Year 13 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care Summer Independent Learning Task 2018

Unit 5 Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care When we have a group of similar cells working together this is called a tissue, for example muscle tissue is made up of lots of muscle cells. All the cells in a tissue look the same and perform the same job. A group of different tissue working together to do a specific job is known as an organ, our heart, stomach, lungs are all organs. Different organs working together form a body system, our heart and blood vessels work together as part of our circulatory system. For your SIL, you will focus on tissues and some of our body systems.

Unit 5 Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care There are numerous types of tissues in the human body. Each with their own names and specific functions. In this work you need to show an understanding of the FOUR main tissue types and the roles these play in TWO specific body organs

Assessment Criteria By completing this task your work will be assessed on the following criteria: P2 outline the structure of the main tissues of the body

Presenting Your Work This work needs to be presented as a series of FACTSHEETS They should be colourful and include relevant annotated (labelled) images for tissue types and body organs Font size no larger than 12 Produce this assignment as a MS Word document All pages must be numbered All work needs to be referenced correctly and must include a bibliography

Tissue Types To complete this part of the task you must produce FOUR factsheets which includes a description (structure and function) of each tissue type: 1. Epithelial: Simple (cuboidal, columnar, squamous, ciliated), Compound (simple, keratinised) 2. Connective: blood, cartilage, bone, areolar, adipose 3. Muscle: striated, non-striated, cardiac 4. Nervous: neurones, neuroglia

Body Organs Choose TWO from the list: Heart Lungs Brain and Spinal Column Stomach Liver Pancreas Duodenum Ileum and Colon Kidneys Bladder Ovaries, uterus/testes Skin To complete this part of the task you will need to focus on the structure and function of the tissues within TWO of these organs. Each body organ will need its own factsheet.

Body Systems Within the human body we have a number of body systems. Each with their own structure and specific functions. In this work you need to show an understanding of TWO of our body systems.

Assessment Criteria.. By completing this task your work will be assessed on the following criteria: P4 Explain the physiology of two named body systems.

Presenting your work.. This work needs to be presented as a report on a MS Word document (follow on from P2 work) Please include relevant annotated (labelled) images for each body system Font size no larger than 12 All pages must be numbered All work needs to be referenced correctly and must include a bibliography

Please make sure you include.. You need to outline the structure and function of TWO of the following systems (cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive system): For the CV System: include blood vessels (arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, veins); pulmonary and systemic circulation; structure and function of the blood and the transport of materials within plasma and haemoglobin. For the Respiratory System: Begin with the role of air passages in nose; include structure and functions of trachea, bronchi, lungs (bronchial tree, alveoli); intercostal muscles, diaphragm; ventilation, gaseous exchange, diffusion, cell respiration. For the Digestive System: Start with ingestion & mechanical digestion in the mouth. Include the role of salivary glands and explain what happens in each stage of the alimentary canal (oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, ileum, colon; liver, pancreas). Discuss the role of digestive system in breakdown and absorption of food materials - include peristalsis, digestion, absorption, and egestion.

Referencing your work To reference a book In text write it as Stretch and Whitehouse, (2010) at the end of the section it relates to. In Bibliography Author, (year) Title, Publisher (at the end of the work in bibliography) Example: Stretch B and Whitehouse M (2010) BTEC level 3 Health and Social Care Book 1.
