Simultaneous Celebratory Drumming across Canada In Canadian Culture, drumming is associated mostly with entertainment or as an add-on to the musical quality of a song. However, in many of Canada s ethnic cultures, including First Nations, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, African and so many other cultures which form Canada s cultural mosaic, drums are important symbols for any manner of ceremony births, deaths, marriages often combined together with a ritual dance. The act of an individual drumming gives power, symbolism, and voice to celebrate important events and Canada s 150th Birthday celebration should not occur without the powerful symbolism of significant drumming giving voice to the many groups, peoples, and communities which helped to build Canada, and who want to celebrate Canada s diversity through the unity that drumming will bring. 4
