1 Milton Keynes Draft Dementia Strategy - A Consultation What is a strategy? A strategy helps organisations such as health and social care form a joint vision to achieve longterm improvements for a service area. Milton Keynes Draft Dementia Strategy outlines the proposed priorities for improvements across the Dementia Pathway in line with the National Dementia Strategy over the next three years. It has been developed together with organisations that support people with dementia, including statutory and non-statutory services, social care and health services and civil society organisations and carers. From 31 January to 28 March 2014, Milton Keynes Council is running an eight week consultation on the draft dementia strategy to help us to develop the strategy by gathering your thoughts and ideas. Who is the strategy intended for? Although predominantly a disorder of later life, a small percentage of people under the age of 65 also have dementia. This strategy is aimed at people with dementia, their families and carers in order to ensure that suitable and sufficient services are available. In addition it is a shared vision for all communities that support people with dementia and their carer and for members of the wider health and social care economy. Why have we developed a strategy? The importance of dementia as a long term condition has been recognised by both Milton Keynes Council and Clinical Commissioning Group. As a response to this the Health and Wellbeing Board Strategy has targeted access to high quality dementia care. Local providers from Health and Social Care have made considerable improvements in dementia care locally to meet a number of the National Dementia Strategy objectives. This includes the development of a local Memory Assessment Service, delivery of peer and carers community support services and the development of a range of specialist housing for people with dementia. Milton Keynes is expecting to have a significant rise in the number of older people over coming years. It is estimated that the total number of people in Milton Keynes with dementia, including early onset dementia, will increase to 2,400 by 2015 and will continue to 3,250 by 2021 i. A recent Secretary of State for Health announcement sets a national ambition to improve dementia diagnosis rates, to see two-thirds of people with dementia identified and given appropriate support by As people with dementia are significant users of health and social care services, action to close the gap to ensure people receive early diagnosis and timely services is imperative.

2 What are we proposing? The recently formed Dementia Strategy Group has developed a set of priorities that they will take forward to implementation. Seven priorities have been identified to focus on throughout include: 1. Good health promotion 2. Increasing early and timely diagnosis 3. Increasing support to carers and relatives of people with dementia 4. Improving community support services for people with dementia, to sustain independence and improves quality of life 5. Improving the experience of hospital services for people with dementia and their carers 6. Improving the quality of care in residential care homes and domiciliary care for people with dementia 7. A workforce fit to deliver services to support the care pathway for dementia The consultation We encourage and welcome comments and feedback, which will be carefully considered. We have planned a series of events where officers from the council will be available to talk about the proposals in more detail, answer any questions, and hear your views.
