16 AIDS awareness camp held for truck drivers BANGALORE: Various fun events were organised for truck drivers in the city on Saturday to generate awareness among them about HIV/AIDS. More than 200 truck drivers, who operate from Bangalore to other states such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan took part in Truckers Utsav. The social arm of Transport Corporation of India (TCI) organised the event. The event was held under the national HIV/AIDS prevention programme for longdistance truck drivers and their helpers. The programme, called Project Kavach, covers 15 trans-shipment locations in the country. In the event, the truck drivers and general public pledged to indulge in safe sex. A box of condoms had been kept for people. Besides test for HIV/AIDS, a health check-up camp was organised for the truck drivers wherein they could get their eyes, skin and teeth checked at a subsidised cost. A S Kullolli, Programme Officer of TCI Foundation, said truck drivers were most vulnerable. Keeping this in view, he said, the foundation decided to organise the awareness camp to mark World AIDS Day, which is on December 1. More than 800 people had gathered for the entertainment programme in the evening.
17 TCI organizes Trucker s Utsav to mark World AIDS Day The Utsav saw participation from truckers in the seven centres who vowed to fight against HIV/AIDS by practising safe sex. TCI Foundation (TCIF), the social arm of Transport Corporation of India Ltd. - India s leading integrated supply chain and logistics solutions provider, organised a Trucker s Utsav simultaneously at 7 locations across the country. The activity was organised under a national HIV / AIDS prevention program for long distance truck drivers and helpers called Project Kavach which is an endeavour to arrest the spread of AIDS amongst the trucking community. The Utsav saw participation from truckers in the seven centres (Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Indore, Nagpur, Varanasi and Icchapuram) who vowed to fight against HIV/AIDS by practising safe sex. Over the next four days, the Utsav would be organised in 8 other centres - Agra, Dhanbad, Ghaziabad, Mumbai, Jaipur, Jahedpur, Kanpur and Pune.
18 Trucker s Utsav, an infotainment event, for one of the core activities of Project Kavach as it acts as catalyst for communicating behavior change messages to sizable groups in a fun, peer-supportive context. This is done through the medium of concert, street plays, songs dance, games quizzes and special award for audience participation. The Utsav had various multi-specialty health camps and parallel competitive events like Joshilay Janbaaz (Arm Wrestling), Jaanbaaz Khiladi (Bucket Lifting), Sangeet Saat (Singing Competition), Chamakte Sitare (Best Maintained Truck) took place. Speaking on the initiative, D P Agarwal, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, TCIF said, Being the leading logistics company in India we think it is our responsibility to make life better for the truckers who are the lifeline for the sector. Project Kavach is our endeavor towards the truckers who, owing to their work, are highly vulnerable to AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. The Trucker s Utsav is the annual feature of under the initiative that provides a platform to bring thousands of truckers together to spread out the message on prevention of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases in an interesting, entertaining and interactive way. There are about 5 million truckers in India and out of these around 2 million ply on long-distance routes. These long-distance truckers are more vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases, the reason being long absences from home, tough working conditions, young and sexually active coupled with low self esteem and stigma and discrimination. A study data reveals that 36% truckers visit sex workers as against 3-12% of adult men in the general population, while 10-12% of clients of sex workers are reportedly truckers. The overall prevalence of HIV/AIDS among LDTs has been reported to be 4.6% as against 0.36% among general population. Truckers play an important role in keeping the wheels of the commerce spinning while generating profits to the industry. At the same time, these Truckers face a
19 difficult life. There is job insecurity, rigorous working conditions and dangers around every bend. In addition they exist without any respect from the society. It is therefore not rare that many turn to alcohol, drugs and resort to unsafe commercial sex to seek relief out of their itinerant and monotonous life, which places them at risk for STIs and HIV/AIDS. An initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Project Kavach is implementing a comprehensive integrated package on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) treatment; Behaviour Change Communications (BCC), Condom promotion, and counselling amongst truckers, through strategically located interventions at major trucking halt points known as Khushi Clinics, across 15 locations in 9 states along national highways of the country. TCIF is also the Technical Support Group (TSG) by the Government of India, for the nationwide truckers program initiated by NACO (National AIDS Control Organization) from April As a TSG, TCIF on behalf of NACO, is replicating and upscaling around 131 interventions in conjunction with SACS (State AIDs Control Societies) all across the nation.
