Convention Atlanta Happy (Rotary) New Year It wasn t quite fireworks and champers, but members and partners donned their black ties and frocks on Tuesday evening for our Club s 72nd Changeover Dinner. We were delighted to welcome many of our Club's Honorary members, partners, guests and our resident soon-to-be PDG Michael and Roz. Our honoured guests included Sandra and Sam Doumany and Danielle Stanisic from our Satellite Club. It was indeed an honour for me to be inducted as your Club s 72nd President and to welcome aboard your new Board. My goal this year is to continue working with you to make our Club a relevant, vibrant one and to increase our public profile and presence in our community. So, in a couple of days we ll be off and running in the 2017-18 Rotary year. We all have lots of work to do, carousel rosters to volunteer for, projects to develop/maintain and friendships to be enjoyed. 1 That s what being a Southport Rotarian all about. SCRIBES REPORT JUNE 27, 2017 Chair and Opening: Chair Peter Overell opened the meeting with the Four Way Test followed by the toast to the Queen and Australia. He invited President Graham to welcome everyone. President Graham welcomed all 40 to the meeting making mention of DG Michael and Roz, PDG Sandra and Sam Doumany, our 2 Honorary members, Gail and Susan, Michael Farrow, Diana Todd- Banks, Danielle Stanisic from the Satellite Club, partners and members. President Graham thanked Lynne Connelly for the beautiful floral table arrangements. He said that 9 members and partners attended the District Changeover last Sunday. He also thanked Sue Dux for preparing the Annual Report which has been distributed to all tables. Chair Peter invited PP and AG Lea Rickwood to propose the toast to Rotary International in which she said how Rotary tackled so many of the issues facing our world and with 1.2 million members, Rotary is making a real difference. Chair Peter then invited DG Michael to respond. In that Michael mentioned the Rotary Foundation which had given $US 3b to humanitarian programmes. Dear to his heart is the Polio Plus Eradication programme which is nearing the end as numbers have reduced from 350,000 per year when Rotary became involved to only 6 so far this year. DG Michael then expressed his and Roz s thanks to Southport for their great support throughout the year. Following dinner, Chair Peter invited Jim Scotte to propose the Toast to the Rotaranns. Jim talked about the great support that the Rotaryanns have given to Southport Rotary since they began in 1956. They assisted Roz with her Days for Girls project and helped with the District Conference. 2
Christine Cooper responded on behalf of the Rotaryanns and said how the group really shared and cared for each other and Southport Rotary club members. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Following dessert, Tony Gardner led Heads and Tails and drew the 2 raffles, one for the club and the other for the 6 floral arrangements. Raffle Winner was Susan and Heads and Tails Winner: Sam Doumany Chair Peter invited DG Michael forward and he presented the District Citation Award to Southport Rotary, received by President Graham. Roz also presented a certificate to President Graham for Southport Rotary s support of her partner project the Fred Hollows Foundation which had riased $25,000 from the District- a marvellous response. President Graham and Greg Dux presented attendance awards to several members- Tony G, Graham and Marion J, Peter O, Lionel Perry, Merv P, Hugh S, Allan T, Michael I, Graham C and Rhonda W. President Graham then gave his farewell address in which he said how proud he was to be a Rotarian as we all are. He proposed a toast to Southport Rotary. He congratulated Graham and Marion Jones on receiving the Brian and Nancy Knowles Award for service to District 9640. He mentioned it had been a busy year with the celebration of the 100 th Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation which has shown such good stewardship for 112 years. He said how DG Michael had had good local and relevant Projects with the organ donation, the successful Charleville trips as well as Roz s project. He mentioned that he had gone to Murgon with a Fred Hollows Project. President Graham presented a bouquet of flowers to Sue Dux for her work on our Annual Report. Then, he called President Elect Rhonda Whitton forward to receive the chain of office, her President s pin and dinner badge. Rhonda announced her goals for the year were to continue the great work that Southport Rotary has done over its 72 years, to make Southport Rotary a strong and vibrant club with a greater presence in the community and to increase our public image in the community. President Rhonda then presented Immediate Past President Graham with his PP pin and dinner badge. President Rhonda introduced her Board- Secretary Marion J, Executive Secretary Graham J, Treasurer Merv P, Rotary Foundation Graham C, Membership and PR Lea R, International Projects Tony P, Community Services Leanda C and Youth Andrew M. Club Admin is Bill C for July and Marion and Rhonda Aug thru December with PDG Michael taking over in January. President Rhonda thanked Roz I for looking after Rotaryanns for the coming year. With that, President Rhonda thanked everyone for coming and closed the meeting at 9.10 pm Marion J NB.
