THE BENT TWIG A monthly newsletter of the American Bonsai Association of Sacramento October 2017 Tuesday October 24, John Cota Creating Saikei John will give us a thorough demonstration on creating a Saikei (rock) planting. There are many versions of this bonsai art form, some with many complimentary plants styled into a mountain scene and others with a simple display of highly styled material on a selected rock framework. John s demonstrations are always packed with useful information and techniques he s learned over his many years of experience. We ll have to see what John has in store for us this month. And, of course the work of art will be raffled at the end of the meeting. For the Pre-Meeting, Kathleen will fill in for Doc with a session on general tree care. Please bring in your trees for advice, styling hints and answers to what to do next. Show and tell, bring us your Saikai and rock plantings.

At our last meeting Tuesday September 26 Doc treated us to an in depth demonstration on the creation of a root over rock planting. He s done a lot of these and has great experience with what works and what doesn t. Here are a couple pictures of his demo. Doc was a busy guy that night as he did another chapter of his Pre-Meeting Study Group. This program is gaining in popularity. We ll try a new room layout at the October meeting to make better use of the room and time with this portion of the meeting. The Study Group begins at 6:00, regular meeting at 7:00. Tuesday November 28 th features Ron Anderson Ron is planning a demonstration and raffle of this Japanese Black Pine for our November Meeting. Here are a couple pictures to peak your interest. ABAS Wiring Class/Workshop Sunday December 3, 2017 Bob Bugay & Renee Seely will co-host a wiring class & workshop for members, signup sheets will be available at the September Meeting. Here are the class details: Wiring is an essential skill in bonsai It allows us to bend branches and add movement to our trees to train them towards a desired shape. It s a technique that we all strive to master, and what better way to take a step on that journey than to learn from ABAS s own, Bob Bugay and Renée Seely. Bob and Renee will begin class with a lecture and demonstration on: 1. The Wire Types and Usage 2. Wiring Techniques/Tips and Tricks. Students will then get a chance to practice those techniques on cut branches to refine their skills. After students have had ample time to practice, they will use these learned techniques on their own bonsai trees under Bob and Renée s guidance. When: December 3rd, 2017 Where: Renée s home Duration: 9am 1pm. Please arrive a few minutes early. SGAC Fall Sale A BIG thank you to everyone who contributed to and worked the Garden Center Fall Sale to benefit our club. Proceeds from the sale go towards our rent for the center. Here s a picture of the Sunday crew. Again, THANK YOU! Sunday Crew SGAC Sale ABAS Formal Display Did you notice our club has started a new feature at our monthly meetings? Last month Bob Bugay created his version of a formal Bonsai Display for us to see and appreciate. We plan to feature one member creating their own formal display each month for discussion of the nuances that raise the act of showing bonsai to an art form. Next month Ann Hultgren will present a display and lead the bonsai display discussion. Here is a picture of Bob s display last month.
