certificate in CBT skills certificate in CBT skills Course Leader Gerry McCarron Venue Limited Fees Course fee: 1,350 Registration fee: 100 More information Tamica Neufville Programme Administrator tamica.neufville@ 020 7378 2050 The CBT Skills course is an entry level training in the foundation theory and skills of Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT). This course is suitable for students in clinical settings new to the field as well as existing therapists, psychologists, counsellors or coaches who wish to add CBT methods to their professional toolkit. Who is it for? This course is for mental health professionals who are working clinically. You may be a social worker, doctor, nurse, counsellor, psychotherapist or psychologist trained in another modality, for example. There is an expectation that participants are already proficient in the generic transtheoretical therapeutic competencies. As an entry requirement, you will be able to demonstrate proficiency in relationship skills from prior training and clinical experience. Qualified counsellors and psychotherapists successfully completing this course may be eligible for a clinical placement in the CBT Service. Please see Entry Requirements below. About Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy CBT is a form of psychological therapy that stresses the role of conscious psychological processes in the maintenance of emotional disorder especially the interaction between negative thoughts, moods and coping behaviours. While most people report experiencing negative thoughts and feelings of low mood and anxiety these are typically transient experiences. In emotional disorder the interaction of negative thoughts and maladaptive coping responses interferes to cause a perpetuation and deepening of disordered cognition and emotion. In addition, many coping strategies cause their own additional problems. CBT aims to break these cycles of maintenance in therapy by increasing the client s self-awareness and teaching a new and more adaptive repertoire of responses to old triggers like negative automatic thoughts. CBT protocols are frequently recommended in the NICE guidelines as the first-line treatment for common mental health problems. The Training Our training is highly interactive and experiential and trainees will get the opportunity to learn CBT from the inside through extensive roleplay and the application of the principles in their own lives between training sessions. Skills will be demonstrated live by the trainer and using in video demonstrations. The course closely follows the Department of Health CBT Competencies Framework that describes the various activities which need to be brought together to carry out CBT effectively and in line with best practice for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. This course covers basic CBT competencies, specific
certificate in CBT skills behavioural and cognitive therapy techniques and some problemspecific competencies. This course is suitable for either qualified therapists or other professionals who wish to add basic CBT techniques to their skill-set, or those who already have a good academic understanding of the CBT model but are unsure/lack confidence in how to translate their intellectual understanding of the model into providing CBT with their client. The course consists of seminars and case discussions, practical examples, practice of interventions, role play and video demonstrations. It is intended to provide students with a firm grounding in the CBT model, rationale for interventions, and application of behaviour and cognitive change methods; to introduce CBT terminology and methods (e.g. Socratic questioning). There are no examined assessments, case studies or process reports. The focus will be on the practical application of CBT skills to everyday practice. The general principle is to provide a mix of formal teaching, practical application of interventions, and discussion of casework. Participants are invited to bring their own, and, client material. Students need to be willing to participate in exercises using the taught interventions both in client and practitioner role; and to put into practice some of the material taught between sessions. Willingness to engage in the practical experience of a basic range of CBT interventions is essential. CBT is a psychoeducation, as such the teaching will, where possible, aim to model the CBT model. At the end of the course the student will have been introduced to the 5 Areas model of CBT; provided with experience of basic techniques that facilitate change, and understand their rationale. They will have been introduced to the CBT representation of the person; Cognitive Conceptualisation, Case Formulation, Treatment Plan and Aim for Therapy. The CBT concepts of Depression and Anxiety/Anxiety Disorders will have been described along with disorder specific interventions and treatment protocols. Each student will be provided with a induction folder containing the basic interventions taught. At every session there will be further hand-outs and reading material.
