THE COST OF DOING NOTHING The Kennedy Forum Illinois builds on a movement begun by Patrick Kennedy in 2012 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of President Kennedy signing the Community Mental Health Act, a landmark law that laid the foundation of contemporary mental health policy. Patrick has launched a bold, ongoing effort The Kennedy Forum - to advance the work President Kennedy began, embarking on a new era of achievement in mental health. Mental illness and substance abuse annually costs employers an estimated $80 to $100 billion. One in four Americans are affected, 16 percent of all Illinoisans. And despite the fact that prevention and effective treatment are possible, most do not receive adequate care. Approximately two-thirds of people with symptoms of mental and substance abuse disorders do not receive any treatment at all for their condition. Illinois business and civic leaders who understand the cost of doing nothing is too great are convening this November to catalyze a broadbased, united campaign in our State to develop a common policy agenda, amplify public demand and build political will to establish access to quality mental health for all Illinoisans.
THE KENNEDY FORUM ILLINOIS Will serve as a catalyzing vehicle to unite the private and public sectors around a mental health action plan to advance access to effective and timely prevention, intervention and treatment for mental illnesses and substance use disorders for all Illinoisans. The following events will take place to launch this historic movement: CONFERENCE FORUM November 13, 2014 1:00-5:00pm A half day Forum featuring general and breakout sessions covering a wide range of topics including: advances in mental health research and treatment; community approaches to mental and substance use disorders; the implementation of mental health parity in all health plans; the impact of untreated mental health in the workplace and community at large.
