Each session will last approximately 30 minutes. Evaluation of Pathological Heart Specimens Amy Juraszek, M.D., and all faculty During this session, learners will examine anatomic specimens with a variety of cardiac defects. Dr. Juraszek will facilitate discussions on the pathology of each. Hands-On Practicum: Live Scanning of Real Patient Using Pediatric Protocol (subject to volunteer availability) During this session, learners will observe up-close the performance of pediatric echocardiograms with real child volunteers. There will be demonstration of pediatric protocols and views by faculty sonographers, as well as time for hands-on scanning. 5 General Information Course Description This activity is designed to familiarize sonographers and cardiology trainees with common forms of congenital heart disease in children and how to scan them. The course consists of a series of lectures covering the most common forms of congenital heart disease as well as several break-out sessions. During break-out sessions, learners will have the opportunity to individually examine anatomic specimens with a variety of cardiac defects. In addition, actual subjects will be available for small group scanning and detailed discussion of specialized imaging techniques. Finally, some rare cases that have been cared for at will be reviewed. Who Should Attend This course may not be applicable for the advanced clinician who is interested in the latest, cutting-edge research. The course is focused on the learner who is new to congenital heart disease or who is out of practice in taking care of the congenital heart patient. Objectives At the completion of this conference, the participant should be better able to: Describe the segmental approach of echocardiography in diagnosis of common congenital heart diseases Identify common forms of congenital heart disease by echocardiography Recall physiological manifestations and consequences of congenital heart disease Recognize various surgical approaches to common congenital heart diseases Correlate pathological findings with their appearance by echocardiography.
