DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Choosing the right destination for studying Ayurveda is your first and most important decision. You need to trust that the Institution through which you intend studying will provide you with the knowledge, skills and personal qualities and abilities that are necessary to achieve your goals. This knowledge has to be consistent in this case, with both... the traditional subjects, methods, and objectives of Ayurveda, and the official, Nationally Recognised training competencies in Australia, so that you receive a qualification allowing you to practice Ayurveda professionally. The Australasian Institute of Ayurvedic Studies is aware of this responsibility and seeks to honour the trust displayed by its students. It is the goal of this Institute to support every student so they can reach their full potential. Our determination is to provide an environment where strong ethics are promoted and self-confidence, responsibility and positive relationships are all encouraged. I sincerely hope that as a prospective student, you will enjoy browsing through the various facilities, which have been created here and hope that you find us worthy of your trust. I wish you success in your undertaking, because this course of study is indeed a journey, through which you will emerge as a representative of the science of Ayurveda, as a changed person, equipped with skills beyond what you now consider possible. Dr. S. Ajit, (B.A.M.S., P.C.A.S) 1

MISSION STATEMENT The principal purpose of the Australasian Institute of Ayurvedic Studies (A.I.A.S) is to provide quality training in Ayurveda for the modern world, still reliant on and respectful towards the vast historical and empirical data gathered over the millennia from traditional Ayurveda practice. This training is based on the syllabus from the authentic curriculum developed in Indian universities and designed and delivered within the framework required by the Australian Vocational Educational Sector (Nationally recognized training qualifications). AIAS Ayurveda Graduates will emerge as valuable members of the community, benefitting especially those suffering ill health. Through the unique vision of Ayurveda and its therapeutic strategies, diet, herbal medicines and lifestyle education, people will discover better health and more productive and purposeful lives. AIAS is recognized and praised by both students and graduates as providing exceptional quality training in Ayurveda. A former teacher, (medical doctor) who studied Ayurveda in India said that this is the premier course in Australia - Anna, Australia I have just returned from India and, having dealt with Vaidyas/Doctors and Organisations in India, has only made me appreciate more and more what Dr Ajit offers and has achieved - Adam, AIAS Graduate 2

WHAT IS AYURVEDA? Ayurveda - pronounced eye-yur-vay-da Meaning - science/knowledge of life (ayuh = life + veda = knowledge) Origin - India Vaidya - a graduate of the CCIM endorsed Bachelor Degree in Ayurveda (B.A.M.S) in India. Purpose - to assist the ill in regaining health, enhance the health of the healthy; achieve purpose in living. Famous Texts - Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hrdayam Famous Scholars - Charaka (800 B.C.E), Sushruta (circa 1000 B.C.E), Jeevaka (6th century B.C.E), Pandit Shiv Sharma (20th century C.E). Evolving over the last 5 millenia on the soil of what is now known as India, Ayurveda is a natural and universal health science. Ayurveda recognises that all living beings are intimately connected with and are a part of Nature. All living beings respond to and are affected by their environment in predictable ways. The knowledge that Ayurveda provides is knowledge of oneself and the understanding of how any and all qualities in nature impact (whether positively or detrimentally) on living beings. This understanding provides relevance with respect to human health and illness. Although Ayurveda hails from a distant land, the knowledge is Universal - applicable to all human beings no matter their individual background, ethnicity, location or the times in which they live - because we are all a part of Nature. Being based upon the immutable laws of Nature, the theory and application of Ayurveda is necessary, easily applicable and adaptable in the current age and in any culture. The study of Ayurveda is a fascinating, enriching and rewarding engagement, one worthy of deep consideration and respect. Most students comment that after studying Ayurveda, they don t know what their lives would be like without it. Could Ayurveda be the missing link, the health model that offers key insights into how to live in the world and experience positive vibrant health and purpose? We, at A.I.A.S, believe so. As a healing discipline, Ayurveda focuses on the ways in which we can maintain good health, better manage ill health and improve our state of wellbeing beyond the norm. This is achieved by a deep understanding of how our lifestyles, dietary choices, herbal plants, our thoughts, our behaviours, the seasons and our vocation, can impact upon our unique body type (known as our Prakriti). Ayurveda introduces unique remedial methods ranging from specialized Massage therapies, Herbal treatments, Ayurvedic Counselling, Ayurvedic Nutrition and cooking and Ayurvedic Emotional healing programs, to improve health outcomes. Ayurveda s most valuable contribution is with regards to the need for each of us to understand our unique body type or Prakriti so that any recommendations made are with respect to each individual s unique requirements. Ayurveda offers a very personalized and individualistic form of health care. 3

THE AYURVEDIC DOCTOR - VAIDYA Ayurvedacharya or Vaidya is an official qualification for those persons who have earned their Bachelor degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) in India. This degree in traditional medicine is equivalent in duration and similar in curriculum to allopathic or modern medicine degrees around the world, through it s main focus is the unique science of Ayurveda. Entrance into the BAMS course in Ayurveda is available to students with the required pre-requisites in physics, chemistry, zoology and botany, who must then pass the State entrance examination, the Combined Premedical Test. The B.A.M.S degree is awarded by a University. The Central Council of Indian Medicine (C.C.I.M.) is the official body responsible for recognizing all bona fide degree holders in Ayurveda and Schools of Ayurvedic learning. C.C.I.M plays a very significant role much like the Australian Medical Council does for Allopathic Doctors. The public can then be assured that when they consult with an Ayurvedic Doctor recognized by C.C.I.M, they are consulting with an authentic, reputable and properly trained Ayurveda professional. Students of Ayurveda outside of India must seek the same level of training in Ayurveda and standards from any teacher of Ayurveda. Very few westerners have been able to pursue the B.A.M.S degree in India due to the time and expense involved in supporting oneself for 6 years in India, the fact that many courses are not hosted in English and the pre-requisite subjects and marks required for entrance into the Ayurveda degree program. 4

THE AYURVEDIC PRACTITIONER In Australia, the Nationally recognized training program in Ayurveda offered through the A.I.A.S ensures a high standard in Ayurveda skills and competencies. Our training curriculum is drawn from subjects studied in the B.A.M.S curriculum in India. Students study all required theory and practical subjects together with supervised clinical practice to prepare them to deliver authentic Ayurveda in this country. Dr Ajit has meticulously considered and chosen not only the traditional material for the course but teaches Ayurveda in such a way that it can be successfully applied, integrated and translated to this culture. WHY DO PEOPLE COME TO STUDY AYURVEDA? People come to Ayurveda seeking insights into health, a meaningful career and a new direction. Job Opportunities: Ayurveda is a growth industry in Australia, with demand for practitioners exceeding supply. Many mature aged students comment that this is their time now... a time to engage in a personally fulfilling and rewarding path that coincides as a vocation. Complimentary health practicioners to extend the range of diagnostic tools and theraputic treatment they offer in their existing practice. 5

WHY IS AYURVEDA EXPERIENCING A SURGE IN INTEREST? Ayurveda provides the theory and knowledge behind the unique expression of life in every individual. There is no presumption that all individuals will respond to a medicine or therapy in the same way. Ayurveda recognizes, perhaps more than any other development in health care, the absolute need to regard the individual wholistically and to take into consideration all facets of their life in order to effect positive change. Ayurveda proves easy and effective to integrate alongside other forms of both Complimentary Medicine and Allopathic Western Medicine. With current studies in Epigentics confirming the importance of lifestyle, diet, attitudes and emotions on the expression of genetic material - and the continuing search for a system of healthcare that respects individual requirements and the care of both mind and body, Ayurveda provides many of the missing elements in modern health care. WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED TO STUDY AYURVEDA? People from all backgrounds, ages and cultures are drawn to Ayurveda. Medical practitioners Dieticians, Naturopaths, Herbalists, Massage Practitioners, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Yoga teachers People looking for a career change and a meaningful vocation School leavers interested in alternative medicine and the wholistic nature of Ayurveda and wishing to take advantage of this growth sector in Natural medicine. Anyone interested in Ayurveda, health and alternative medicine 6

At A.I.A.S, our recent intakes have included Naturopaths, Medical practitioners, Yoga Teachers, Scientists, School Teachers, Graphic Designers, Engineers, Aged Care workers, Chefs, Mechanics, Corporate Executives, Musicians, Lawyers, Receptionists, Beauty Therapists, Surfing Instructors and busy Mums. I am filled with a sense of purpose and realisation that this is my calling for the rest of my life. I feel very fortunate that I have found my path and that within Ayurveda I have a holistic way of living that encompasses all aspects of my life - family, occupation, spirituality, health, relationships, ongoing learning The enormity of what Dr Ajit has put in place for sincere students of Ayurveda has dawned on me more fully... He has very intelligently designed a course that has layer by layer built up our knowledge through his lectures, his module notes and the assignments, both written and practical. He has enkindled my Agni for learning through his questions - Gita, AIAS Graduate Australia IS AYURVEDA DIFFICULT TO LEARN? The principles of Ayurveda are based on laws within Nature and are quite logical. If you commit yourself to the study and apply what you learn to your own life, you can become a successful representative of Ayurveda. Siddha is a term in the Sanskrit language applying to one who has attained something. Ayurveda study requires Sincerity, Integrity, Dedication, Devotion, Honour and Altruism (concern for the welfare of others). If you can apply passion and energy towards the above qualities in yourself, you can succeed and attain everything you require in Ayurveda. 7

He remains uniquely positioned to provide students in Australia with both authentic training and training suited to the needs of westerners. 9

HOW TO CHOOSE AN AYURVEDA SCHOOL Students of Ayurveda outside of India must seek out qualified and clinically experienced B.A.M.S Ayurvedacharyas in order to learn and understand the correct knowledge, skills and applications of Ayurveda. You will need a teacher who can convey Ayurveda in a clear and comprehensive fashion. Studying Ayurveda is unlike studying any other subject. You will require a course where you have the time to imbibe and live the subject, in order to experience it and later convey it yourself to others with integrity and confidence. When comparing courses, aim to get clear answers to these questions: Is the course provider a Recognised Training Organisation (R.T.O) in Australia? Will you receive authentic in-depth training in the theory and assessment methods of Ayurveda including Ayurveda pulse diagnosis and therapies, Material Medica and authentic Ayurvedic pathology, clinical case studies etc? Is the course content based upon Central Council of Indian Medicine (C.C.I.M) Guidelines, reflecting a true and genuine Ayurvedic Study Program? Who will teach and supervise the Ayurveda course? Do they possess the Ayurveda B.A.M.S degree recognized by the Central Council of Indian Medicine? How many decades clinical experience in Ayurveda have they? (Are you learning from new graduates in Ayurveda who are not much further along in their journey than yourself?) Would your lecturer s background stand up to scrutiny in India amongst other senior Ayurveda B.A.M.S Vaidyas? Is the study program being regularly assessed to achieve set outcomes and standards through assignments, test examinations, tutor observation, supervised clinical practice and practical applications? Has the course been carefully and thoughtfully designed to provide flexible training utilizing both online and face-to-face course delivery that can be undertaken even while working full time? Is the course recognised by an authentic Ayurveda professional industry association? What are the total course fees? Are there additional expenses? 10

AIAS strongly encourages all prospective students to look into the professional background, qualifications and clinical experience of their teachers before choosing a course. The AIAS is pleased to announce that they meet all of these requirements. Our courses and tutors/practitioners have been audited by ICAM, NZQA and ASQA (Australia). This is your assurance of training excellence. Dr Ajit, thank you for teaching us and inspiring me to live healthily. Your honesty is overwhelming. I have never met a person like you in my life and I am honoured to know you. The course was wonderful and really enjoyable - Susanna WHY CHOOSE THE AUSTRALASIAN INSTITUTE OF AYURVEDIC STUDIES (A.I.A.S)? 14 The A.I.A.S flexible course delivery allows people to study Ayurveda from all over Australia. The A.I.A.S course offers maximum hours in both theory and practical subjects and both online and face-to-face training. Dr Ajit has taken me to a depth in my Ayurvedic learning that I thought was phenomenal and inspired a lot of confidence in me being able to put what I learnt into practice. It certainly was a lot more than I experienced in my previous encounter with Ayurveda (with another Ayurveda school). - Maya. (Ayurveda Lifestyle Consultant) Australia WHAT OUR STUDENTS AND GRADUATES SAY... As a student, every class with Dr Ajit was a profound experience in which the ancient principles of Ayurveda were clearly explained and practically applied. Drawing on the depth of over three decades of clinical practice, Dr. Ajit selflessly shares with his students a comprehensive understanding of Ayurvedic science. The classes are not only educational but deeply transforming It is rare to find such a course that is as scientific as it is inspirational, where even the most complex theory becomes a key to true balance and wellbeing. If you are interested in learning authentic Ayurveda from a gifted teacher and physician, if you wish to experience profound and vibrant wellness and then to help others do the same, if you truly wish to make a difference to others and to society, then this is the right course for you. - Rebecca Bornstein (Ayurveda Lifestyle Consultant) Australia I have enjoyed the Ayurvedic massage class. It s really beautiful and so beneficial for our health. I have felt that in class, I was in a family where all are treated as family members. It was a really wonderful environment. Thanks for your effort and support. - Manju (Ayurveda Lifestyle Consultant), Australia 12

I love this course and have shared it on my Facebook page. I just wanted `to thank you for providing such a wonderful course (although I still have heaps to learn from Dr Ajit) and for the truly wonderful and inspiring teacher that Dr Ajit is. He has made me a better person, I truly believe. Most importantly, what he is teaching works! My sister has had problems with sleep her whole life and her new-born son has had XXXXXXXXX since birth. My sister tried many other avenues before asking me for help. I am so happy to share that this week, after a month following my diet and lifestyle routine, that she is sleeping more deeply than ever before and her son is now having regular bowel movements with no pain or blood. I cannot tell you how amazing it feels to be sharing this ancient science with people I love and seeing their amazement when such simple changes in their lifestyle have such dramatic effects. - Martin (Engineer and Ayurveda Lifetsyle Consultant), Australia I have previously studied Certificate IV with another Organisation. After the course, I was left feeling with little skill both practically and in theory and to even think about putting into practice what I was taught would have just been impossible and unfair to any client. I have been nothing but impressed and happy with my decision to re-do the entire Certificate IV Ayurveda course with A.I.A.S.The course content is huge and taught in a professional Ayurvedic manner... trust only in a well trained Ayurvedic Doctor who teaches with grace. - Scott (Ayurveda Lifestyle Consultant), Australia Dearest Dr Ajit, Thank you so much for your dedication and passion towards teaching the sacred and essential science of Ayurveda. I highly respect and appreciate your view and approach with Ayurveda and the relevant way that you apply it in the western and modern world. Your generosity and energy towards teaching has provided me with knowledge that I will hold onto and share with the world. - Dylan (Ayurveda Lifestyle Consultant), Australia 13

What s more, Dr Ajit s extensive clinical experience in the west places him as a leading figure in Ayurveda education both in terms of knowing what has to be taught and understanding how to translate Ayurveda for western students and clearly identify the areas of Ayurveda that will serve our community in the best possible way. 26 THE A.I.A.S DHANWANTARI AYURVEDA SCHOLARSHIPS The Dhanwantari Scholarship program is an initiative of the A.I.A.S to assist full fee paying students of Ayurveda with their tuition fees. This generous and limited Scholarship opportunity comes at no cost, however there is an application process. Scholarship kits will ONLY be forwarded to prospective students who have talked with a course Co-ordinator (Phone or ) and demonstrated sincerity, passion for Ayurveda and an intention to commit to the whole training program. Dhanwantari is the legendary, divine physician of Ayurvedic medicine who shared the wonders of Ayurveda with humanity. It is the hope of AIAS that in offering the Dhanwantari Scholarship for students in need, that passionate, hard working recipients who later graduate, will also pay forward the benefits of Ayurveda to others in need. It is for this reason that AIAS requires sincere applicants to first undergo a telephone interview with a course co-ordinator before any further details in the application process are sent. As Scholarships are limited, AIAS advises interested applicants to apply asap and return their course registration form, soon thereafter, to guarantee their placement in the program. NB: Scholarships are not available to students receiving Vet Fee Help. 24

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is the course approved for Vet Fee-Help? No, we currently do not offer Vet Fee-Help, though the Institute does assist students through the Dhanwantri Scholarship programme. However, if you already a practitioner or working in the industry, taking Vet Fee-Help may not be your best option. While a Vet Fee loan is an attractive option in the short term, it must be paid back, with interest, meaning your qualification could cost you upwards of $32, Even if you were to obtain finance to study with the Institute, with a Dhanwantri Scholarship and the Institute s generous payment plan that spreads your tuition fees over 3 years, the overall costs of the qualification could fall below $20,000.00, an expense which can be tax deductible for those in health care professions. Can we really learn Ayurveda by correspondence or online? The course delivery should not be considered as a correspondence course. It has been carefully planned and designed to provide an interactive, flexible & multi-format delivery that not only gives students choice in their study options but allows them to create a balance between study, work and family. The Institute makes use of a virtual classroom with weekly theory webinars to allow greater access to students from all over Australia and to save tremendous time and expenses in travel costs. However, there are distinct elements of practical training at our Brisbane campus, which cannot be obtained through online study alone. What is the necessary time per week to commit to study? The Institute recommends up to18 hours per week should be spent studying towards the completion of your qualification. I am a qualified Naturopath. What more can I get from completing an Advanced Diploma in Ayurveda? I already prescribe Ayurvedic herbs in my practice. Just as a practitioner of Naturopathy wouldn t ethically claim to be a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, or Osteopathy without having obtained the recognised qualification, all natural health practitioners intending to deliver Ayurveda should obtain the recognised training and skills in this discipline. It is a rewarding and fascinating study. You will learn valuable assessment and treatment procedures and strategies that will revolutionise your clinical skills and practice. When clients receive Ayurvedic advice they feel understood and personally empowered to take an active part in their own healing. Whilst it is encouraging to see many natural health practitioners now utilising Ayurvedic herbs, it does not mean that the herbs are prescribed with an authentic understanding of the energetics, vehicles of administration and formulae knowledge that comes with study of traditional Ayurveda in all its completeness. The completion of the Nationally Recognised qualification in Ayurveda will see you covering not only herbs, but all recommendations specific to Ayurveda nutritional, counselling, applied therapies, daily routines etc. which lend Ayurveda it s truly holistic approach to managing health. I am a qualified Yoga Teacher and have studied much of the philosophy common to Yoga and Ayurveda. Can I get exemptions for this? The Institute s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) procedure allows you to apply for academic credit if you have completed any courses, work experience or clinical practice that you believe meets the learning outcomes of a particular unit of study in your chosen course of study. To complete an RPL application you required to gather specific evidence that may demonstrate your experience, skills and knowledge in the particular unit for which you are seeking exemption. This may be submitted in various forms e.g. video, practical demonstration, interview, written details from an employer/supervisor or qualified witness. I have been considering studying the BAMS degree in India. Would you recommend? In India, students wishing to study Ayurveda complete a Bachelor in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.), a six-year degree course that involves study in traditional and contemporary medical subjects ranging from Herbal Medicine to Ayurvedic Surgery and Gerontology. 25

It would be a wonderful opportunity if you have both the time and money to complete this qualification as it would give you the most through grounding in the principles and application of Ayurveda. However, you will require advanced high school science and mathematics (essentially the same matriculation results that you would need to enter a medical degree). You will also require some competency in Hindi or whatever dialect that the course is delivered in, as only one university offers the Bachelor in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery in English. For these reasons, the Institute recommends the Advanced Diploma in Ayurveda, believing it to be the most comprehensive qualification in Ayurveda outside India. What is a Common Unit? The common units are a group of practical skills that are essential for any complementary health practitioner so you will find them in a number of qualifications, whether studying to be a naturopath or ayurvedic practitioner. They cover such issues as managing a practice, workplace health and safety and infection control. If you have a qualification in a complementary health modality you may have already completed some of these common units, in which case you could be eligible for academic credit as part of your study with the Institute. What if miss a lecture due to technical or other difficulties, will I be able to view it at a later date? Yes, each webinar is recorded and uploaded to the Institute s E-learning portal, where it is available to view for 7 days. However, there is a requirement for students to maintain an 80% attendance rate at these webinars. What if I can t attend one of the practical training workshops. Can I attend the following year? No. Because of the way the programmes are taught, you must attend the Practical Training workshop/s when they appear in your timetable. Otherwise, you will miss important information and will struggle to understand later coursework that builds on this foundation knowledge. For this reason, it is a requirement of enrolment that you must attend the Practical Training workshop/s as shown in the timetable. What if I get pregnant and can t complete my Advanced Diploma in the 3 years provided? Am I able to defer or extend my study further? No. Because of the way the programmes are taught, you are unable to defer your study. In such cases, you would need to withdraw from your course of study and seek re-enrolment in a later programme. In such cases, you would be eligible for a Transfer of Credit for any competencies completed prior to your withdrawal. In the event you need extra time to complete your studies, you may apply for a 6-month extension. However, there is an administration fee associated with lodging such an application. For these reasons, the Institute recommends students plan carefully before committing to study to ensure they can complete their qualification in the required timeframe. Will I be provided with course notes and or text books? Yes, you will be supplied with extensive course notes for all the lectures, which are available to download from the Institute s E-learning portal. Because these notes are so comprehensive, you will not require further text-books to complete your study. However, the Institute provides a reading list of reputable authors for students who wish to read further on the subject. Do I have to attend all of the weekend practicals to gain the necessary experience or can I gain the information from the online lectures. The weekends are a compulsory and vital component of the course where you are able to discuss different aspects of the subject with Dr Ajit and also other students. During these weekends there will often be a practical component where you will learn certain skills and knowledge. You will also meet classmates and establish connections with others who have similar interests. You will possibly form lifelong friendships. There is practical group work set on weekends which cannot be achieved through online study. It is also a requirement that students maintain an 80% attendance rate to maintain their enrolment. 26
