Large Animal Nutrition- 3.0 credits ANSCI 440 Spring 2013 Syllabus MW 6:00-9:00PM Agriculture Science and Industries Building 014 Instructor: Wade Pearson Associate Professor- Animal Science 009 Ferguson Building Phone: (814)555-5555 Email: pwa104@psu.edu Office hours by appointment only, please call or email Description: Large Animal Nutrition focuses on proper nutrition, balancing of rations, diseases associated with improper diets, and the digestive processes of cattle (dairy and beef), sheep, swine, and horses. In the duration of this course, we will focus on fundamental aspects of nutrition through feeds and feeding of the species listed above. Computer skills will be needed to complete the ration balancing portion because we will be using computer ration balancing programs. This is considered an advances animal nutrition class, and you must complete the prerequisites listed below in order to be enrolled in this class: Animal Science (ANSCI) 201 Chemistry (CHEM) 202 Objectives: Each enrollee will be able to: Identify feed stuffs fed and related to each species covered Follow digestion of feedstuffs through digestive tracts of ruminants, mongastrics, and hindgut fermentors Balance rations through long-hand and computer software Identify and explain diet related diseases in large animals Select feed stuffs and ingredients that can go into a species ration

Course Policies: Attendance is required. Maximum of four classes over the semester can be missed. o Absences will be excused if note is shown from your personal doctor or from the campus health center Late assignments will result in ten point deduction for every day late after the assignment is due Missed course work may be made up if instructor is notified before the end of the day of the class that you miss All graded material will be returned to students (Quizzes and tests change from year to year, so it does not matter who you give your old quizzes/tests to, the information will be different for each year) No cell phone, facebooking, twitter, etc. during class! This is considered rude, and will result in a 10 point deduction or removal from class is caught doing so. Required text/materials: Cheeke, Peter R., 2004. Applied Animal Nutrition, 3rd Edition. Cheating and plagiarizing are not permitted. Those who are caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive a zero for the assignment and will be subject to removal from the class.
