1 CLUB BULLETIN SI POOLE MAY 2017 Our next meeting will be on Monday 8th May at Salterns Hotel at 7.30pm. FROM PRESIDENT LIZ Speaker: Sally Harvey AOK Rucksack Appeal From their WEBSITE We open doors to the Homeless. We are a unique charity in that we work with the major homeless agencies in getting homeless people OFF the streets, into accommodation, and back into community using a philosophy based on Maslow s hierarchy of needs. As usual supper in the bar from 6.15pm see you there! - and bring any guests you like! MEMBERSHIP NEWS There isn t much news to report this month. However it is great to see some of our more recent members becoming more involved, either in Exec positions in the case of Ana or taking and interest in our future publicity- like Julie! At our AGM, we were delighted to welcome Ana onto the Executive Committee as Programme Action Officer to replace Sue Fortescue who is taking a leave of absence from the club this year. As a committee we are looking forward to supporting Ana as she feels her way into this role and we know that all of SI Poole members will Quiz continue to support our worthwhile actions this year. Marian has agreed to be our SI Kathmandu friendship link officer. Thank you to both of these ladies and to all Exec members and those who have for many years been doing all the other individual and vital jobs which keep SI Poole thriving! 2 Gardening at the Rape Crisis Centre SI Poole were again invited to join SI Bournemouth to work on the garden at the Rape Crisis Centre at the Lansdowne. Book group In April the group met to discuss Jackie s book choice, Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson. Discussion was helped by a delicious slice of fruit cake from Betty s, (not of Harrogate, but York!) and some Easter cup cakes provided by Jackie. The person who chooses the book, brings the cakes. The garden is an enclosed courtyard in the centre of the building with some benches and small tables where people who have come to the centre for assistance after rape have the opportunity to be alone in a safe and tranquil environment. Members from SI Bournemouth and Poole have been nurturing this small piece of ground for a few years now. When the volunteers first took on the project the area was wild and full of weeds and not a place that anyone would want to go to. With inspiration and lots of effort over the last few years this little patch has been transformed. There are beds, for shrubs and small flowers, around the perimeter and a central flower bed with a cherry tree. This year, for the first time, the tree has flowered and as you will see the garden is full of colour and a joy to behold. May we wish the people who visit it have a little peace there on their path to recovery. Alison As usual, opinion within the group was divided. Some considered Bryson s observations of the British to be astute and funny, but sometimes relentlessly so, his appetite for stand-up comic one-liners rather exhausting and somewhat dated. We meet again at my home on Thursday 25 th May at 2.30pm when we will be discussing, Girl Unknown by Karen Perry. The novel for our session on Tuesday 4 th July at 2.00pm, will be Sue s choice, Excellent Women by Barbara Pym. Marion

4 News of Sue s other work and a link with SI Thames Valley Creating a world without language barriers was the theme when members of Slough, Windsor and Eton International Soroptimists met for their annual lunch at Dorney Lake. Guest speaker was Sue Fortescue, the volunteer manager with Translators Without Borders - a charity whose aim is to create a world where there are no language barriers. At that event Sue also gave a number of knitted items to SI Thames Valley for their project in Kori, Sierra Leone.
