1. DESCRIPTION The COBALT is a mtr driven lw vltage electric lck designed t secure cmmercial and residential swing thrugh drs. It is supplied with a matching strike plate and can be surface munted with the aid f available accessries, r installed int a mrtise fr a cncealed slutin. The lck has been designed t address the tw biggest issues in cncealed electric lcking tday; 1. The ability t pull a dr int alignment even if the dr has nt clsed in a central psitin. 2. The ability t release when requested even if there is excessive lad n the dr. The design f the COBALT is unique as it has tw mtrs which independently perate tw lcking pins. These dual blt pins ffer extra strength but mre imprtantly ensure the dr can be secured even when the dr has nt clsed in the crrect psitin. This is achieved by the lck sensing which directin the dr is clsing frm and activating the apprpriate blt pin t grab the dr and pull it int alignment befre the ther blt pin activates. A dr that is 8mm ff alignment in either directin (16mm ttal windw) will be secured with the COBALT. With the dr secured and lcked the COBALT can be given an unlck signal and it will instantly unlck. If the dr is laded (pre-lad) when the unlck signal is given the COBALT will still unlck, even with lads in excess f 100Kg n the dr. Critically the ability f the COBALT t instantly release with excessive pre-lad n the dr even ccurs in the event f a pwer failure if the lck is cnfigured as fail safe. PRODUCT UNBOXED Alng with the COBALT and matching strike there are als 10G Self Tapping and M5 Machine Screws supplied. Fur fitting tabs are als enclsed and can be used in cnjunctin with the M5 screws fr recessing the lck r strike plate t metal drs and frames. The 7 way wire lm supplied is used t ease installatin as the wiring can be dne withut the lck being installed until the very end. 4. PRE - INSTALLATION ASSESMENT 4.1 Mechanical The first decisin regarding installatin is whether the COBALT will be mrtised r surface munted t the dr / dr frame. Mrtise installatin ensures a discrete slutin as the lck and strike plate can be embedded int the dr and frame, hwever in sme instances this is nt pssible. Glass drs fr example require surface munting which is dne with the aid f the YD30 husing. Whichever methd is chsen it is imprtant that the lck and strike plate are aligned crrectly. The strike plate has tw penings t accept the dual blt pins and centring these penings with the blt pins will ensure crrect peratin. The COBALT can be installed vertically r hrizntally but is nt designed t be munted in a flr cavity firing upwards r in a wet envirnment. 4.2 Electrical The first cnsideratin is t establish where t run the wires and decide n what feedback is required frm the lck. There are a ttal f seven available cnnectins; three are cmpulsry pwer cnnectins whilst the remaining fur prvide ptinal dr and blt psitin feedback. These ptinal cnnectins can be integrated int access cntrl r alarm systems t prvide full mnitring. The crrect gauge f wire needs t be chsen as vltage drp acrss the pwer wires (+ and -) can limit the lcks peratin. Fr all the remaining cnnectins, a lwer gauge wire can be used as these are nly signal wires. INSTALLATION Tw installatin examples are detailed n the fllwing pages; mrtise and surface, hwever any cmbinatin f the tw can be achieved. Whichever installatin methd is chsen it is vital t ensure that the lck face plate and the strike plate align crrectly and the gap between the lck face plate and strike plate des nt exceed 8mm when the dr is clsed. 5.1 Mrtise Installatin A typical mrtise installatin is described n the flwing page, with the lck fitted int the dr frame and the strike plate secured int the dr. It is pssible t install the lck int the dr and the strike plate int the frame hwever with this methd running wiring t the lck requires additinal wrk. BQT Slutins (SEA) Pte Limited Page 4
5.1.1 Cutting the mrtises Referring t the dimensin drawings in Sectin 3; mrtises are cut int the dr and dr frame suitable t fit the strike plate and lck. Wden drs and frames require full mrtises where metal drs and frames, being hllw, ften nly require a single rectangle cut-ut t accmmdate the lck face plate r strike plate. Fr these installatins the supplied fitting tabs can be used t secure the lck and strike plate in place. Cut-ut in a wden dr frame t accmmdate the lck. The mrtise behind the lck bdy needs t have enugh space t accmmdate the wire cnnectins. Cut-ut in a metal dr t accmmdate the strike plate. 5.1.2 Wiring the lck Wires are run frm the pwer supply t the lck. A hle needs t be drilled in the back f the mrtise t bring the wires ut and a cnnectin can be made t the supplied wire lm which in turn plugs int the lck. The jumper needs t be psitined fr fail safe / fail secure cnfiguratin as per the instructins n the lck cver. The Red, Black and Blue wires are essential cnnectins whilst the Vilet and White are ptinal. Detailed wiring instructins can be fund in Sectin 6. 5.1.3 Fitting the lck and strike plate The lck is slid back int the mrtise, making sure that the wiring integrity is maintained and secure in place with the supplied 10G self tapping screws. Strike plate installed in the dr using the fitting tabs. Befre the strike plate is installed the fitting tabs are secured in behind the cut-ut using the supplied M5 machine screws. The strike plate is then placed int the cut ut and the remaining M5 screws are used t secure it. Lck secured directly int the dr frame. BQT Slutins (SEA) Pte Limited Page 5
5.1.4 Checking the peratin With the lck and strike installed and wiring cmplete the dr is clsed t check the alignment and peratin. The key area fr alignment is the blt pins; the pins are designed t tuch the leading edge f the strike plate hle t pull the dr in, but they cannt be allwed t tuch the sides f the hle as this will limit their unlcking ability. If they rub r tuch the side f the strike plate hle, either the lck r strike plate needs t be re-psitined. Clearance Blt pin Clearance The blt pin tuches the leading edge f the strike plate hle but there needs t be clearance arund the sides f the hle. 5.2 Surface Installatin By using a YD30 husing, the lck and r strike plate can be surface munted t the dr r dr frame eliminating the need fr cutting mrtises. Husings are available with adhesive tape supplied fr easy applicatin t glass drs in additin t having screw hle munting pints fr wd and metal drs. 5.2.1 Securing the lck husing t wd Befre fitting the husing, determine exactly where the wiring will enter the husing and drill ne r tw 8mm hles thrugh the husing wall. Ensure the hles are n the husing face that ges against the wden frame. Push the supplied grmmet(s) int the drilled hle(s). The tw 10G Hex head self-tapping screws supplied with the husing can then be screwed int the wd but nt tightened. The tw keyhle shaped cut uts in the husing fit ver these screw heads which are tightened with a ring spanner nce the husing is in place. 5.2.2 Wiring the lck Wires are run frm the pwer supply t the lck thrugh the drilled hle(s) in the husing. A cnnectin can be made t the supplied wire lm which in turn plugs int the lck. The jumper needs t be psitined fr fail safe / fail secure cnfiguratin as per the instructins n the lck cver. 5.2.3 Fitting the lck int the husing Once wired, the lck is slid int the husing and secured in place with the supplied M5 machine screws. Make sure that the wiring integrity is maintained as the lck is screwed in place. 5.2.4 Fitting the strike plate husing t glass Fr simple applicatin t glass the YD30 husing is supplied with self-adhesive tape. With the backing remved the husing can be applied directly t the glass. A flat stainless steel dress plate is fitted n the ppsite side f the glass t give a clean finish. The prtective cating n the dress plate can be remved nce it is in place. 5.2.5 Fitting the strike plate int the husing The strike plate is placed int the husing and secured in place with the supplied M5 machine screws. 5.2.6 Checking the peratin With the lck and strike installed and wiring cmplete the dr is clsed t check the alignment and peratin. The key area fr alignment is the blt pins; the pins are designed t tuch the leading edge f the strike plate hle t pull the dr in, but they cannt be allwed t tuch the sides f the hle as this will limit the unlcking ability. 6. WIRING The COBALT is supplied with a 7-way wire lm that plugs directly int the lck. The wires are clur cded with three being essential cnnectins and fur ptinal. Cntrl f the lck is achieved by using the three pwer wires, whilst dr and blt psitin mnitring are available when desired. Cnnect the COBALT as per the chart: RED POS Psitive cnnectin t DC pwer supply (12 24V) BLACK NEG Negative cnnectin t DC pwer supply (12 24V) BLUE CTRL Switched psitive cntrl input VIOLET NO Cntacts clsed when blt pins are extended, and VIOLET COM cntacts pen when blt pins are retracted WHITE NO Cntacts clsed when dr is aligned, and cntacts WHITE COM pen when dr is pen Pwer Blt Psitin Switch Dr Psitin Switch 6.1 Fail Safe Cnnectin When wiring the COBALT, the psitive vltage is cnnected t RED, negative is cnnected t BLACK and a switched psitive vltage wire cnnected t BLUE. In Fail Safe cnfiguratin applying vltage t the COBALT signals it t lck. The lck signal in Fail Safe cnfiguratin is active high. Wire lm frm lck WHITE WHITE VIOLET VIOLET BLUE BLACK RED Dr Psitin Switch Blt Psitin Switch NC - Unlcked NO - Lcked - + DC Pwer Supply 6.2 Fail Secure Cnnectin When wiring the COBALT, the psitive vltage is cnnected t RED, negative is cnnected t BLACK and a switched psitive vltage wire cnnected t BLUE. In Fail Secure cnfiguratin applying vltage t the COBALT signals it t unlck. The lck signal in Fail Secure cnfiguratin is active lw. 6.3 Jumper psitin The fail mde f the COBALT is factry set as Fail Safe, i.e. in the event f a pwer cut the COBALT will unlck. Befre the lck is installed this can be changed t Fail Secure by repsitining the jumper lcated next t the 7-way plug n the end f the lck. Select the desired jumper lcatin as indicated: Jumper in Fail Safe psitin. Jumper in Fail Secure psitin. Fail Safe = Fail Unlcked = Pwer T Lck = PTL Fail Secure = Fail Lcked = Pwer T Open = PTO 7. OPERATION 7.1 Fail Safe Operatin Assume the lck is installed and wired, the dr is pen and there is vltage applied t the BLUE wire. As the dr clses the COBALT senses the dr appraching and activates the apprpriate blt pin t pull the dr int centre alignment. Once the first blt pin has fully extended, the secnd blt pin activates and drives t its full extensin. If the dr clses t a centre aligned psitin quickly then bth blt pins activate at the same time rather than ne leading the ther. The Blt Psitin and Dr Psitin mnitrs will have changed state as the dr is mved int place and secured. T unlck the dr, vltage is remved frm the BLUE wire. The COBALT will immediately release and will d s even when significant lad is being applied t the dr. With the dr nw pen the Blt Psitin and Dr Psitin mnitrs change state again. The COBALT will remain unlcked as lng as the dr is pen but will instantly relck when vltage is applied t the BLUE wire and the dr is clsed. In the event f a pwer failure, vltage is remved frm the BLUE wire and the COBALT unlcks. 7.2 Fail Secure Operatin Assume the lck is installed and wired, the dr is pen and vltage is remved frm the BLUE wire. As the dr clses the COBALT senses the dr appraching and activates the apprpriate blt pin t pull the dr int centre alignment. Once the first blt pin has fully extended, the secnd blt pin activates and drives t its full extensin. Remving the lck cver may vid the warranty. A dry clth can be used t plish the stainless steel face plate and strike plate as required. 10. WARRANTY The COBALT is cvered with a manufacturers 12mnth warranty against faulty r malfunctining parts, cmpnents r prduct. At the manufacturer s discretin, either a replacement lck r affected part will be supplied t remedy the fault r the lck can be returned at the custmer s expense t the manufacturer fr repair.
