Facial Cupping Is a superficial technique to actively stimulate and encourage the natural drainage flow of the lymph, improve circulation, release fascia stuck to the skin and muscles, draw out lactic acid and metabolic impurities from muscles, soften repetitive motion wrinkles, sedate nervous system and remove edema. This manual technique uses a specific pressure and rhythm to arrive at your desired effect. This technique is easy on your body, unbelievable effective and super fun to do. It can be used as a standalone treatment or as an add-on service and WILL improve the results of any service or technique that follows. Traditional cupping has been around for over 5,000 years and has been performed all over the world. Ge Hong ( AD) is responsible for the earliest written use of cupping. It has been used in many parts of the world a folk medicine passed down thru generations but the popularity of of cupping has increased once again recently due to celebrities and Olympians displaying their cupping marks on TV and in media. Traditionally, cupping was used to restore energy (Qi) blockages, later treatments involved the meridian system. Modern cupping ideology is based on Western medicine to alleviate pain, trigger points, adhesions, move lymph, reduce joint pain, increasing collagen synthesis. 5 Facial Cupping Benefits Healing After Surgery Cupping can help with healing after surgery (8 weeks) to assist in the regeneration of cellular tissues to reduce and align scarring, reduction of swelling and detoxification the body. *Make sure client is medically cleared before giving a treatment Improved Immune System The immune system is tied to the lymphatic system. In fact, if flow of lymphatic materials slows, the immune system weakens. Cupping can improve the function and increase the production of antibodies that fight off infections as well as reduce systemic inflammation. Relaxation Facial Cupping is especially relaxing because the slow, methodical rhythm and pressure and repetitive motion allows for the brain to relax and elicit the parasympathetic nervous system to slow heart rate, increase glandular activity, reduce pain and promote general vitality and well-being. Decongestive Effect Any swelling of the body, except for cardiac or renal edema, as well as congested pores can be treated with cupping. The lymphatic system is a one-way street to transport cellular waste from tissue and dispose back into the circulatory system. We will be focusing on the face, neck and décolleté that drain into the axillary nodes Other benefits: Increased nutrients and oxygenation for healthier skin Minimized lines and wrinkles Brings nutrient and oxygen enriched blood cells to the skin Reduced puffiness under eyes, chin and jowls Diminish and align scar tissue Clears blocked energy channels Relief from sinus pressure and congestion Stimulation fibroblast cell production resulting in improved elasticity Detoxified skin from the drawing of impurities to the surface for removal Relaxation of facial muscles for a younger, less stressed look Soften and mobilize congestion and sebum Decreased facial paralysis from certain conditions Increased absorption of skin care products The Zen Institute: Facial Cupping - by Cheryl Miller Page 5
Health Intake Info Indications: Primary or secondary lymphedema. Lipedema. Phlebo-lymphostatic edema. Postoperative edema. Posttraumatic edema. Chronic venous insufficiency. Palliative care: Provision of comfort and pain relief when other physical therapies are no longer appropriate. Muscle spasm Rheumatic disorders Inflammation Sinus congestion or sluggish bowels Fatigue or insomnia Congested complexion, decreased circulation Chronic tension and headaches Stress and slow metabolism Pallor Flaccid skin Malnourished or dehydrated skin The Zen Institute: Facial Cupping - by Cheryl Miller Page 6
Contraindications: Despite the great variety of applications for cupping, there are a number of hard/soft contraindications: ** Do NOT perform Cupping** Cupping over a superficial Artery Any metastatic or systemic malignant condition Congestive Heart or Renal failure Deep Vein Thrombosis or history of blood clots Cancer or Chemo clients Acute infections Undiagnosed lumps Open sores or lesions Under the influence of drugs alcohol Active Lupus Rosacea Severe edema **Proceed with Caution** Edema following carcinoma treatment Thyroid Dysfunction Chronic inflammation Bronchial asthma Hypotension (low BP) Diabetes Known allergies Reactive eczema Blood thinners Poisonous bites Sunburn Fever or dehydration Fragile onion skin The Zen Institute: Facial Cupping - by Cheryl Miller Page 7
Q & A What is Facial Cupping? Facial cupping is the application of a silicone cup to suction or vacuum to the skin for therapeutic and aesthetic purposes. It is an excellent form of non-invasive treatment that can work to minimize the effects of sun and environmental damage and aging. It is completely safe to use since it does not involve surgery, no recovery time, chemicals, or any other potentially harmful and painful procedures. What is the purpose of Facial Cupping? The purpose of facial cupping is to draw impurities out of your tissues and drain them into lymph nodes where bacteria, viruses and other harmful microorganisms are destroyed. To separate adhered fascia to for the release of repetitive muscle contracture (wrinkles), plump firm and tone the skin, stimulate collagen, align scar tissue, mobilize congested pores, and improve vascularity and tone. It reduces swelling and pain and stimulates your immune system by increasing the circulation of white blood cells. Are there different kinds of cupping methods? Yes!! There are several but the techniques we will be using are static and dynamic. The static method stays in one place to plump, firm and tone. It is also the technique done over superficial arteries. The dynamic technique is done to stimulate collagen, move lymph and separate fascia. What types of cups are there? There are several different types. Some are glass that use fire to remove oxygen, some use a machine to draw out oxygen but we will be using a large and small silicone cup that can be squeezed to create a suction. The results are the same for all cupping methods. I m worried about bruising my client I know it looks like a bruise when there is discoloration on people who have static cupping done to their body but it s not. Let me explain. A bruise is caused by blunt force trauma to a vein causing blood to seep into the tissue area. As a result the area will become purple and be tender to the touch. This is not the case with cupping. What can happen when you create too much suction is that old impurities that have been trapped in tissue is released. Normally your lymphatic system would carry it away but since we cause a negative pressure the impurities are drawn to the surface, just under the skin. While they look like a bruise they don t feel like a bruise. Our goal with facial cupping is to stay below that level so we DO NOT cause a cupping kiss. **I highly recommend that you practice on your own arm or face to become very familiar with the slight amount of pressure needed to do so. The Zen Institute: Facial Cupping - by Cheryl Miller Page 8
Q & A (cont.) How does cupping work? When you squeeze the cup to draw the tissue in, several things happen. The tissue (fascia) under the skin warms and begins separating, energy blockages, congested pores, stagnant lymph is mobilized, trigger points released, rehydration occurs, and oxygen and blood flow improve to bring balance tone. How do I do Cupping? We will be doing both the dynamic and static variations of cuppings. The have different indications but both follow the same protocol to gently squeeze the silicone cup, apply to well lubricated skin, and either glide or stay stationary and either pinch or pop to release. We will be using the larger cup for the décolleté and the smaller cup for the entire face. The intent is to move lymph, metabolic waste, lactic acid, waste away from the face and neck and down toward the axillary lymph nodes and heart to optimize flow. It will aid in reducing congestion and swelling anywhere cupping isapplied. What is the flow for Cupping? We will be following the same downward flushing technique that we learned in Manual Lymphatic Drainage. **Disclosure: Do not diagnose, prevent, treat or cure any illness, metabolic disorder, disease or health problem. When in doubt, consult a physician. Cupping should not be used to diagnose or cure health disorders. We do not heal our clients; the body repairs itself.we just assist in speeding up the process. Please contact the instructor, Cheryl Miller, if you have any If not, we are ready to begin.. The Zen Institute: Facial Cupping - by Cheryl Miller Page 9
Cupping Protocol Usually minutes and can be an add-on or as a stand-alone treatment. Skin should be cleaned thoroughly, Apply a facial oil so cups can glide smoothly. Facial cupping uses a much gentler suction than cupping on the body, and as such is painless and should never leave marks on the skin. When performing cupping, work each site or gliding pathway three times before moving to the next. Work one side of the face first, repeating on the other side. Slower movements increase lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness Faster movements increase circulation & stimulate collagen, improving elasticity. Skin integrity can vary based on client age and health, so be careful that you are not using suction strong enough to break capillaries, bruise the skin or leave marks. Cupping Protocol Step-By-Step: Lines and arrows represent direction of flow X s represent area of static cupping. Do not glide over these areas Apply lubricant prior to beginning cupping Begin under the chin to clear lymph pathways Technique should be done 3-5 times in each area. You should visibly see an ischemic and erythemic 1. After cleansing the skin apply a generous amount lubricant to entire face and décolleté 2. To Begin: Gentle squeeze and attach the larger cup to the sternum. Use a gliding stroke to draw impurities toward the axilla. Repeat each stroke 3 times as you ascend to just below the clavicle 3. Switch to the small cup The Zen Institute: Facial Cupping - by Cheryl Miller Page 10
4. Gently squeeze the small cup superior and medial to the clavicle. When you have a good suction start to glide the cup medial to lateral as you ascend up the neck to the jaw bone. Repeat 3 times. 5. Flush the system: Using the static popping technique start on the later side of the neck just below jaw bone. You will moving the cup from superior to inferior using only the popping technique. This will open all lymph passages and circulation pathways 6. Place cup center chin above the jaw bone and glide cup laterally toward the ear as you as up the entire face. Complete the glide stroke 3 times and then flush the metabolic waste down the neck using the popping technique 7. Use the popping technique for the orbicularis oculi and oris still moving medial to later and finishing with the flush down the neck. 8. To finish: Starting directly above the nose, glide the the cup from the brow bone to the hair like moving medial to lateral. Finish with a flush own the later edge of the face and final flush down the neck. What to expect after your Facial Cupping treatment You just stimulated the body's most powerful system of detoxification, it is very importand to stay hydrated to keep the lymphatic system flowing. What You may feel after: Feeling your body as "light and fluffy Brain Fog or light headed Increased odorous urination Increased odorous bowel movements Deeper and more restful sleep Hunger or cravings for fats Thirst Tiredness, wanting to rest or nap Sinus Drainage Ear Drainage Reductions in swelling Decrease in headaches Plump, firm and hydrated skin Improved vascularity Improved elasticity and tone Warmth on the surface The Zen Institute: Facial Cupping - by Cheryl Miller Page 11
