No 4182 Tuesday 2nd November 2010 02977L Weekly report Tuesday November 2 Dear members, what an interesting meeting we had on Tuesday. With the Melbourne Cup focussing our attention on the day we had two interesting speakers and the cup sweep at the meeting. Jahangir Alam, visiting from Bangladesh, spoke to us about the Club Foot Project that he is helping to coordinate. After the successes of the Cleft Palate Project that continues to help thousands of children, and their extended families, this new project will focus on the club foot deformity that affects 5000 children every year. A new treatment gives hope and a brighter future within 8 weeks of treatment and the support of Rotary clubs from Bangladesh, USA, UK and now Australia is sought to support this treatment. As has happened with the Cleft Palate project this treatment done within Bangladesh costs just $200 and the Walk For Life project is an example of the opportunity we have to give a future to these sufferers, that would otherwise go untreated. Chair of the day, Kaye Graves, then introduced our guest speaker Marie Whitrow, who spoke about the Asperger Autism Disorder. Marie has authored a book An Extraordinary Gift The Australian Asperger s Resource Guide and spoke from the heart as the mother of a teenager with the disorder. Marie spoke of the concerns parents face with the lack of funding for support of both the sufferers and their respite networks. She implored members to be more informed, more tolerant and more supportive at any opportunity you have influence, do you use it, are you aware? Marie can be contacted at the Bendigo Autism Asperger Group on 0417 057 672 or info@bendigoautism.org.au and details of local services or event details can be found at www.bendigoautism.org.au Bryan McMahon followed up with the Melbourne Cup Sweep and winners of the two $5 sweeps and two $2 sweeps can now be announced: 1st place in the $5 sweeps, Michelle Robertson and Brian Figg $60 and the $2 sweeps, Graham Newton & Alan Cox $24. We need to fill 70 shift positions and numbers are a bit low at the moment. Also please note the change of date in the calendar for the Christmas afternoon tea for senior members, now November 28. Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program alumnus, Francis Kabosha is busy repatriating refugees in Zambia back to their homeland in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Through the repatriation process, Francis also educates the leaders of the repatriated groups in the ways of peace to help them build and maintain peace in their home areas. He recently called his fellow RPCS alumnus, Abdulai Jalloh, logistics officer for the United Nations in DRC, to say, I m giving them the tools to build peace, you must ensure they reach their destinations safely. Francis and Abdulai now work together to build peace in the region. Keep in mind, every dollar contributed to The Rotary Foundation goes to actual program spending.
