THE SOCIETY OF THORACIC SURGEONS: FIFTY-THIRD ANNUAL MEETING The Society of Thoracic Surgeons 53rd Annual Meeting January 21 25, 2017 George R. Brown Convention Center Houston, Texas The 53rd Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas, January 21 25, 2017, with STS/American Association for Thoracic (AATS) Tech-Con 2017 scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 2017. The Annual Meeting is open to all physicians, residents, fellows, research scientists, perfusionists, physician assistants, nurses, and others interested in cardiothoracic surgery. s and nonmembers are both strongly urged to register in advance. Meeting attendees will be provided with the latest scientific information and technological advances in the field. s of the STS Workforce on Annual Meeting, along with STS President Joseph E. Bavaria, MD, have designed an innovative, contemporary, and interactive 2017 meeting in an effort to improve the educational experience for all attendees. All attendees will receive Annual Meeting Online as part of their registration. In addition, STS/AATS Tech- Con 2017, which offers insight on the latest technological advances within cardiothoracic surgery, will focus on new devices and procedures that are not yet approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. A complete list of session titles is included at the end of this article. On the morning of Sunday, January 22, the STS 53rd Annual Meeting will feature the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Symposium, the Practice Management Summit, the STS/AATS Critical Care Symposium, the STS/Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists Session: Integrating Perioperative Echocardiography Into Cardiac Surgical Clinical Decision Making, and the How To Video Session: Technical Tricks and Pitfalls to Simplify Cardiac Procedures. Sunday afternoon courses include the Residents Symposium, Resuscitation of Patients Who Arrest After Cardiac, the annual General Thoracic and Congenital Surgical Symposia, and Multidisciplinary Response to Emergencies: Strategies for Team s. The STS Annual Meeting Scientific Sessions will begin on Monday, January 23, with the J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers, the meeting s highest-rated papers, followed by the Richard E. Clark Memorial Papers, the best abstracts using data from the STS National Database, and the much-anticipated Presidential Address from Dr Bavaria. After those presentations, the meeting will include a wide variety of disease-specific sessions. In addition to abstracts presenting cutting-edge research findings, these sessions will include pro/con debates, lectures, and invited talks from world-renowned speakers, including a brand-new Key Contact session that will explain how STS members can become more involved in government advocacy. The & Wine event on Monday afternoon will give attendees the opportunity to view the 2017 posters in the company of their colleagues and the poster authors. The scientific posters will be displayed throughout the meeting, and attendees will be encouraged to view the posters during session breaks to learn about the innovative research being performed in the field. Posters will cover all cardiothoracic surgery subspecialties. The Business Meeting for STS s will be held from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM Monday evening; all STS members are encouraged to attend. Tuesday, January 24, will kick off with Early Riser Sessions, followed by the Thomas B. Ferguson lecture by Ralph W. Muller, MA, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Later that day, the Patient Safety Symposium will explore the important topic of physician burnout and present strategies on how to combat this problem, and the new Electronic Learning and Innovation in Education session will teach participants how to use the many features of the Society s new Learning Management System. Concluding the Annual Meeting on Wednesday, January 25, is STS University, which offers attendees the opportunity for hands-on practice using synthetic and tissue-based simulation models. The STS University courses will be held 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and repeated 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. The 2017 hands-on courses include Essentials of TAVR, TEVAR and Aortic Arch Debranching Procedures, Mitral Valve Repair, Valve-Sparing Aortic Root Replacement, Aortic Root Enlarging Procedures and Aortic Valve Leaflet Reconstruction, VATS Lobectomy, Advanced Open Esophageal and Tracheal Procedures, Chest Wall Resection and Adult Pectus, Atrial Fibrillation (Maze Procedure), and Mechanical Circulatory Support. Advance registration is encouraged for STS University courses. These hands-on sessions will have limited workstation accommodations. Manuscripts must be submitted online at www.editorialmanager.com/annals. Editorial staff will be on hand at the meeting to assist those submitting papers if they need help. Manuscripts will not be considered for publication if submitted after Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 11:59 PM CST. All papers become the property of the Society. Publication of all manuscripts in The Annals of Thoracic is not assured. If manuscripts are not submitted to The Annals before or at the time of the STS Annual Meeting, a 2-year period of ineligibility for participation in the STS Annual Meeting will be imposed on all authors of the paper. The same 2-year sanction applies to all manuscripts returned to authors for revisions that are not resubmitted within 1 calendar year of the request for the revision. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the STS Board of Directors or Executive Committee may waive the requirement that authors of an abstract accepted for presentation at the STS Annual Meeting submit a corresponding manuscript to The Annals of Thoracic for publication consideration in unusual circumstances. Requests for such waivers must be submitted in writing to the STS Secretary and may be granted subject to certain terms and conditions. In all such circumstances, manuscripts derived from STS Annual Meeting presentations may not be published before presentation of the material at the Annual Meeting.
