Is childminding the right job for me? If you would like to have a rewarding career, be your own boss and run your business from your own home, then childminding could be an ideal career for you. As a registered childminder you would: offer the children you care for a secure and stimulating environment provide early years education and watch the children develop be self-employed, working in your home, choosing the hours you work and the services you provide care for your own children at the same time, if you have a family have a career where no two days are the same meet other childminders in your area and get to know your local community join over 60,000 childminders in England and Wales providing quality childcare. As a registered childminder you can look after one or more children under the age of 8 for more than two hours a day, in your own home, for payment. Childminders deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) a play-based framework for children up to the age of five that enables you to meet a child s individual development needs. They are inspected against the requirements of the EYFS by Ofsted. Although every day is different, a typical day might include: visiting a park, local shops, library or children s centre arranging fun and stimulating play/learning activities, observing each child s development and planning future activities providing meals and snacks for the children taking children to and from school, pre-school or clubs working with other local childminders to organise group activities. One of the most rewarding things about caring for children is watching their excitement as they learn something new, or achieve something for the very first time. Childminding is a dynamic and evolving career, and there are plenty of courses and training opportunities that will help you develop your knowledge and confidence. Once you have started childminding, there are many training courses available, right through to degree-level qualifications. If you are ready to take on the challenge of the commitment and demands of looking after other people s children, childminding is the right choice for you! You would need to request this on the application form EYC for registration as a childminder. Please contact Ofsted 0300 123 1231 for more information. 2

Childminding Registration Course (CRC) This 3 day classroom based course run by Trio and Oxfordshire County Council is to help you prepare for your new work as a childminder by: showing you how to assess the home-based setting for risks, and make it a safe and healthy environment for children introducing you to the Early Years Foundation Stage, teaching you to plan how you will work with children, including planning routines and activities, helping them settle into your care and managing their behaviour helping you make a good start in your relationships with parents and primary carers making you aware of your responsibility, as a practitioner, in taking action if you suspect children may be suffering abuse or neglect teaching you how to set up your childcare service, and ensuring you know how to meet any legal requirements. After you have attended all the 'taught' sessions, you will need to complete and submit some coursework on line. The time is taken to do the coursework will vary from person to person, but is likely to be around 15-22 hours (these hours are in addition to the taught sessions). You will be given a deadline of around 6-10 weeks to submit your coursework. After the first taught session, there is an expectation of self-study, research and preparation of policies etc. to ensure that you are ready to start offering high quality childcare as a registered childminder. What do I have to pay for the CRC? You pay the 141 fee when you book your place. If I am unable to attend the classroom based CRC course, can I access the training online? The course is typically split into 3 classroom based days which involves research and course work throughout. Days 1&2 classroom based sessions can be taken as the online home self-study. This option is more expensive at 165 (inc VAT). Candidates must be confident in using the internet as online technical support is not provided as part of the course. Day 3 is a compulsory classroom based session, no online alternative is available. (Please be aware places on day 3 are limited) For more information call Trio on 01793 608833 as this option is not available to book on the website. It is the recommendation of Oxfordshire County to book onto all 3 classroom based sessions as you will gain increased support from a tutor and it is an opportunity for you to exchange ideas and build friendships with other new childminders who will be starting their business at the same time as you. Where does the CRC fit in the process of becoming a childminder? The Ofsted application form says 'Please provide the dates of the local authority approved training course or give the dates when you intend to commence this training if you have not managed to complete the course before submitting the application. Please note, we will not accept your application unless you have completed or are booked on to a training course. You must have completed this training before we can register you'. Ofsted also says you should not apply (for registration) unless you believe you can meet the requirements of the EYFS. If the inspector decides you are not able to meet the requirements, you will be asked to withdraw your application. The CRC will help you to understand the EYFS. 6

You will have your Registration Visit when all the checks on you and others associated with your application are complete. This is normally about 7 weeks after Ofsted has received all the necessary information, you have submitted a CRB disclosure application for every person named in your application, and have paid the Ofsted application fee. I am under the age of 18. Please contact Trio Childcare Connections for advice. I live just outside Oxfordshire - can I attend one of these courses? Possibly if there is a place available. Please discuss with Trio Childcare Connections. How do I get on a course? Trio Childcare Connections (01793 608833) runs this course, and details of courses and on an online booking system are on their website, are on their website, www.triochildcare.co.uk. Before you book on to a CRC, please be sure you definitely want to register as a childminder, can afford the costs involved, and have attended a pre-registration briefing session. I want to join the voluntary part of the Ofsted Childcare Register (but not register as a childminder, I would like to be a home childcarer/nanny). Can I attend this course? No this is not an appropriate course, please contact Oxfordshire Family Information Service for more information (0845 226 2636) Community Childcare and Play, 01865 816667, 01/03/ 7
