1 Allergy Basics This handout describes the process for adding and removing allergies from a patient s chart. Another way to access allergies is through the menu. Allergies are listed on the banner bar below the patient s name. This text also is a quick link to the allergies section. Clicking this link is the fastest way to update a patient s allergies. 1. Select Patient Information from the menu. 2. Select Allergies from the Patient Information Tab. 2 Recording No Known Medication Allergies 1. Click No Known Medication Allergies then click OK. Recording a New Drug Allergy 1. Click Add to enter a new allergy. User Handouts\Allergies\Allergy Basics

3 2. Type the partial or full name of the substance in the search field then press enter or click on the binoculars. 3. Select the desired substance (e.g. doxycycline) then click OK. Note: All Yellow Fields are required fields. Fill out any other fields as needed. 4. Click the drop down arrow: Select a category (e.g. drug) 5. Click OK & New to add multiple allergies. 6. 4 Recording an Intolerance of Medication Intolerance can be recorded for all Active Drug Reactions within the Allergy list. 1. Click Add to enter a new Intolerance 1. Or Highlight an existing reaction from the list and click Modify to update 2. Select Intolerance from the dropdown menu for Type. 3. After completing any additional fields, Click OK Reaction Type will appear as listed below within the Allergy list User Handouts\Allergies\Allergy Basics

5 Adding Optional Fields Reaction Type and Symptoms 1a. Type the reaction in the Search field. Click on the binoculars or press Enter. 2. Select the reaction from the Reaction Search then press OK. 1b. Add Free Text may also be used to add a Reaction. Allergy Status, Severity, Info Source and Onset Additional information may be added to the allergy reaction including: Severity Info Source Onset of allergy. User Handouts\Allergies\Allergy Basics

6 Allergy Comments 1. Click the Add Comment button to add a comment. The date/time will be displayed to the left of the comment. 2. Type in free text box and click OK. Adding an Unlisted Substance 1. Click on the binoculars. 2. Type unlisted in the Search field then press Enter. 3. Select Unlisted Substance then click OK. User Handouts\Allergies\Allergy Basics

7 4. Click Add Comment. 5. Type the unlisted substance in the Comments field then click OK. 6. Click the drop down arrow: Select a category (e.g. drug). The comment containing the unlisted substance will be displayed here. 7. Click OK. Marking Allergies as Reviewed 1. Click Mark All as Reviewed. User Handouts\Allergies\Allergy Basics

8 Display Filter NKA is shown with a red line through it, indicating it was canceled. In the main allergy window this view is set to All. Click the drop down arrow to select a filter: Removing an Allergy All = All allergies (both active and inactive) Active = All current allergies. Inactive = All historical allergies, which are no longer current 1. Right-click doxycycline and select Cancel doxycycline to remove the drug from the allergy list of this patient. 9 The status of the drug is now changed to Canceled. A reason may be entered to note why the allergy is being canceled. 2. Click OK Removing No Known Medication Allergies (NKMA) If a medication allergy is added when NKMA is currently on the patient file, this warning will display. To continue, it will require approval for removing NKMA from the profile. Click Yes to cancel NKMA User Handouts\Allergies\Allergy Basics

10 Adding Favorites To quickly add common allergies the user is able to save favorite allergies. 1. Search for the allergy as you would above. Click on the allergy and then click Add to Favorites. 3. Click the desired folder to save the favorite allergy. Then click OK 2. The Favorites folder is already defaulted; however you may create additional folders by clicking Create Folder. 11 Adding a Favorite Allergy to the Substance Field 1. Click on the Favorites folder to quickly see your favorite allergies. 2. Double click on the allergy to add it to the Substance field. User Handouts\Allergies\Allergy Basics
