Upper Respiratory Tract Nose Structure that is supported by bone and cartilage Provides an entrance for air Possess coarse hairs inside the nostrils to filter incoming air Nasal Cavity Space posterior to the nose Nasal septum Nasal conchae will divide the cavity into different passageways lined with mucous membrane

Upper Respiratory Tract Paranasal sinuses Air-filled spaces in the skull (maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid) Functions Lines with mucous membrane Opens to the nasal cavity and is continuous with its lining Pharynx Passageway for food and air Aids to produce sounds for speech

Lower Respiratory Tract Larynx= Enlargement in the airway made up of muscles, cartilage, and elastic tissue Lies superior to the trachea but inferior to the pharynx Houses vocal cords 2 pairs of folds made up of muscles, connective tissue, and mucous membrane with a triangular silt between the folds, glottis False vocal cords= do not produce sound Function of the false vocal cords True vocal cords During breathing, the cords relax and glottis open

Lower Respiratory Tract Trachea Anterior to the esophagus and extends into the thoracic cavity Right and left bronchi Epithelium: pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells Mucus produced from the membrane trap incoming particles from the air Tracheal wall is supported by 20 incomplete cartilaginous rings

Lower Respiratory Tract Bronchial Tree Branched tubes(bronchi) leading from the trachea to the lungs Right and left primary bronchi Bronchioles Alveolar ducts Air sacs Alveoli are the only site where there is gas exchanged between the air and blood; therefore they are surrounded by capillaries

Lower Respiratory Tract Lungs =Pair of organs (right and left) that are spongy and coneshaped and are separated by the mediastinum Enclosed by the diaphragm and thoracic cage Bronchi and large blood vessel enter each lung Lungs are divided into lobes lobules alveoli Right lung: 3 lobes and left lung: 2 lobes Layers: Visceral pleura Parietal pleura Pleura cavity lies between the 2 membranes and contains serous fluid to lubricate

Breathing Mechanism Ventilation = breathing, moving air in and out of the lungs Inspiration = occurs when atmospheric pressure forces air into the lungs Increasing the size of the thoracic cavity (by displacing the diaphragm down and raising ribs) decreases the intra-alveolar pressure within the lung Atmospheric pressure on the outside becomes greater and forces air into the respiratory tract Expiration = occurs due to the elastic recoil of the lungs, muscle tissue, and the surface tension within the alveoli Tissues recoil, muscles relax, the diaphragm moves upward, and causes an increase intra-alveolar pressure ---air is squeezed out

Control of Breathing Normal breathing is a rhythmic, involuntary act even though the muscles are under voluntary control ***We can control the depth of inspiration and expiration*** Respiratory Center of the Brainstem Medulla oblongata Pons Dorsal respiratory group Ventral respiratory group Pneumotaxic area

Factors Affecting Breathing Chemoreceptors (peripheral and central)= sensitive to changes in carbon dioxide and hydrogen in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid Hydrogen or carbon dioxide Hyperventilation Emotions Lung tissue stretching Exercise

Respiratory Membrane ***Alveoli are the only sites of gas exchange between the atmosphere and the blood*** Respiratory Membrane Consists of the epithelial cells of the alveolus and the endothelial cells of the capillary The membranes fused and gas exchange occurs across the respiratory membrane Gas will diffuse from a region of high to low pressure Oxygen Carbon dioxide

Oxygen Gas Transport 98% bound and carried by hemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin Oxyhemoglobin Dissociation of oxyhemoglobin Carbon dioxide Carried in blood plasma Carbaminohemoglobin Bicarbonate ions mainly transported this way H 2 O + CO 2 H 2 CO 3 H + + HCO - 3 (BLOOD-systemic) H + + HCO - 3 H 2 CO 3 H 2 O + CO 2 (LUNG-pulmonary)
