I I rth West London Collaboration of Clinical Commissioning Groups Our plans to prescribe fewer medicines that can be bought without a prescription What do you think? 1
Prescriptions Prescribe is where your doctor is saying you should have a certain medicine. A prescription is the note your doctor writes to the pharmacist. The NHS pays for medicines that are prescribed. Some people pay towards the cost of their prescription. Some people don t have to pay. You can only get most medicines if you have a prescription. But there are some medicines that you can buy yourself from a pharmacist. 2
Our plans We want doctors in rth West London to prescribe fewer medicines that people could buy themselves. We want doctors to: Ask you if they would be able to buy the medicine themselves Give you a leaflet about buying medicines yourself But doctors should carry on prescribing medicines for these people even if the medicine could be bought from the pharmacist: School age children who need to take the medication when they are at school People who live in care homes Homeless people People with learning disabilities 3
octors shouldn t usually prescribe these things: Things to stop you sweating Things to put in your bath Medicines for indigestion Medicines for coughs and colds Creams for piles Herbal remedies Salts to use if you have had diarrhoea Things to help get rid of hair Treatments for warts and verrucas Gels for babies new teeth rinks or tonics that pick-meup Travel sickness tablets 4
Our plan We want doctors to: Ask patients if they will buy the medicines. The patients can say yes or no If they say no the doctor will give them a prescription. Help any patient to get a medicine that they need We don t want doctors to: Stop prescribing any medicine Ask any patient about how much money they have 5
