Cicada killer wasp Aerial nests Paper wasps red wasp, European paper wasp European hornet Bald faced hornet Mud daubers Common paper wasp red wasp Umbrella nest Long dangling legs Mated queens survive winter 6

European paper wasp Markings resemble yellowjackets but have long, dangling legs Open nest with exposed cells Detect movement 15 ft Reasons for EPW success Earlier nest establishment before natives, faster colony buildup More use of enclosed nesting sites exterior light fixtures, grills, sheds, toy boxes More varied diet Prevention Limit nesting sites wall holes, screen louvers Destroy nests and queens early Wasp & hornet sprays Dusts in voids 7

European hornet 1 long yellow and brown, queen 1.25 Football shaped nest enclosed in paper Usually in void hollow trees, sometimes in structures, usually > 6 above ground European hornet 300+ workers up to 800 in fall Foraging workers not aggressive Will fly at night attracted to lights Girdle stems Asian Giant hornet 8

Asian Giant hornet Nest in hollow trees Feed on honey bee larvae Management Do not seal opening Use professional or wait until winter Seal opening for indoor nest before spring Don t use gasoline May create new entrance after treatment Baldfaced hornet 1 long black with white markings Enclosed paper nests near ends of branches, occasionally in bushes or in structures Usually nest high, above traffic Sentries 9

Mud daubers Solitary wasps Mud tubes in sheltered places Pack tubes with insects or spiders Very unlikely to sting Velvetant cowkiller Solitary wandering wasp no nest To avoid stings Wear light colored, smooth finished clothing. Avoid perfumed soaps, shampoos, and deodorants. Don't wear cologne or perfume. Avoid bananas and banana scented toiletries. Wear clean clothing and bathe daily. (Sweat may anger bees.) Wear clothing to cover as much of the body as possible. Remain calm and still if a single stinging insect is flying around. (Swatting at an insect may cause it to sting.) If you are attacked by several stinging insects at once, run to get away from them. (Bees and wasps release a chemical when they sting, which attracts others.) If you are able to physically move out of the areaif a bee comes inside your vehicle, stop the car slowly, and open all the windows. People with a history of severe allergic reactions to insect bites or stings should consider carrying an epinephrine auto injector (EpiPen) and should wear a medical identification bracelet or necklace stating their allergy. 10

First aid Remove stinger honey bee Clean wound Control swelling ice, elevation, remove rings Treat symptoms acetaminophen or ibuprofen Antihistamine or calamine lotion Follow up 2 to 3 day clear up is normal 11
