Chinese, South Asian, Korean, Japanese, Filipino, etc. 6

Simultaneous Celebratory Drumming across Canada (cont d) Creating a Canada Virtual Map Quilt: Participants are encouraged to document their drumming through pictures, video or social media, and upload it into our project website Canada Map to form a unique Canadian Virtual Quilt that they can view or share between loved ones or colleagues for generations to come. 7

Simultaneous Celebratory Drumming across Canada (cont d) A World Record Celebration: We are also looking into the possibility of achieving a Guinness World Record for the Largest Group Drum Roll (Multiple Venues). Current record was set in Germany, August 30, 2009, 1682 participants, 5 minutes 2 seconds. 8

Over 5,000 guests will be invited to join the Commemorative Dinners in 8 cities to celebrate Canada s 150th anniversary of Confederation *this is a sample photo

Funding Designation Proceeds are designated to achieving our goal of having as many people to participate in simultaneous drumming in as many cities as possible to celebrate Canada 150 on July 1st, 2017 with a Guinness World Records. Your support and partnership would give: People of First Nations, ethnic groups, students and youths a chance to join this meaningful project by forming a core drumming group The general public in as many cities and towns as possible throughout Canada an opportunity to participate in the drumming event If raised funds are adequate and available, we will try to expand drumming celebrations outside Canada to key cities with large numbers of overseas Canadians.
