The Steering Committee of Knut Dahl-Jorgensen (President), Peter Swift (Secretary- General) and Kaichi Kida (Treasurer) would like to take this opportunity of thanking the previous officers particularly Martin Silink, our immediate past President, for their unstinting and most effective work in moving forward the organisation and achievements of the Society. We really do believe that with its broader and bigger membership, ISPAD is now a Society with a much greater and more influential voice in the world of diabetes and its scientific standards will continue to advance. Thanks were expressed in the Business Meeting in Graz to retiring Advisory Council members, Mikael Knip and Kenneth Robertson, and for the continuing marvellous work of webmaster, Ragnar Hanas. Since Graz the third Science school for 20 younger members has been held in Toronto, organised by Denis Daneman and his team. Reports from both participants and teachers were extraordinarily positive and we would like to express our very grateful thanks to Denis for all his hard work in making the third science school so successful and thanks to Eli Lilly for sponsoring this valuable event. 2. Membership. New members continue to join but unfortunately the Treasurer is having to write to a substantial number of members who have failed to pay their subscriptions for more than two years. If there is not a rapid response from these members it will be assumed that they wish to discontinue their membership. Please note the changes on the ISPAD website with respect to application for membership. Unfortunately as yet the form still has to be Faxed or sent by post. 3. Annual Scientific Meeting and Travel Grants St. Malo, FRANCE Wednesday September 3 rd - Saturday Sept 6 th 2003. The convenor, Jean-Jacques Robert has set up an impressive website and has called for abstracts for the meeting. The scientific content of the meeting and the (anonymous) judging of the abstracts will be the responsibility of the

scientific committee appointed by the President last year. All the details of the meeting can be accessed via the ISPAD website www.ispad.org including the dates of abstract acceptance etc. Younger members who have their abstracts accepted may apply for Travel Grants the details of which are appended to this letter. Please note the final date of receipt of applications by the Secretary-General is June 10 th. 4. Elections The new constitutional arrangements mean that we have some very important elections for this year. (a) A President elect will be required for the period 2003-2004 and to serve 2004-2005 (b) The Secretary-General may be re-elected for a second term and in order to ensure continuity within the Steering Committee, Peter Swift is willing to be re-elected for a one year period only (until 2005). (c) A Treasurer elect will be required for the period 2003-2004 and to serve 2004-2005 (d) We need to replace 4 members of the Advisory Council (Shui-Xian Shen, Warren Lee, Reinhard Holl and Georgeanna Klingensmith) but again in order to maintain continuity we would propose that this year we elect 3 medical members and 1 non-medical (and the same next year). Please see the nomination forms and please note that nominations must be with the Secretary General before July 1 st. Members who have previously been Advisory Councillors may be re-elected if there has been a gap of one term out of office. 5. Visiting Fellowships The Visiting Fellow for 2002-2003, Dr Iveta Dzivita (Latvia) who is studying enterovirus biology in Amsterdam will be asked to report on her work for the society. Applications are now welcome for visiting Fellowships for 2003 and 2004 (see appendix). 6. ISPAD Prize for Achievement 2003 We have been very proud to award the prize, ISPAD s highest honour, to Professor Johnny Ludviggson in 2001 and in Graz to Professor Hans Akerblom. Please see the nomination details as an appendix to this letter. 7. Science School 2003 As announced to members and on the website, Dr Stephen Greene is organising the 4 th ISPAD Science School in St. Andrews, Scotland November 16-21 2003. Please ensure that your young and enthusiastic colleagues are informed about this exciting science training experience. 8. International Diabetes Federation (IDF) The triennial meeting is in Paris August 24-29 immediately preceding ISPAD. Knut Dahl- Jorgensen has been awarded the privilege of delivering the ISPAD IDF lecture. The title will be The prevention of diabetic complications and atherosclerosis starts in childhood. During the meeting voting will take place to elect the President for 2006-2009. As you know we have nominated Martin Silink and many influential votes will be cast by Diabetes Associations so please contact your national association to promote Martin s most worthy candidature. I have a copy of our nomination letter if any member wants it to send to their association. 9. Standardisation of HbA1c Some members may have heard that the International Federation of Clinical Chemists

(IFCC) had proposed that HbA1c levels be globally harmonized based on a new stable peptide callibrator resulting in new reference ranges very different from those in use at the moment. Following an international meeting in Kyoto, Japan in November it was decided that no change will be made yet but that DCCT group and IFCC should collaborate closely on this project before final decisions are made within the next year. 10. Future ISPAD Annual Scientific Meetings Singapore, November 2-6, 2004, Convenor Warren Lee (ispad2004@mpgroupasia.com) Krakow, Poland August 31-September 3, 2005, Convenor Przemyslawa Jarosz-Chobot Dr. Peter Swift Secretary- General ISPAD, March 2003 Appendices: Nominations for elections to office deadline July 1st Visiting fellowships deadlines June 1 st and December 1 st ISPAD Prize for Achievement deadline May 20th Travel Grant Forms for St.Malo deadline June 10th
