FUNDAMENTALS OF PALLIATIVE CARE (Endorsed by Hospice NZ) Fundamentals of Palliative Care This is a comprehensive palliative care programme of 9 individual sessions which are relevant to all people working in health care settings aged residential care, home care and hospital settings. It is comprised of: Session 1 - Essence of palliative care Session 2 - Ethical issues in palliative care Session 3 - Pain and symptom management Session 4 - Palliative care for people with chronic illness Session 5 - Palliative care for people with dementia Session 6 - Communication skills Session 7 - Last days of life Session 8 - Loss and grief Session 9 - Caring for ourselves It is strongly recommended that participants first complete Session 1 - Essence of palliative care, as this sets the scene for the remaining sessions. We will be running individual sessions twice in the following areas during 2014: Palmerston North (Page 4), Levin (Page 5) and Woodville (Page 6). Please note that for each of the 9 sessions you will be required to do some prereading. Following the session you also need to complete a post learning activity. The final requirement will be a post learning feedback form. This form needs to be returned to. A certificate for each session will be provided only after completion of the above requirements. SYRINGE DRIVER (Courses endorsed by Hospice NZ) Syringe Driver Full Competency The aim of this workshop is to support Registered Nurses working in aged residential care who may need to manage a syringe driver. This course will provide competency in both the syringe driver and medication management. SPECIAL THEMED WORKSHOPS Progressive neurological conditions in the older adult Workshop (Open to all health care workers) This workshop will provide an overview of the aging process and specific neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinsons, Dementia and Motor Neurone Disease. This study day is run in conjunction with ElderHealth. Various guest speakers. Thursday15 th May Time: 9.00 am 4.00 pm Cost: $40.00 Chronic Conditions Workshop (Suitable for any Registered Staff (RN/EN/Medical/Allied) providing care in a range of health settings) This workshop will provide an overview of the symptoms and needs of people with life limiting conditions (Cardiac, Renal and Respiratory). ALLIED HEALTH Grief, Loss and Bereavement (For health professionals working with people experiencing issues with grief and loss) The aim of this seminar is to provide an opportunity to explore the impact that grief, loss and bereavement has at all stages of our lives. It is not a therapeutic session but rather one that hopefully will bring awareness of the complexity and dynamics of the grief journey. Thursday 26 th June Time: 1.00 4.00 pm Cost: $30 Facilitator: Kate McKenzie, Palliative Care Social Worker, Understand me when I m dying Exploring spiritual and cultural diversity in Aotearoa The purpose of this workshop is to raise awareness and understanding of the increasing spiritual and cultural diversity that exists within our community. Representatives from several faith traditions will share their perspective and how this impacts on care of the dying. PALLIATIVE CARE PARTNERSHIP These sessions are run as part of the Palliative Care Partnership (PCP) programme in conjunction with Central PHO. PCP Full Training Tuesday 6 th, 13 th and 20 th May Time: 7.00 9.00 pm PCP Update Members of the Partnership Programme are contractually obliged to attend one update palliative care session per year. Alternatively, to fulfil your update requirements, you can attend any palliative care education session provided by or a Genesis Breakfast Session* (held first Thursday of each month at Arohanui Hospice).
