1 HIV EPIDEMIOLOGY PROGRAM ADVANCED HIV DISEASE (AIDS) QUARTERLY SURVEILLANCE SUMMARY Cases Reported as of June 30, 2002 Issued July 15, S. Commonwealth Ave., Suite 1920 Los Angeles, CA (Phone) (213) (Fax) (213)
2 THOMAS L. GARTHWAITE, M.D. Director of Health Services and Chief Medical Officer JONATHAN E. FIELDING, M.D., M.P.H. Director of Public Health and Health Officer HIV Epidemiology Program GORDON BUNCH, M.A., Director 600 South Commonwealth Avenue, Suite 1920 Los Angeles, California TEL (213) ? FAX (213) July 12, 2002 Dear Colleague: In this, the July 15, 2002 issue of the Advanced HIV Disease (AIDS) Quarterly Surveillance Summary for Los Angeles County, we have added two tables to the Summary in response to frequent data requests. Table 19 breaks down cumulative AIDS cases from 1982 to the present by demographics and risk exposures for each Service Planning Area. Table 20 presents the same breakdown for AIDS cases diagnosed in the year 2000 the latest year for which data are nearly complete. Also, in Appendix 2 on page 27, we have added a caveat for the interpretation of rates in which a small number of observations are used to compute the rate. In accordance with criterion used by the National Center for Health Statistics, rates based on less than 20 observations are considered unreliable. These rates are, then, to be interpreted with more caution than would be needed for rates based on more observations, because relatively small changes in the number of observations could inordinately change the magnitude of the corresponding rate. If you have questions about why we have made these additions or how to interpret these data, please contact Virginia Hu or myself at the telephone number above. If and when future major changes are made in the Summary, we will highlight them as we have done here. Also enclosed, you will find the first Annual Report of HIV Epidemiology Program s Supplement to HIV/AIDS Surveillance (SHAS) project. SHAS is the only population-based interview study of persons diagnosed with AIDS in Los Angeles County and also includes a group of HIV-infected women from one large public clinic. SHAS is a multi-site study funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1990 and is currently conducted in 18 sites around the United States. SHAS was designed to obtain supplemental behavioral, demographic and other information on persons diagnosed with HIV and AIDS. In Los Angeles, SHAS is used to inform policy and planning decisions concerning the prevention and care of persons with HIV and AIDS. In addition, over 40 local and national publications and presentations have resulted from the SHAS project. For special analyses of SHAS data or questions about the project, please contact SHAS Principal Investigator, Amy Wohl, PhD, or SHAS Project Coordinator Denise Johnson, MPH, at tel. (213) Finally, a reminder that HIV surveillance began on July 1, 2002 and that HIV Epidemiology Program staff are available during business hours (tel ) to help explain the new regulations, how to implement them, or to take phone reports. Our HIV reporting web site is up and running with downloadable forms and information, including answers to some frequently asked questions. You can access our web site at Sincerely, Douglas M. Frye, MD, MPH Deputy Director and Medical Epidemiologist
