LDANYS is the NYS advocate for children and adults with learning disabilities, their families, and the programs that serve them. Prevention of learning disability is one of our major priorities. There are many causes of learning disabilities and many cannot be prevented, however, learning disabilities resulting from alcohol exposure during fetal development ARE 100% preventable. LDANYS objective is to ensure that our training audiences are provided with a variety of successful, high quality training delivery choices that provide measurable results. Our training is efficient, effective, and meets the diverse needs of professionals, agency personnel and others who want to learn more about FASD. LDANYS training is available through two options: a six-hour comprehensive session, or an abbreviated format of three hours or less, consisting of 1 training session in the morning and 1 in the afternoon where trainees may select the session to meet their scheduling needs. Providing options in the training module structure ensures that our program can adapt to the presentation format of workshops, staffing seminars and conferences. LDANYS is prepared to work with you to meet your professional development plan to ensure that your investment in professional growth is one that yields positive results for you and your staff. Prevalence of FAS, ARND, and ARBD combined is at least 10 per 1,000, or 1 percent of all births. Based on estimated rates of FASD per live births, FASD affects nearly 40,000 newborns each year. The cost to the nation of FAS alone may be up to $6 billion each year. For one individual with FAS, the lifetime cost is at least $2 million. More than 1 in 5 pregnant women report alcohol use in the first trimester, 1 in 14 in the second trimester, and 1 in 20 in the third trimester. 1 in 30 pregnant women reports high-risk drinking (defined as 7 or more drinks per week, or 5 or more drinks on any one occasion). The rates of binge drinking and heavy drinking during pregnancy varied little among white and Hispanic women. African- American women had slightly higher rates. 4
