11 About the Author E ugenie Rowson (known as Genie) was born in Zimbabwe, grew up in the sticks on isolated farms in Zimbabwe and Zambia and was educated at the prestigious public boarding school, St Leonards Mayfield in England. For many years, Eugenie pursued a career, firstly in medical technology in Zimbabwe, and later as a human resources practitioner in South Africa. Along with motherhood came her growing disillusionment with modern wonder-drugs such as antibiotics, antiinflammatories and antihistamines, and after the most unexpected recovery of her eldest son from a severe bout of tonsillitis, her commitment and enthusiasm for homeopathic medicine flourished. She discovered a safer and more effective way to treat the everyday ailments of their five young children and improve their health. Due to her hotelier husband s career, they lived in several wild and remote locations in southern Africa, and this reinforced her determination to be self-reliant and confident in managing the health of her family. When Eugenie s husband was relocated to the UK, she seized the opportunity to formalise her knowledge and expertise in homeopathy. Living in a strange world brought many trials and difficulties for the whole family, but Eugenie managed to juggle her husband s long hours and the many physical, emotional and psychological needs of their family, while she studied and qualified as a homeopath and hypnotherapist. Eugenie holds the Diploma in Homoeopathic Medicine, DIHOM (UK) and the Diploma of the Institute of Homoeopathy Practitioner Level, DIHOM (Pract) (UK). She is a Fellow of the British Institute of Homoeopathy, 10

You are the first to know when something is different, uncomfortable, irritating, painful, unsightly or just plain sore. Then who better to decide on the most suitable homeopathic remedy than you? In circumstances where we can t or won t help ourselves, I am convinced that mothers make the best physicians to their loved ones. They re tuned in to every tiny sniffle, mood change or bowel movement, so who better to recognise any deviation from the norm but mom? What s more, any effort to help the healing process that is motivated by love and care is all the more powerful! As long as you can describe the symptoms in ordinary words, a good homeopathic remedy can be chosen and administered to 12

I am the lucky mother of five lovely children who arrived in this world one at a time (no twins and to answer your second likely question no other marriages!) Each was hoped for, wanted, and most of all, welcomed! Money, of course, was far less abundant than children and this made things tough at times such choices are not for the faint-hearted! My husband is a hotelier and for many years I held various human resources positions with him at different resorts, hotels and lodges in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Northern Ireland and southern Ireland. In our 18 years of marriage, we have lived in 16 different locations, including resorts, towns, cities and bush destinations. Each place has brought new challenges and fears; and each has required a whole new set of coping skills for us as parents, and for our children who had to settle in to new schools, make new friends, etc. (James, our eldest son, is now at his 10th school.) With so many moves, I became an expert at the most unexpected things, for instance, I am very efficient at buying school uniforms, packing and unpacking boxes, and not hassling about where the pictures hang! Had I been able to anticipate any of this as I stood at the altar; had I known what life was to bring, I would never have believed I had the nerve for it all. But there you go; God knows more about our capacity and capabilities than we do! My greatest worry as a mother was that I did not feel sufficiently capable when my children were sick; things seemed beyond my control and the conventional system of medicine (in circumstances other than emergencies where crisis intervention was needed) didn t make any sense to me. Our first baby, James, was born in Pretoria in April 1991, and like all enthusiastic mothers, I had read the baby manual and believed I was ready for anything. But Hah! The manual didn t say that labour would be agonising, I would get no sleep for months on end, and feel as though my mind had gone on permanent vacation; 13

15 Introduction How I stumbled upon homeopathic medicine in desperation nor did it mention that babies get sick all the time. I remember James s first visit to the GP. Tonsillitis was diagnosed and I came home enthusiastically clutching a bag full of goodies from the pharmacist antibiotic, antihistamine, cortisone nasal spray and the usual paracetamol syrup. James spat out all of these foultasting medicines and we quickly had to adopt the dreaded hold-him-down, and pour-in-the-muti (with a clever syringe) while-he-opens-his-mouth-to-scream approach! We even learnt to hold his tiny panicky little arms to make sure he couldn t fight us off. Very traumatic for new parents, but hey, as long as it was good for him we knew we were doing the best for him. Whenever I would get all choked up, with serious doubts that I was being a good mother, my husband Simon, having been a medic in the army, consoled me by saying we had to be cruel to be kind. Besides, what else could we do as responsible parents? I just did not understand why we had the strange idea that something viletasting, painful or frightening must be good for us. Surely we should give God more credit for our design after all, the gagging mechanism is there for a reason. Why do we totally accept that the body knows what to do when we are well, but the minute we are sick, we think it doesn t know what it s doing and we should therefore consciously force it to do the opposite of the symptoms that are apparent. If I bash my knee, surely the cause of the injury was the impact and the inflammation of the knee afterwards is the body s method of curing the injury? Why then would an anti-inflammatory be a good idea? Nevertheless, this same medicines drama repeated itself on almost a sixweekly basis. It was either a visit to the GP or, if sheer desperation and finances allowed, the paediatrician but the outcome was always the same... antibiotic, antihistamine, antiinflammatory, over and over again. The top three shelves of the fridge door were dedicated to James s medicines and on each return from the doctor I would throw out the oldest (whether they had expired or not) and secure the new lot. The only variation in medicines in the fridge for tonsillitis and upperrespiratory infections/inflammation were those for thrush! The anti sentiments were starting to build up in my mind and the little brass bells of doubt and uncertainty had started to tinkle. 14

16 Introduction How I stumbled upon homeopathic medicine in desperation When James was 10 months old we went on holiday to Plettenberg Bay. While in the hotel room on the eighth floor, James got yet another fever, but this time his eyes suddenly rolled back and he stopped breathing and went blue. Simon and I both went into instant panic mode and Simon tried to give him mouth-to-mouth CPR, which didn t bring any change. Simon clutched James as we rushed down to the hotel foyer, panic-stricken and utterly desperate. James was so blue that we thought he must have been dead. Suddenly, thank God, he started to breathe again, and the hotel staff flew into action and called an ambulance. After a thorough examination we learnt a new big name febrile convulsion and left the hospital with yet another antibiotic and anti-inflammatory! so that he was less likely to develop a bacterial infection, and thereby prevent a fever and subsequent convulsion and the need for such a drastic drug. But there was no time to debate my theory with the busy specialist. The list of nasty side-effects was terrifying, but I gave in (what did I know I was only a mother!) and so James battled with us over his Epilim dose for the next two years. It was easy to force him at first, but he soon learnt to roll and twist so that the first spoonful went into this ear and the second into that ear hopefully After our return home to Thaba Nchu, and a few more convulsions with further illnesses, the paediatrician put James onto Epilim (an anti-epileptic drug) to prevent the convulsions. I contemplated that since the convulsions were only triggered by high fever, we should rather be boosting his immune system Why do we totally accept that the body knows what to do when we are well, but the minute we are sick, we think it doesn t know what it s doing? 15

17 Introduction How I stumbled upon homeopathic medicine in desperation third time lucky! As he got a little older, he would fly into a high-speed shuffle on his bottom when he saw the Epilim coming. (I dare say that this might have had some sort of positive influence since James is now a talented rugby player and can run like the wind! He s also good at thinking on his feet.) The tonsillitis, fevers, antibiotics and Epilim continued for many more months. In May 1992, Christie was born in Bloemfontein and I was certain the second time around would be much easier. Another Hah! Little Christie developed her own set of illnesses. At 5 weeks, when she failed to flourish and got thinner and thinner, Christie spent a week in hospital on treatment for septicaemia (possibly contracted at birth, we were told). After a good dose of cortisone and antibiotics she was home after a week. Thank God. After that it just seemed to be throat and ear infections every two months or so for Christie but on the whole I counted my blessings because she seemed to get sick less often than James. A few weeks later, James was hospitalised with symptoms of severe joint inflammation (possibly caused by a spider bite they weren t sure), but after a good dose of cortisone and anti-inflammatories, he was home in a week. In the months to come, James suffered many more bouts of tonsillitis and after moving to Rustenburg, he was diagnosed with asthma! And so, we did the asthma pump and more antihistamine thing. This meant covering his little mouth and nose with a mask with the inhaler pump attached! What child would like this? Fortunately, James couldn t stand breathing from the gas mask. We got tired of this additional battle and somehow he managed to live without it! Oh goodness, I ve almost forgotten to tell you about all the illnesses brought on by their vaccinations! Both James and Christie would take a down-turn in health after each vaccination (and there seemed to be many of those!), and I was always petrified that James would get a fever afterwards so I would give him as much paracetamol as was permitted (imagine what this did to his liver!) But I kept agreeing to the vaccinations after all, I didn t want them to get really sick! I thought that I was being a good mother, but in retrospect, I shudder at my actions and deeply regret that I didn t question 16

I ve also not mentioned all the skin and blood tests they were subjected to for allergies. Both James and Christie started to over-react to gluten and James was sensitive to cow s milk right from the start, so he grew up on soya milk. On one occasion, I did voice my confusion and dared to ask our GP in Rustenburg why it was necessary to keep giving the children an antibiotic for the same problem, over and over again. Why did the bacteria keep thriving? Surely there was a weakness in their immunity? Should we not focus on boosting their immune systems so these that bacteria could not thrive? Never was a multi-vitamin or any other immune-boosting supplement or preventative action mentioned or recommended. (I did give them Vidalyn syrup but only because I remember my mother giving it to us as children, probably because it tasted so nice!) Weren t we trying to cure them? Surely there was a better way? The GP got irritated with my questions and promptly instructed his receptionist to book James and Christie in for a full set of blood tests (at vast expense I might add). The blood tests were incredibly traumatic for little James and Christie. They couldn t easily find a vein on Christie s plump little body and after trying her arm and leg, the nurse put the needle into her neck while I had to hold her down! The blood tests came We should focus on boosting our immune systems so bacteria cannot thrive 17

19 Introduction How I stumbled upon homeopathic medicine in desperation up with nothing. It all felt so barbaric and I vowed then and there, never again. Thank God this cycle of events changed forever with one providential holiday to Zimbabwe (of all places). With another bout of severe tonsillitis, we could only get James an appointment with a doctor in four days time, so we stopped in at a chemist for help to tide him over until then. I didn t know quite what I was hoping for but I was desperate. A very friendly lady behind the counter couldn t give me an antibiotic but suggested cheerfully, why don t you try this it s homeopathic. The remedy she recommended cost very little and quite honestly, we had nothing to lose. James chewed on the little white sugary tablets hourly and he seemed to love the taste! On the evening of the second day he promptly announced, My sore throat has gone, Mom! I peered curiously down his throat and yes... there it was a big empty space where the inflamed tonsils had been! The bottle of homeopathic stuff had worked. I thought he should carry on chewing the little tablets for a while longer and we checked again the next evening yes, it was true no more tonsillitis. The visit to the doctor the following morning confirmed this. My first reaction was utter disbelief. How could something off the shelf, something non-prescriptive, something non-anti have worked? My next reaction was anger. If this was possible, then why all the antibiotics, why all the hours spent sitting in doctors rooms? I was angry for having had to force James and Christie to swallow disgustingtasting medicine that often made them gag and want to vomit. I was angry about all the side-effects like thrush, poor appetite, irritability and a disturbed sleeping pattern. 18 But when I got over my anger, I became fascinated! I studied the packaging of the homeopathic remedy that James had taken. I could tell that all the ingredients were in Latin (with plantey/herbal-sounding names) but that s all. How did it work? What was it made from? Where could I learn more about it? Where could I buy it from? What other homeopathic medicines

At every opportunity I scanned bookshops and scratched around in second-hand bookstalls to find literature on homeopathic medicine and so our journey of self-help homeopathy began. At first, I was overwhelmed to learn that homeopathy was an entire system of medicine that most people had never even heard of. I couldn t believe that it wasn t well known, used and available everywhere. I felt alone in my interest in homeopathy, but I persevered. While living in Johannesburg, I built up a good supply of homeopathic polychrest remedies (each of which has many uses). The more I learnt and the more confident I became, the more I relished in the positive results I saw in my children... and the fridge door soon emptied of conventional medicines. I also started to study nutrition and supplements, and thoroughly enjoyed making my own natural home remedies, most of which were successful. Not all of them tasted good, however, and that s a big consideration for treating children. I remember making Christie an exciting and most-promising concoction of onion, honey and lemon juice for her cold. Granted, it doesn t sound delicious, but it may well have cured her cold had she not vomited it up! Simon and I developed a burning desire for a more natural way of life and we moved to the country where, together with his parents, we ran a wholesome guesthouse. Our next son, Blaise, was born in Volksrust, Mpumalanga (South Africa) in February A beautiful baby, quite obviously made of healthy country air, clean water and home-grown foods. Blaise developed a magnificent crop of golden yellow curls which we were convinced was created from and even looked like the healthy scrambled (farm) eggs which I ate in abundance while I was pregnant with him! I also enjoyed a glass of Allesverloren Port each evening and believe this may have contributed to his lovely mellow temperament! I gave him homeopathic medicines wherever possible and he thrived. I still hadn t developed enough knowledge to reject (in my mind) the need for vaccinations and so his immune system also got the treatment. Before we moved up to Zimbabwe I took Blaise for a massive dose of vaccinations, thinking that I was giving him a big boost before we went off to live in an unknown, and 19
