5 Our number one priority for long-term strategic plan is to significantly increase membership. Our club peaked at 62 members in , and began the Rotary year with 29. Since then, we have added 9 new members and lost one, for a net gain of 8 as of March 29, or 28%. -- Our Club launched the "Ignite" program when it was introduced last year. Unfortunately our club did not achieve Premier status last year or this year, but we have now established a solid based for further membership expansion and Club leadership plans to implement the program more fully to reflect our success in expansion and retention. --Our club held three "membership" events this year. The first was actually the joint DG reception at Paradise Grill on July 17, where three potential members were invited to see how Rotary works on the island of Maui. Similarly, we invited the same 3 potentials to an island-wide event featuring PRIP Rick King on July 29. We invited friends and family to our Christmas Party on December 18. Our new fundraiser, Maui Melodies, on March 29 has been widely marketed in traditional media, our website, the RCs of Maui website, and Facebook sites. To attract guests, each member provided a list of 3-5 individuals in the community that have expressed an interest in Rotary. --The Ignite program is the focus for members/clubs that like to achieve points and work toward winning Premier status. The most effective driver of membership this year has been existing members bringing in friends or colleagues. PE Jim Calandra has recruited 3 of his neighbors and friends, 1 new member came from the same company as 2 existing members, and another member joined because of our close association with the Maui Food Bank and our new relationship with Kihei Charter School. Recently we have had 2 transfers from California Clubs, one of them our PN Ron Harris. --We are convinced that this model recruitment of friends and attracting new members with exciting projects and long-range commitments to schools, specific non-profits, and Kihei-specific service projects will lead to even stronger growth going forward. --There is ample reason for optimism. The real estate and tourist industries are booming, which the key engine of membership growth on Maui. Many of our membership losses have been traced to job losses or transfers in these or peripheral industries, such as banking and title companies. The decline in members of Realtor Association of Maui as recently reversed, and both transaction levels and visitor counts are up by double digits. Real-world social activity 1st and 4th Friday events, Kupu Maui (dining events at local farms), Business Brainstormers meetings, TEDx Maui, etc are bringing together social media types from all industries. Many of these meetups have all of the characteristics of a Rotary meeting except the regular weekly meeting feature. While in their early incarnations, they tended to be spontaneous, they are increasingly planned events. This it at once a source of competition for RCs and a new area of membership development that we can exploit by participating, both in the social media aspect (FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr) and in their events. How to incorporate effective social media strategy into marketing programs is the burning issue for small business owners and independent contractors in the real estate and tourist industries. Our challenge is to make Rotary an essential element of that strategy.

7 Membership Set a Goal to bring 7 new members. To date we have brought in 7 new members. All new members have attended an Orientation meeting, participated in at least one club project, been assigned a committee to work on, been assigned a mentor. Some new members are going to head up projects now and some next year. Rotarians have brought 34 visitors to our club this year. We have had potential members participate in our Service Projects. We have approached former members to rejoin our club. We have encouraged each member to make a list of all the people that they meet in 24 hours and invite the best person on the list to visit our club. We have passed out invitation cards for our meeting so Rotarians can give them to people. We frequently emphasized bringing new members at our meetings. To date, we have 885 points on the Ignite sheet and are a Double Premier Club! Our new members are quickly integrated into the club. New members take on leadership roles when possible. Our current treasurer has been in the club one year. Our President Elect Nominee has been in the club two years. Next year s Club Service Chair has been in the club one year. By filling the leadership roles with a combination of senior and new members we are building the strength of the club.

14 Despite two Presidents-Elect resigning last year, our membership continued to forge ahead with four (4) quarterly co-presidents agreeing to lead the group. Co-presidents Lasar, Jarrett, Doreen and Tony had a goal to right-size membership to about 35 active members. Although inactive members paid their dues, their chronic absence and apathy did not contribute towards the overall health, direction and momentum of the club. Implemented or maintained a club retention program. We decided to increase club dues by $50 annually to cover new club obligations, but mostly to remind inactive members that they either participate or they would be wasting their hard earned money. Membership chair Skip continued the arduous task of contacting these absent or inactive members. We believe we are now going in the right direction to build and retain active members who will enable us to achieve our strategic goals. Performed a classification and membership diversity assessment. Once again we reviewed member diversity and found that, about half the club membership (50%) had unique classifications. The remaining 50% are made up of the following: Retirees, Financial Advisors, Realtors, Physicians, and Bankers. Groupings by age and ethnicity was fairly distributed. The percentage of women now accounts for 28% of the club membership, a 3% increase over last year, and will likely grow. Have a Membership committee / Membership Development Program to recruit more members / Updated Ignite program. We formed a committee earlier in the year for recruiting. As Lasar took on her duties as club president, Skip became the sole chair for membership. Member Jarrett was assigned to develop and manage a list of business owners and other potential candidates from the Pearlridge and surrounding areas. Tony assisted Skip in planning and coordinating program booklets for the annual recruiting event. Although not officially called MDP, RCP members consistently invited spouses, visiting Rotarians, and other guests to our luncheons, service projects, tours, and social functions. One of the year s highlights was our Wine Tasting event with a master sommelier, which eventually produced one new member. With Lasar s return to co-chair membership, the Ignite program is back on track. At least 10% of the members sponsored a new member this year. Four (4) members, or 10% contributed to the recruiting and induction of new member Andrew Muccio. Past-president Tony invited Andrew and his wife to our Wine Tasting recruiting event, and invited Andrew to several luncheon meetings as a guest prior to giving him an application. Member co-chairs Lasar and Skip, and PDG Dick Mosko conducted pre-induction counseling or fireside chats with prospects to ensure they knew what was expected of them. Although Andrew s induction did not contribute to a net positive growth, he did add to the diversity of the club through his age and classification. All new members were assigned/recruited to work in a specific committee / New member information added to RI database within 1 week of each new member induction. Club Sgt-at-Arms Gordon followed up Andrew s induction by immediately assigning him to become a lunch greeter, which enabled him to know the members more quickly. Our Secretary Ed added Andrew s information to the RI database promptly. Andrew s induction: 1) Achieved a positive Net Growth membership by 1 March 2014; 2) Achieved a positive Net Growth of at least 10%; 3) Increased diversity (age, gender, classification) in the club through age and classification.

16 Membership Development Narrative Formed a membership committee with 5 members at the beginning of year. Developed a list of potential new members. Assigned sponsors to follow up with potential new members. Updated the club s Prospective and New Member Orientation Guide, a 15 page document that helps members in recruitment and contains information for new and prospective members. Membership Chair has provided programs on membership, including a club assembly. Potential, honorary, and new members were included in our social functions, including our holiday party, annual BBQ at CJM Stables, Holo Holo boat trip, service projects, fundraisers, and offsite meetings. For our frequent visitors from off island, we offer a Kolea membership, where they receive a name badge and are included on our newsletter mailing list. Some of the former Kolea members who ended up moving to Kauai are now active members of the club. We offer potential member opportunities to guest speakers, as well as to the generous donors from our community. We follow the Ignite program and were one of the first clubs to reach Premier Status again this year.
