Question No.23 :Paragraph based questions (1 x 2 =2 marks) 2. Question No.24 : Value based questions (1 x 2 = 2 marks) 3. Question No.25 :Higher order thinking skills questions (1 x 2 = 2 marks) (ix) An additional 15 minutes time has been allotted to read this question paper only. During this interval you are not allowed to write anything in the answer book. SECTION A 1. Define Autotrophic mode of nutrition. (1) 2. Explain the process of any one of the following: Alloying or Galvanisation. (1) 3. Define: An Element or A Compound (1) 4. Cuscuta is a parasitic plant. Why is it so? How is it different from a partial parasite? (2) 5. How do lichens show Symbiosis? (2) 6. Given below are the steps involved in nutrition in animals. Rearrange them in the correct order. Assimilation, Digestion, Ingestion, Absorption, Egestion (2) Page 1 of 4

7. Name the parts of the digestive system that perform the following functions: (2) D A C B A. Bile is produced here which helps to digest fats B. Absorbs water and necessary salts from the undigested food C. Villi present here absorb digested, soluble food D. Gland that produces Amylase to partially digest starch 8. Answer these questions with reference to digestion in ruminants: (3) a) Name the chambers present in stomach of ruminants. b) In which chamber does the digestion of cellulose take place? c) How is cellulose digested? 9. Observe the types of thermometers shown below: a) Identify the types. (1) b) What is referred to as the Upper Fixed point and the Lower Fixed Point in a thermometer? (1) c) Convert 87 0 F to 0 C (1) 10. Complete the following sentences to show how a thermos flask works: (3) The flask is made in such a way that heat is not lost or gained by (a) -------------------------, Convection or (b) ----------------------- It has a double wall made up of glass which is a (c) ----------- conductor of heat. When the mouth of the flask is closed, warm air cannot (d) --------- thus (e) --------------currents cannot start. Any radiant heat that enters or leaves the flask will be (f) ------------------ because of the shiny walls. Page 2 of 4

11.a) State any one condition that is necessary for conduction of heat. (1) b)coffee pot (i) and (ii) shown in the diagram was full of hot coffee. It was easier to hold coffee pot (ii) than (i) Explain why in both cases. (2) 12. a) Give the difference between Atomicity and valency (1) b) Symbols of some elements and radicals are given below. Name them and give their valency: Al, OH, Na, CO 3. (2) 13. a)write the chemical formulae of the following compounds: i)copper chloride ii) Calcium oxide (1) b) Differentiate between a Physical change and a Chemical change. (2) 14. Give reasons: (3) a) Brinjals and potatoes are soaked in water when cut. b) Burning is an Exothermic reaction. c) Copper sulphate + Iron Iron sulphate + Copper 15. a) State the two steps involved in the process of respiration. (1) b) Draw a neat diagram of the human respiratory system and label these parts: (2) i) Alveoli ii) Trachea iii) Bronchi iv) Bronchioles 16. a) John blew into a test-tube containing a clear liquid. The liquid changed colour. (1) What was the change in colour? Explain why it happened. b) Give a chemical equation to show Anaerobic respiration. (1) c) Name the organism that breathes through: i) Spiracles ii) Moist skin iii) Gills iv) Stomata (2) d) Explain any one of the following statements: (1) i) Farmers turn the soil to make it loose. ii) Birds have air filled sacs near the lungs. 17.a) Define: Periodic Motion (1) b) Find the Time period of a pendulum which takes 60 seconds for 30 oscillations. Exhaled air a) has more carbon dioxide b) is saturated with water vapour c) is warm d) has all of these SECTION C 23. Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: (2) A group of students in Oman have started a new business that promotes a local, eco friendly agriculture practices by using date palm leaves as an alternative for soil. They gather the leaves, wash and sterlise them to get rid of any bacteria or insects and shred them finely into very small pieces and use it as soil to grow plants. The soil made from date palm leaves contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and sodium, which plants need to grow. Plants that grow in this alternative for soil need not be treated with pesticides as it does not attract insects. It also uses a lot less water. Plants have to be just sprayed with water, thereby reducing wastage of water in an arid country like Oman. a) How is the alternative for soil made? b) Write any two points to show that using this soil is beneficial. 24. Scarcity of water is a major concern in the world today. Suggest any two ways by which this precious water can be conserved. (2) 25. a) A vessel containing boiling water was covered with a lid. After sometime it was seen that the inner surface of the lid was covered with drops of water. How did this happen? (1) b) The Water Table seems to rise sometimes. Give a reason. (1) Page 4 of 4
