VOL. 55 NO. 17 THURSDAY 17TH OCTOBER 2013 THE ROTARY CLUB OF BENDIGO SOUTH Connect to the Community Contents... SignPost MEETS THURSDAYS 6pm for 6:30pm, @ THE FOUNDRY HOTEL Welcome to this weeks edition of the SignPost... There were many Mad Hatters at the meeting last Thursday where the theme for the meeting was Hat Day, to support the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund fundraising event, raising money for research into Mental Health. We had red hats, multicolored hats, regular and sun hats, and some very quirky hats! The prize for the biggest hat went to Tony Plant who came as The Hat Trapper, and had a rabbit trap welded to fit his head. The winner of the most original hat went to Terry Dalwood in his dreadlocks and crocheted beanie. Terry was able to give a short rapper session prior to receiving his prize where he sang the banana boat song to very loud applause. The hats theme was also represented in the Sergeant s session, where monies raised would go towards the ARHRF. It was a great evening, and so much better due to the effort of so many members who supported the event by wearing a hat. The other most important process that took place at last Thursday s meeting, was the acknowledgement of our two retiring Past Presidents, Ralph Birrell and David Cotton. Both Ralph and David have long associations with Rotary, and a combined total of 45 years of service with the Rotary Club of Bendigo South. Everyone present at the evening was overwhelmed by the summaries of both gentlemen s Rotary lives, and the amazing variety of achievements that occurred under their direction during their years of service. It was with immense thanks that I wished them well in their retirement from Rotary; and with the presentation of their commemorative plaques, both Ralph and David thanked the Rotarians for their support and fellowship over the many years of their association with the Club. EVENTS CALENDAR 2 WEEKLY DUTIES ROSTER 3 MEETING INFORMATION 3 THIS WEEK IN PHOTOS 4 DIRECTORY 6 Don t forget we re meeting at La Trobe Uni this Thursday night!! During the week I attended a planning meeting for the Cluster Valentines Ball, to be held on Valentine s Day, Friday February 14 th 2014 at the Bendigo Town Hall. The theme for the night will be Hearts and Roses, with all monies raised going to the Oncology Department at Bendigo Health. At present, the majority of the Cluster Clubs are represented on the planning committee, but if you would be interested in assisting either in the planning or on the day, would you please contact me. It is also planned to have a large prize raffle leading up to the event, so if you have any ideas or contacts with businesses that you feel may be able to help with the prizes, could you also contact me. Please consider marking this date in your diaries for next February. Presently both PE Rod Spitty and I are planning for the District 9800 Conference to be held at the Gold Coast March 6-9 th 2014, and the RI Convention in Sydney next June 2014. We have a few members who have shown interest in attending one or the other of the events, and I will be asking the other Club Presidents to indicate whether they or any of their Club members will be attending, with a view to a group booking for travel and accommodation. If you are interested in attending the District Conference or RI Convention, please speak with Rod or myself. Don t forget this week s meeting will be at the La Trobe University Health Campus. I will be absent this week, due to work commitments, so Peter Ryall will be Chairperson for the evening. I will look forward to hearing about the evening, and hope all who attend have a great evening. bendigosouthrotary.org.au See you all in a fortnight s time, Helene Brown - President of the Rotary Club of Bendigo South
