7 SAKSHAM - I SAKSHAM Phase I gave us insight into issues that HIV positive children and adolescents faced in their daily lives. SAKSHAM Phase I commenced with setting up of and creating a common platform where HIV positive children could be by themselves and be accepted. A conducive and safe space for such children, through the concept of Study Club for years was created. One study club was formed in each of the 5 UNICEF focused districts namely Sangli, Latur, Nandurbar, Yavatmal and Chandrapur. In order to deal with adolescents, a Teen Club was similarly formed in each of the 5 UNICEF focused districts to interact with adolescents between the ages of years of age. HIV positive children were to be empowered to build positive relationships, improve their selfesteem and acquire life skills through peer mentorship. Take on adult role modeling and structured activities, ultimately leading to improved clinical and mental health outcomes as well as a healthy transition into adulthood. Teen Club aimed to strive to give each teenager the opportunity to normalize their social experiences and to enhance their positive outlook on life. Having created a Teen Club, adolescents have voiced their fears, their needs and their requirements. Parents also expressed their views, opinions and requirements for their positive children. The following points of concern emerged from the Experience Sharing and Review Meeting (ESRM) that took place to amalgate all the learning and sharing that took place. 1. No medication could compromise for the inner discomfort and turmoil that was felt on being HIV positive. 2. Psychosocial, emotional and mental support was as important as adherence to treatment. Children and adolescents wanted to talk and express what they felt. 3. HIV positive children and adolescents had big dreams and wanted to achieve them. They needed an outlet to express their inner desires and aspirations. 4. Parents were willing to support and encourage their off springs and expressed that very clearly. 5. A strong impetus to take this further was required in order to guide, lead and assist these children and adolescents. Parents strongly wanted this activity to be taken forward. 7
8 To conduct this activity at district level 10 facilitators, & 75 children with their caregivers were oriented about the program. 25 meetings on different issues were organized in 5 districts. Unicef and NMP+ consultants monitored each and every activity of the program. In the month of December 2012 ESRM was conducted for children of both clubs. Training Of Trainers by Unicef Consultant Orientation of Saksham phase I to Children and care givers from districts 8
