Seems we have found the finish line of 2016 with Captain Steve Ritter and closed the year with a great Christmas party due to Leslie Ritter I thank both of you for the time, effort and dedication. We now have caught the 2017 Trade Winds. May they be good winds on a steady beam reach and hopefully as the year progresses we will have small boat repairs and plenty of drinks at all ports and some good times with old friends from our club AND may we make new friends who come to visit. After doing some research and in conjunction with knowledgeable competent engineers, scientist and professional advisors and some spying (not by me...others), we have put a process in place to get something done on the website. Towards that end, I have contended for several years that: We are a social club with a boating interest. We have sail boats We have power boats We have slow pontoon boats We have members with NO boats. What we have in common: Most of us have come from far and wide All of us want to get to know some new faces and make friends. So..the board of met and some suggestions of potential social events were put forward. Could I hear back from EVERYONE regarding you and your spouse s interest? If YOU response YES, we will plan an event. 1

Thanks to Commodore Charlie for arranging a great trip to Crystal River to view manatees up close and personal. Last year's attempt was just about a week too late since there was a warming trend that sent most of the manatees out of the springs. But, this year we seemed to be just in time which made entering and exiting the water a bit shocking, but provided us with manatees to view just about everywhere we looked. They are magnificent and gentle creatures that don't seem to be bothered by the large number of human visitors. 2
A relative of elephants, these creatures are usually slow moving although they can sort of sprint up to about 20 mph with the propulsion provided by their massive tails. We must not have been bothering them because the ones we approached just sort of floated around with us not even moving away when we inadvertently bumped into them due to our clumsy efforts at trying to keep our distance. Here's a link to a short underwater video where you can see one of them basically ignoring Charlie's elbow that gets in the way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga8ki-vgxug Seems they spend most of their life eating, resting and traveling we have to wait for retirement for that! Boating in the shallow waters of Kings Bay this time of year is interesting due to shoaling and the presence of the manatees which reportedly number in the hundreds in the winter. Boats must maintain idle speed in the Bay until reaching the channel that runs the length of the river out to the Gulf of Mexico. Although the shallow draft pontoon boats have no strings to pull for propulsion, they are perfect for a great day of manatee viewing. And Captain Greg was a great guide!
