ELITE ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Background The Pimpama Sport Academy Elite Athlete Development Program has been developed through collaboration with industry professionals and elite athletes. Current research on the Long Term Athlete Development model and youth conditioning, along with a holistic approach to athletic development, was used to design academy structure. Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) The Long Term Athlete Development model and philosophy suggests that there are critical developmental stages of life where training can be maximized. Through research based evidence there are 6 identified phases, each of which has specific and appropriate training aims. Sports Scientists who established the LTAD model have concluded that it takes 8-12 years for a talented athlete to reach their full potential and elite status. Phase 1 and 2 of the LTAD model focus on fundamental movement and learning how to train. Between Year 7 and 10 of High School, students are at the appropriate age for Phase 3; between the ages of 12-16 for boys and 11-15 for girls. Phase 3 focuses on Training to Train, where the aim is to develop key components of fitness that are generally central to all athletes irrespective of type of sport. These components include: strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, mobility and aerobic conditioning. Athletes continue to develop and establish the key Fundamental Movement Patterns required including Body Management Skills, Locomotor Skills, and Object Control Skills. There is also a major focus on prehabilitation, rehabilitation and recovery practices. A ratio of 60% training to 40% competition in this phase is recommended. Phase 4 & 5 of LTAD have a competition focus and train specifically for a chosen sport. Physical Literacy is a term also developed in conjunction with the LTAD model that is defined as.motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life (Whitehead, 2014). The program is structured so that students can afford additional time (while still meeting Australian Curriculum requirements) to enhance their development and performance through gaining Physical Literacy. The Holistic nature of this program, and its structure, means that student athletes needs are catered for through a school, personal and sport life balance. Throughout the program, student athletes will receive support, continual development, and guidance towards pathways that will optimise their opportunity to achieve success. Program Details The program is aimed at high performing athletes with drive and aspirations to reach elite level status in their chosen sport. It is designed to enhance athletic potential and it is expected that students within the program already belong to a sporting club, or a number of clubs, and/or are already training and competing throughout the year. Athletes can apply as a technical or a general athlete. Both technical and general athletes complete the same athlete development program, however technical athletes receive sports specific technical coaching in place of fundamental movement technical skills. Technical sports include: Football (soccer). General sports include, but is not limited to: swimming, hockey, touch, oztag, surf lifesaving, golf, equestrian, gymnastics, cricket, baseball, rugby league, rugby union, AFL, tennis, netball, athletics.
